Title: Matt Abts of Gov't Mule
Post by: equipmentdork on September 14, 2004, 04:25 PM
Yesterday, I saw Gov't Mule for the first time, and I loved Matt Abts's playing.  The emphasis is less on finesse than testosterone-fueled THUMP, and it was a great show.
Matt had a late model Slingerland kit set up in a Buddy Rich/Bonham style (one rack and two floors)
I've seen this done in the studio, but what he had were TWO 22" or 24" kicks, one in front of the other, front head intact, but the mic in between the two.  I guess this is the DW woofer concept gone awry.  Hey, it did get that nerve-jangling thump, so there's something to it!
My question is...has anyone else ever seen this done live?
(btw...Someone shouted out "Nice Kit, Matt!" and Warren Haynes joked to the audience, "Don't encourage him, or else there'll be three bass drums up here!")
