Title: My first kit...
Post by: 98mmonaghan on August 30, 2002, 02:10 AM
The post 'How long have you bin playin' just got me thinkin bout my first kit.  I remember it well (mind you, it was only about a year and a half ago).

My Dad came home from the shops one day with this advert for some tiny kit, without much detail, he knew I'd bin keen opn the drums from primary school.  It said £15 ($21.19).  I phoned up this man and arranged to come see it.

At first I thought it would just be some kids old Mickey Mouse kit, but it turned out to be this little Honshu kit with snare, hi-hat, bass and one mounted tom, with powerbeat hats.  All in really bad condition, but playable.  I got them for £10 ($14.70)!

The other day, I found an old recording with that kit, of an old recording I did with my ex-band.  It wasn't as I bad as I remembered.

I sold the kit onto a friend, who sold it onto another friend. I still go round his house and play it sometimes.

My first kit was a brand new, but cheap, Mirage 5 piece in black, which my parents bought for me for £200. I spent the next 6 months paying off half of it ( it was part of the deal, i was 15 at the time ).
I managed to keep that kit for a fair few years. When i eventually sold it the only original feature were the shells, everything else i had replaced, and it sounded half decent, just looked crap! I split the kit, someone bought the Bass drum, snare and stand, hi hat stand and hi hat cymbals and someone else bought the 3 toms, and i managed a total of £130, not bad eh?

was an old whitehall 5-piece i bought for $40 about 9 years ago.  the 13" tom is now two snares.  the rest of it has been recovered in contact paper :), had the bearing edges smoothed up a bit, about half the hardware replaced.  i still play it proudly :)

Tele-Star !!!

Check this massive kit. It had a snare with it just out of the picture. I may not have known to put the snare between my knees at that time but you can see I was already a pro by the cocky smirk... 8)

The guitarist may notice  the vintage Gibson and Gretch guitars. The were pawn shop specials bought used. The looked old when my brothers got them.

I would love to see a picture when you are done. I wished I still had the set in the picture but I destroyed them in a few-years time being the unruley child that I was.

The last I saw my kit they were set up in a 10ftx10ftx70ft culvert that went under the highway. It was like a giant echo chamber and when you played the drums in there it could be heard for miles. We used it to call the neighborhood kids to the swimming hole that was formed on the downstream side of the culvert. Then the spring rains came and I never saw them again... :'(

Thanks guys.  I haven't thought about that kit in a very long time.  It was in 1964 and I bought it in a pawn shop.  This was back when pawn shops were real pawn shops with stuff stacked around everywhere and it was fun to explore--not the supermarket squeaky clean stores of today.  It was an old red sparkle POS and I think I paid less than $75 for it, but thinking back that was a lot of money for a 14 year old kid back then.  I guess you always remember that first kit.  And now we interrupt this stroll down memory lane to take you back to the real world.
