Title: Mis match hats Post by: xXxBURYyourDEADxXx on September 20, 2005, 06:44 PM Uh has anyone ever used mis match hats?
well im think about buying these hats of this kid, the top one is a A custom and the bottum is a B8 pro. hmmm what should i expect. im using B8's right now, ahh there so nasty.ahhaa Title: Mis match hats Post by: Mister Acrolite on September 20, 2005, 07:00 PM Sure, I mix and match as I see fit. I like using the top cymbal from my HH Manhattan Groove Hats over the bottom cymbal from a pair of AAX Stage Hats. I've mixed brands, models, even sizes. I also play my main pair of hats upside down, using the heavier bottom cymbal as my top cymbal, which gives me more high end and greater durability.
Whatever sounds good! Title: Re:Mis match hats Post by: jameswalker on September 20, 2005, 07:10 PM "Me, too."
I've had good (sometimes very good) results with: - an old Istanbul K top, Zildjian New Beat bottom - Paiste Dimensions (thin) top, NB bottom Especially in the case of the Istanbul K/New Beat combo, it was a really nice blend - I got the darker stick sound of the K on top, but the heavier NB bottom gave a much stronger "chik" sound when I used the hi hat pedal. Same idea with the Dimensions/NB combo. Quote Whatever sounds good! Truer words have never been written. ;D Title: Mis match hats Post by: eeldip on September 20, 2005, 07:33 PM you shouldnt even feel limited by using "high hats" must less matching.
that funny china/splash pack at GC, the wuhans, for $40. some great toy cymbals to hit around if you have $40 laying around. anyway, china on bottom, splash on top. sounds totally wrong. but you know.. you might like it. drums are about hitting @$%#. dont worry about what you hit as long as it sounds good. sorry, repeating advice... wait let me modify it slightly.. also, sometimes if it looks good its worth it. or if it raises an eyebrow. you know, if you are hitting something that causes you to get a write up in the weekly, sounds worth it to me. Title: Re:Mis match hats Post by: Ranman on September 20, 2005, 07:40 PM I would hit a bicycle frame welded to a cymbal stand with one hand and smack that ass with the other if it would rock me.
Title: Mis match hats Post by: eeldip on September 20, 2005, 07:49 PM i hope you are smacking the ass of the titclapper right?
Title: Re:Mis match hats Post by: Drum4JC (Todd) on September 20, 2005, 08:50 PM I would hit a bicycle frame welded to a cymbal stand with one hand and smack that ass with the other if it would rock me. Good one Ranman! I don't have a lot to choose from, but I've goofed around by putting my 14" K Custom crash in place of one of the hi/hat cymbals I use. If I had the dough, I'd pick up a variety of small cymbals to mix and match with. Title: Re:Mis match hats Post by: xXxBURYyourDEADxXx on September 20, 2005, 09:30 PM Ha k thats good, i dnt feeel like a idiot anymore. now who knows. the possibilitys are endless.
well i mean, im trading a pair of b8's for A custom and a b8 pro. hahaha. dnt ask what happend to the origianly A customs i had. I lost them in a game of chance. tear tear.. but about wuhan, i got a 12" china today, omg this lil thing kills. hhahaaha having a great time. Title: Mis match hats Post by: Louis on September 20, 2005, 09:37 PM In the past I have mixed hats a lot. Now it is pretty much the Paiste 505s all the time. I guess I am just too lazy to swap them around.

Man I gotta try that! Title: Mis match hats Post by: Pipus on September 21, 2005, 08:26 AM I'm new here so Hi to all.
I have 2 sets of HH, one is a mis-matched Sabian AA set (2 bottoms, 1 Rock on bottom, 1 Regular on top), and a pair of Zld's A Quick Beats. The Sabian's are my main HH, but sometimes, a switch the regular top for tje QB top, or put the Sabian top bottom with the QB top on top, both with great results. Don't really like the sound of any of the Sabian's on top of the QB bottom. Pipus Title: Re:Mis match hats Post by: audiomortis on September 21, 2005, 09:48 AM I'm often trying to buy single HH cymbals for just this purpose. I play my main hats (Istanbul Empire hats) upside down right now.
Title: Re:Mis match hats Post by: Naigewron on September 21, 2005, 03:53 PM My favourite hats are sort of mismatched ones, although they're an official product: The Zildjian K/Z. K top cymbal, Z Custom Dyno Beat bottom. Sounds awesome!
Title: Mis match hats Post by: TheBeachBoy on September 22, 2005, 03:01 PM that funny china/splash pack at GC, the wuhans, for $40. some great toy cymbals to hit around if you have $40 laying around. anyway, china on bottom, splash on top... I tried that at practice one day. Not a bad sound. It made me want to experiment, so I bought another wuhan splash and put the heavier of the two on bottom, light on top. It will be perfect for a c-o-c-ktail kit at our acoustic shows. Title: Mis match hats Post by: eeldip on September 22, 2005, 03:24 PM awesome, happy to see the wuhan china splash high hat spread.
i like the sound, its super light on attack. just a little woosh sound. when you mic it up, it almost sounds like a high hat mixed with a spritzing aerosol can. if you know what i mean. yea, wuhans are basically just great to mess with, i have a set of their S high hats. i like mixing them with stuff... on their own they are a little loud and harsh to my ears. but they have a trashy complexity that is nice. if all those adjectives make sense,.... Title: Mis match hats Post by: ayotteTL on November 17, 2005, 05:38 AM My hi hat dream has come true with an old 1965ish Paiste Stambul Top w/ 70's 602 Sound Edge bottom. I don't think I can do better. Perfect for Jazz playing or R&B,Funk. They're light but not superthin either. To me vintage is always better for hats cuz I like em light.
Just so mellow and easy on the ears. Can play subtleties like feathery crashes by a quick but light flick of the pedal to get that "light ching" that can accent a jazz ballad. Love hats that can do that well. No matter how hard I used to try to do that w/ medium weight hats they always sounded ugly in comparison. Experiment tho cuz most people don't bother . I'm glad I did. Let me know if you need that bike frame welded! ;D Title: Mis match hats Post by: Shoeless on November 17, 2005, 06:32 AM At present I'm experimenting with sounds for a solo recording project (its my project and i'll try what i want to).
I have a 12" Camber on the bottom. On the top I have a Zildian Ride cymbal that I snipped all the way to 12" around years ago due to a crack. Its so thick and heavy and gives a great chink. On top of that, still within the clutch, I have a 10" splash. So I got the great chink, and 2 different clangy surfaces on top. I could spend hours figuring out all the sounds and applications I could get out of it. |
