Title: Your Upcoming Gigs
Post by: Bart Elliott on September 19, 2004, 05:09 AM
If you are gigging outside your region, here's where you can post some of your upcoming gigs for this Fall. Please don't list EVERY gig ... just highlight a few ... and if you need to add more, please MODIFY your initial post rather than posting again, and again, and again. I don't want this to get out of hand, but would like to give members and opportunity to meet and hang.

A different kind of gig.

I will be in Middletown, Va with the 3rd Maine Infantry Fife and Drum Corps at the 140 anniversary re-enactment of the battle of Cedar Creek, the weekend of Oct 15-17.  Anyone in the area who is into this sort of thing, look me up.  I will be the drum Major of the 2nd Regiment, USV.
That's on the Yankee side.  :)

I'm playing an Enter the Worship Circle gig on Saturday night at the Ute Cultural Center in Woodland Park, CO.  It will be a fundraiser for some deserving local charities.  I'm loosely familiar with most of the tunes but haven't played them before.  Additionally, the leader likes to "take away the drummer's feet" so I'll be playing some hybrid setup.  Should be lots of fun.

We've got a "reunion" gig in Austin, TX (our hometown) on February 17th at a place called Trophy's (it's a dive bar on South Congress, but it's where some of the first gigs were played and it's one of our friends/family's favorite places.

It will be the first gig for the band with me as their drummer - we'll be playing a lot in Austin through March/April, then doing a stint in the Northeast in the late spring.

For any NY area DC'ers. The band Doctor Son has asked me to sit in for their absent drummer on Saturday night, 3/26 for a headlining 11:30 show at the C Note in NYC. So it looks like I'll once again be bringing my hackneyed style and mediocre skills to a live venue. They are a really  good band though, good songwriters too, they've been making a name for themselves in the tri state area, which makes me wonder why they asked me to play with 'em???

I normally just post my gigs in Bart's Blog (http://community.drummercafe.com/index.php?board=19), but I wanted to share this here as well ... since it's a last minute development.

I'll be a guest artist/clinician at the 2005 Dallas Guitar Show / Music Fest (http://www.guitarshow.com), April 9th and 10th. This is the largest public event of it's kind ... second only to NAMM, which is not open to the public. This year the Guitar Show has expanded to include drums/percussion ... and they are calling it Drum World (http://www.guitarshow.com/drumworld.html).

There are plans to have a Drummer Cafe booth ... and $5.00 Off the admission price for all Drummer Cafe VIP Members; more details coming soon. Lot's of big name guitarists will be at this event, many with their own bands! Visit www.GuitarShow.com (http://www.GuitarShow.com) for more details!

March 29th  I'll be appearing at the Exit/In (Nashville, TN), playing drums for Angie Broberg (http://community.drummercafe.com/index.php?board=19;action=display;threadid=13086)

March 30th I'll be appearing at 3rd & Lindsley (Nashville, TN), playing drums for Rachel Williams (http://community.drummercafe.com/index.php?board=19;action=display;threadid=12256).

OK, I'm pretty sure nobody on this board is close enough to come to Athens, Ga for this show but, I'm pretty psyched about it so, I'm going to post it, anyway.

Slippery People, the Talking Heads cover band, is playing at the Georgia Theater in Athens on Friday, April 22nd.  http://www.georgiatheatre.com/

This is our first real concert venue (as in not just another bar) kind of show and we're headlining this show!

(the sad news is that there is some possibility that this might also be our last show together - a couple of our players are leaving town earlier than we expected.)

Anyway, if you want to be on the guest list, send me a message.  (Sorry, I do not have a place for you to crash.)

==================
after the show update:
Wow!  This place gave us the "star treatment" - never had that before.  Dressing room with stocked 'fridge, towels, plasma TV, private bathrooms, etc.  The sound was incredible!  For the first time ever, I had my own monitor - the monitor console (on stage with a separate sound guy) was twice as big as the biggest house console we'd every played with!

When we came down the stairs to take the stage for our show, we we're shocked!  The place was packed and the crowd started going crazy - never in my life have I gotten such a reception BEFORE we played a note!

Truly one of the best times I have ever had playing and I didn't even play that well.

Any of you guys who are touring - come to Athens and play the Georgia Theatre - you will love it!

My band is playing a local Bowling alley this Friday around 8:30.  Lots of relatives/ people i know will be there.
I'm a little nervous, but not really about my playing.  We've been doing the same songs for about 5 months now, and our lead singer still is forgetting lyrics!
All should go well.  If the lead singer does make mistakes, the rest of the band will go on with the song, so its not like the embarrasment would be on MY playing.
This is also a good opportunity for me to get myself out there as a musician for other bands looking for "new Talent".  It's also nice to be playing with people twice my age and playing FOR people in that same group.  It lets me prove myself, and that i can keep my own among more experienced players.

