Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: Turner on April 14, 2005, 01:47 PM Hi guys - I'm a newbie over here...I'm curious what cymbals you like the most.
I personally think the sabian paragons are sweet...I'm a fan of whatever Neil Peart is into Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: 563 on April 14, 2005, 01:57 PM Depends on the sound I'm after. I have two collections, which generally cover my needs.
My fave more traditional sounds are the Istanbul Sultans. I have Agops and some from before Agop and Mehmet split. My fave less traditional sounds that are still traditionally useable are Swiss made budget Paistes from the 60's like the Ludwigs and Stanoples. And I have one oddball I'm in love with but can't find consistant use for. Its a 22" Keplinger stainless steel. Gorgeous weird thing. Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: felix on April 14, 2005, 06:31 PM My fav cymbals are my Paiste Sound Formula's. Lots of sentimental value.
Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: Dave Heim on April 14, 2005, 07:07 PM Always been a Zildjian guy. I have some old A's, some newer K's, and most recently I invested in the K Custom Session series.
Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: 563 on April 14, 2005, 07:11 PM My fav cymbals are my Paiste Sound Formula's. Lots of sentimental value. Plus a decent collectable value and killer sound. :) Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: Ranman on April 14, 2005, 09:19 PM Got Paiste Signatures all around cept for my 2002 China but the very favorities are my 14" Signature Dark Crisp Hi Hats.
Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: bongo on April 14, 2005, 11:05 PM I play about 80 gigs a year in mostly small to medium rooms. I use a 4 piece Ludwig kit with three suspended cymbals and a set of 14" hats.
The cymbals I use most are a 20" Zildjian A ride dating from the late 50's I would guess. It looked old when I got it at 13 in 1967. Also have a good 18" crash/ride K Zildjian I bought new in '74. I really like that one and use it a lot. I switch around on the hats and 16" crash, but mostly use Z Customs anymore. I own a full set of Sultan Agop Istanbuls, which I like using too. I break 'em out when I feel like it. I heard a nice Zildjian flat ride recently which I liked. I'm afraid I'd miss the bell, so I didn't lay the money down, but I keep thinking about it and may go back. Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: 7lazy8 on April 15, 2005, 06:30 AM I have a 16" Paiste Alpha that I plan on playing until it is nothing but shards of scrap metal. ;D
Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: dannydrumperc on April 15, 2005, 06:54 AM My collection is still small, but I already have 3 that earned a special place in my heart:
20" K medium ride 16" K medium-thin dark crash 14" A paper-thin crash Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: Turner on April 15, 2005, 11:03 AM My fav cymbals are my Paiste Sound Formula's. Lots of sentimental value. Nice when did you get those???? Those must be killer. Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: Turner on April 15, 2005, 11:05 AM Hey - are you guys voting for the Drummies - its Drum! Magazines readers poll...I have a bet with a buddy on whos winning best cymbals and drums
Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: gnombient on April 17, 2005, 02:17 PM A friend of mine gave me an old cracked 20" Paiste chinese cymbal a couple years ago that I absolutely love; it has such an amazing palette of sounds that can be coaxed out of it when struck, bowed, rubbed, etc.
Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: Danno on April 18, 2005, 01:16 PM I personally think the sabian paragons are sweet...I'm a fan of whatever Neil Peart is into I love my Sabian Signature cymbals - to me, they sound better than any cymbals except Zildjian K's, which sound just as good, but the Sabians are more consistent than the K's (IMO). I have a Paragon crash (16"), an 18" HH crash/ride, a 20" HH medium ride, and 14" HH regular hats. I don't think you can buy nicer sounding cymbals at any price. I bought all of them on eBay. While you don't get to hear the cymbal before you buy, you get great cymbals at about half their retail price. Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: Turner on April 22, 2005, 04:15 PM I agree - paragon crash is amazing - that's a great range you put together.
I've never bought anything on eBay - I always like playing with the cymbal first. Speaking of Sabian - have you seen them in Drum this month? What do you think? Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: marker on April 22, 2005, 05:22 PM Best sounding - 16" Paiste Signature Fast Crash. However, expensive and short life span.
Favorite - 14" Zildjian A New Beat hi hats, bought in the 70's. Still cooking, no cracks, always sound good. I think I got my money's worth. :) Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: n00bie on April 22, 2005, 05:29 PM Well I personally like Sabian. I really like the sound of the top-end Zildjian cymbals but they are pretty expensive.
I've got Sabian Pro Sonix - very good set in my opinion! ;D Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: Dave Heim on April 23, 2005, 09:07 AM 18" A Zildjian Swish from the 70's, played upside down. All the rivets have now fallen out and I like it even better that way.
My latest fav is the 16" crash from the K Custom Session series. Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: Drumodad on April 30, 2005, 05:28 PM A. Zildjian cymbals. New beat hats. Although I do have a set of Sabian hats on an x-hat.Its pretty cool to have the two hat sounds.
Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: tamboricua on May 04, 2005, 09:53 AM My favorite cymbal these days is Sabian's HHX 17" Evolution Effeks crash. It's an extra thin model with a down-turned edge, ideal for the hand percussionist.

I've got a Pro Sonix top hihat with an Accelerator on the bottom. I like it but but it's not very versitile. I'm not a fan of the sound when it's closed. But if you open it up a bit and give it some power, it has a really sweet sound. Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: B on May 05, 2005, 10:22 PM My favorite cymbal is a 17" Zildjian A Custom Crash. Too bad I don't own one :'(
Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: sirdrumalot on May 11, 2005, 07:21 PM I have two favorite cymbals, and they're both crashes. 1. Sabian HHX 16 in. Stage Crash: Very full, raw, powerful sound for a 16 in. 2. Sabian Hand Hammered 18 in. Dark Crash: Very Glassy, clean sound, with an excellent cut. It also works well as a ride. Title: Fav. cymbals Post by: drumzealot on June 10, 2005, 12:13 AM Wow! You bring up a deep topic.
It all depends on the situation. Most of my work is on the drum set. Crashes: Zildjian Custom As are very nice. The 17 inch makes a great suspended cymbal for any situation. Rides: Paiste Traditional Series and 2002s are great. So are the Zildjian Constantinoples. Smaller Cymbals: I like the UFIP Natural Series Title: Re:Fav. cymbals Post by: Vintage Ludwig on June 10, 2005, 12:32 AM Without a doubt my favorite cyms. are all pAisTe. The usual go to cyms. are all 70s 2002. The lathing and hammering are different compared to the red labels, and they arent as bright as the Signature series. I love any sound edge hight hats, and really dig the 18 and 20 crash cyms. I like my 24 ride-nice wash, anvil sound for a bell, very defined no matter what part of the pie you are playing. And the 24 has a crash that'll make your gums bleed! I cant pick just 1 as my fav. but I hands down choose the 70s 2002 pAisTe line.
