Title: Snare Head--Batter side
Post by: Jason00 on January 17, 2002, 10:55 AM
Bartman--

What Aquarian head to you recommend for the snare batter side?  I have a texture coated with power dot right now, but I want to get a lower, more projecting attack.  I like the description and the look of the Jack DeJohnette, but is that a feasible pick for a snare head?

Or is this more of a tuning issue than a head selection issue?

Thanks.

When you say texture coated with the power-dot, are you talking about the Aquarian TDPD batter head? If so, I absolutely love that drumhead. The dot is on the underside of the drumhead, so it doesn't interfere with brush work and the overall feel of the head. It does make the head last longer, especially if you play heavy back-beats.

TCPD is on the far left.

I have the Aquarian TD on most of my snares however, which is just a plain white, textured coated head. I have the TD-10, TD-12, TD-13 and TD-14 which are all used on the appropriate sized snare drums. The Aquarian Texture Coated drumheads (seen below) are also my favorite tom-tom batter heads.

I use the Aquarian Jack DeJohnette head at times. It's basically a textured coated head that has been treated so that it's black, rather than white. This "treatment" gives the a darker sound than the regular textured heads; really nice for brush work. I don't think it's going to give you what you are looking for, which is more projecting attack. In my opinion, the TCPD is going to give you the most projecting attack ... as far as drumheads go. You're right to assume that the tuning and even the drum itself will greatly affect your projection.

Jack DeJohnette head on far right

And ... the coating on Aquarian drumheads lasts 100 TIMES LONGER than Remo drumheads.