Anyways, that's our earliest up-coming gig, and the first one in this particular city.  And Prom is the next night!  Plus i play with the school jazz band tomorrow and wednesday.  I'm having a good outlook on this week! :)

Sounds like a busy week coming up for you, wish you the best for the gigs, don't let the singer messing up throw you. Just keep your ears and eyes open and the band can hold it together.

Just got word today that we have been selected to kick off the TOPS Great American Rib Cook Off and Music Festival at Tower City Ampitheater in Cleveland on Friday May 27th.  Sponsored by Tops Grocery Stores and WGAR 99.5 FM this will be our second year at this event.  Anyone in the area is welcome to come on by.  We have 4 gigs this weekend and it should prove interesting.    With over 110 jobs booked for 2005 to date I plan on NO rest !!

I just got the word yesterday that we (Mickey Gilley and the Urban Cowboy Band) will be out of our Branson, MO theater to do a one-night show in Dallas, TX on July 13 at the Gilley's Club on Lamar Street.   Mark your calendars.

Here is a link to the driving directions:  http://www.gilleysdallas.com/Info/Directions-Parking/Index

BTW,  the club has one of the best house bands in the southwest, called "Backstage".  You really need to check this band out if you are in the area - they're awesome.

I'd be interested in meeting anyone from the DC when we're there.

We got the hook-up with the local rag magazine in town and House of Blues here and did the "second stage"  (a seperate stage for local talent) opening for Rascal Flatts last week at blossom Music Center.  Not a bad gig as 23,000 people got to see us for 1 hour prior to the main show.

Worked out so well, we got the same deal for the  Toby Keith show July 8th.
The gig also comes with great local advertising, radio spots, comp. food, beverages and VIP passes for the shows.

I will be playing bass for a very talented singer/writer/guitarist named Dan Acosta. August 14 at Mr Beerys,4019 Hempstead Turnpike, Bethpage N.Y.
This will be my first show with him as a bass player. My first real show playing bass.
The killer part is also playing is Randy Jackson from Zebra. I was telling LouderB I was hoping to catch Randy while he is up here, now I`m playing instead of standing in the crowd.
I am planning on doing some dates with him on the Rock4Christmas tour this year.
Its gonna be wierd not sitting behind a drumset.

I love Zebra!!!  Very cool.

PS: I'm doing a fill-in gig tonight and tomorrow (7/22, 7/23) for my old band Phat Lipp (at the Crown in Clermont, FL if anyone is interested).  They have a new bass player too so it should be interesting.

Here's something a little different:

I play snare in a bagpipe band (www.mcpb.org) and we're going to Scotland to compete in the world pipeband championships (Aug. 13) in Glasgow, as well as two other competitions (Aug 6,7) and a one hour concert in Glasgow (Aug. 11).

We leave on August 2nd.  This is the band's 3rd trip, my 2nd.  It's too bad we can't take the drum set and guitars for the concert.  We do a lot of fun things when we have the opportunity!

I get to mop up the "Wet Spot" in Caledonia, Ohio Sat. July 30th around 10 pm.  If you make it to Caledonia, just ask someone where the bar is- it's a tiny town.

This is the 3rd time this bar has been rebuilt after it burned down.  I've only played there once before and it was actually pretty nice inside- the restroom looked like the inside of a feed silo or something.

The natives are extremely "friendly" if you get my drift and the place gets absolutely wild.  I don't normally post my gigs, but this one should be extremely interesting.  If I don't post anymore after next week let me just say it was nice knowing you all.  I might not make it back alive.

Back in Virginia!  The guitar player in my old band has gotten 3 gigs for me and I've wound up in a second band as well.

"The Crossfire Band" will be playing this Friday night, July 29th, at The Hazel River Inn & Restaurant in Culpeper, VA.

Come one, come all.  BTW, it'll be the first time I've played with this band, i.e., no rehearsals.

No offense to everyone here at DC or Bart in particular, but this thread is just one step more exciting than the "chat" room.   :)

So to spice it up, everytime I post one of my upcoming gigs I'm going to post what happened as a follow up as well.  As much as I would love to see all you guys play, usually I'm working or you guys are playing several states if not an entire country away!

So without further ado:

I survived my gig at "The Wet Spot" in Caledonia.  Here's the story.

I gotta tell you, if you blink your eyes you will miss this town!  So I turned around backtracked a mile or two and took the "County Rd. 39" into downtown Caledonia.  I couldn't find the street so I stopped and asked these guys hanging out in the street jawing where the bar was.  He said it was a couple blocks over and then invited me to the Caledonia church the next morning  ::)  Nice friendly folk.  It gets better.  *Well at least from my point of view*

So I find the new bar.  It's brand new cinder block with fresh paint.  Some kids are skateboarding in the front of it.  I give them all a buck- they hold the door for me while I load in and watch my van.

The place is big inside.  Bigger than I remember.  Clean, two big ventilation ducts and a/c.  Big black stage and dressing room, plus a large pull out runway.  Couple trusses of lights.

Someone had their motorcycle in there before and had left two perfect doughnut rubber marks.  The last time I played there some yahoo brought their bike in and did a doughnut/burnout.  It made me sick.

Well thank God that didn't happen this time- I'll save you the melodrama.

Anyways I get set up.  PA and the guitar player get there.  I help move a few things and got back to my drums.

Well I go to do the soundcheck.  The joint is a cement floor with block wall construction/paint.  Talk about slap back!  We manage to get a sound dialed in hoping for some bodies to deaden the room.  I basically have to chase the sound the whole night, but I adapted after the first two sets.  By the third set I was really mopping up the joint and enjoying myself.  Vocals were really happening- I was playing the jelly bean kit and by the end of the night there was quite the mass of undulating, sweating, screaming bodies.  "Play one more" if I had a dollar for everytime someone yelled that, I probably would  ;D >:(.

GOOD crowd- I was pleasantly surprised.  Like I said the people there are extremely friendly.  The 80's band "The Bullet Boys" are there next weekend.  Isn't that something?  Got packed up at 3 and drove a couple of hours back to cleveland.   Smooth ride, nice night- lots of I71 is 3 lanes now.   So that was my gig.

How was yours?

Played at Hazel River Pub in Culpeper Virginia last weekend.  Beautiful place built in the late 1700's.  Amazing post and beam construction with those lovely old brick walls.  Performed with a group consisting of my old guitar player, and a keyboard and bass, neither of whom I've never played with before.  Classic rock, fun time and the band sounded really good.

This weekend I'll be playing at Bangkok Blues* on West Broad Street in Falls Church, VA (my old stomping grounds).  I'll be playing with two guys I've played with before, but not in the same band.  The guitarist invited me to join their group after the last time I played with them.  This week it's surf music, rockabilly, and rock and roll.  I'm pretty much playing their list cold, I'm familiar with a lot of the tunes but I've never actually played them.  Tunes include Ventures, Buddy Holly, Stray Cats, and a bunch of other stuff in those veins.  He even has "Rebel Rouser" by Duane Eddy on the list for some of you oldsters out there.

I'm bringing my four-piece Ludwig blue-sparkle with a bass-drum mounted cymbal, should fit the mood pretty well.  It's about a 2-hour drive, but I'm stoked to play.

<Wow> This will be two weekends in a row that I've gigged.  It's been a while since that's happened </wow>

* It's those Bangkok River Delta Blues

You know wha' ?  I actually have this weekend off but my "dance card" is full already.

I am playing "Sandals" in Mansfield Ohio August 13 (Sat after you I think) if you aren't too far.  Pretty nice bar.  Pretty girls and a big patio in back.

BTW, the name of the band I'm playing with Saturday is The Scott Wells Band.  I went to high school with the bass player.  For those trivia buffs, he was in a band, Artful Dodger, that made it pretty big back in the 70's.

I know y'all were wondering......

Just wanted to toot my own horn before posting the rest of August's gigs. Saturday night we played the Greene county fair in Xenia, Ohio. Despite having to compete with a demolition derby and being the last day of a weeklong fair, we had a great turnout. Lots of kids and lots of dancers. After the show the organizer came up and said that every other band they've ever had charges $500 and we're the only one's to charge a Grand. He said, "You can totally see why. You sound good, you look professional and you put on a helluva show. You can definitly see where the extra money is going." Nice thing to say.

Anyway, next gig is

The Upperdeck
Moraine, Ohio

August 20th
10-2am

Its a biker bar so we'll have to adjust from our "party band" set, I don't think Build me up Buttercup will go over too well.

Riverside Founder's Day Fest
Riverside Ohio
August 27th
2-4:30pm

We will be doing an annual Veteran's Tribute night with the big band.  The local non profit 1KW radio station is going to be doing a live remote broadcast, ala USO shows of the forties. Should be a hoot.

In addition, we are on tap for a local cable show which at least will provide us with a pro grade video for promo purposes. Might even be able to post a clip of the band here.
