Post by: Bart Elliott on January 08, 2006, 11:18 PM
Drummers and percussionists like to share pictures of their gear as much as they like to see what the next guy/gal is using. Drum porn or whatever you want to call it ... this is the place to share and show it.

Please only post a few photos and keep the file sizes small. Large images really slow down the forum's load time, so if possible, consider posting the URL (links) to the images/pics/photos.

Also ... let's not get into a bunch of responses to these posts. Keep this thread about posting images only.

Haha, Keith has become a measurement :)

They're not quite that high. I like them just above eye-level. I think the photos make them look higher than they are too, since all of them are taken be people on the floor in front of a 3-foot stage.

Heres my Grestch Catalina Rock. Its not the best kit but i took the Mr.A thousand dollar drumset advice and then went a bit overboard. Since i bought a cheaper kit i was able to buy all dw 9000 and 5000 hardware, remo heads and pork pie snares. I then searched cymbalholic, ebay and pawn shops and came up with an amazing array of new and vintage top end zildjians. I'm so glad i took everyones advice here or you'd probably be looking at a pork pie 4 peice with all b8 cymbals and pacific hardware! The kit is a bit diff now since this is an older picture. Now its all fitted with remo coated heads cept on the bass drum clear powerstroke 3. Also it has a dw 9000 single pedal and the 18" floor tom is now being used as a bass drum ocassionaly. Also I have taken that splash off due to the fact that im not booming my left side crash and never really like how i mounted the splash with that dw robot arm looking thing. I think im going to use a stacker and put it on top of a crash or something not sure. If anyone could give me some ideas on how to mount that splash i'd be stoked.

So that is a Zickos kit. I've heard of them but have'nt actually ever seen one...
that is not a typical zickos kit however.. i've never actually seen a factory 18 bass drum, although i have met someone online who says they have one. the small sizes are incredibly rare. almost 3 years of looking on ebay and i've only ever seen one 14x14, the one you see on my kit. and only a few 8x12 toms. i made the bass from a cracked floor tom. i sawed the cracked end off and moved the lugs to make a 13x18 bass. i turned the leg mounts into spur mounts and the l-arm mount. it was quite the experience cutting down and drilling the acrylic shell.

the typical 70's zickos kit looked more like this one, except with 2 toms. sizes: 18x22, 10x14, 18x18.

i had this bigger rock kit first, but i recently sold it.

Not my main kit, but straight from the Mr. A school of  making a cheap set sound great.

Set on e-bay  with shipping  $ 170.00  (brand new)
New Heads all around          $   65.00
New snare wires                    $   15.00
Resold all hardware that
came with set on e-bay.        <$110.00>

Net cost                                     $  140.00

Now this doesn't include the value of my cymbals and stands
But the kit sounds great and for what I have into it I don't bother with cases, and really don't worry about letting others play it

Beautiful kit, i envy you.  Except i don't like my toms to wiggling around like a bellydancer- but that's me.  I just wanted to say (in non smart-a$$ manner) that i think keeping your china upside down (or wrong side up, depending how you look at it) might be ruining it...probably puts some crazy dents in your sticks too.  please switch it  :-X

Oh Well, yea the smoking is a problem that I find with most musicians that I know.  I quit about 8 years ago.  I am about the only one that doesn't smoke.  I do most of the vocal work so I take care of my throat and lungs.  It was a picture of a 2 class 25 year high school reunion we did summer before last and I am still playing with this group.  It was taken during our
Led Zed medley.  HeartBreaker into BlackDog into Whole lotta Love into drum solo into Boogie Mamma and back to Heartbreaker.  I had just gotten done with the solo and I stand up to do the Boogie Mamma thing with my guitar player Bill.
This alway's goes over really good.  It was done at the Phoenix Bar and Grill's ball room in Lexington Ky. Thanks for checking it out!

Yea,
I agree but we had two special guest guitar players on the last set.  That make for 3 and a bunch of show.  Each guitar player had at least 3 guitars.  Had to put them somewhere!!

Great setups folks.  Hey SnowdogYYZ, you need to get a black galaxy acrolite to go with that!  Funny, until I typed your name I didn't get the Rush reference.  Just thought you liked snowy dogs.

Funny you should say that... I DO have one!  I also have a black sparkle birch custom absolute snare as well. I have about 7-8 snares that I rotate in and out all the time. The "blacrolite" as James Walker has penned it (or was it Mr. A?) is quite a nice sounding snare, considering it is the cheapest in the bunch.

PS- the snare in the pics is my 6.5x14 Manu Katche Signature, which I bought after hearing rave reviews from a couple of members here.

Here's my '70s Ludwig 3-ply green sparkle rewraps on their first gig!  Well, their first gig since I rebuilt them anyway...   Also note the Supra 402.  Really looking at home there as opposed to with the Yammies...

BTW, the soundman said they sounded great mic'd up, and kept raving about them between sets!  Really made my day after all that work!   ;D

Nice Kit.  I do like the medal flake.  Used to have a red medal flake set.  They are at a local Music, New and Used consignment
store now.  I may live to regret it.  I didn't need 3 drum kits.
I kept the two best and one of them was a Green/Blue label Ludwig set, but it is Black. These are pretty good Quality drums.
Yours look very nice.  I am sure they sound good too!

MVP wrap, nice. I plan on owning one in a few years. I decided not to get one right now, couldn't really justify dropping the money on it. I know Chef Doug has a huge one and so does Zalloy..actually his is huge too. I think a guy posted up his PP kit awhile ago saying he was the drummer for matchbook romance. Right now I just play snares.

Title: Re:Anyone here play a full pork pie kit?
Post by: Pirate Pig on February 08, 2006, 12:53 PM
just to make MYSELF feel better i'll just talk about the pork pie that was...almost mine. lol. I had been trying to get a used PP for awhile almost got a pink sparkle one on ebay for 800 (3 toms +bass) but at the last minute it went up to like 1300. So I was convinced to get a nice used one. There was a used tobacco burst laquer PP at guitar center. 10x8 and 14x12 toms and 20x18 bass. They wanted like 1500 or something like that, but it was a big sale and the kit has some big chunks of laquer out of the hoops with some overall scratches. It needed a new set of heads too, they had been listing it on ebay forever so I figured @$%# they want to get rid of this bad boy. I tried to get them down to 900 with no avail. They got all tough about it and i said keep it, I went out and bought my current kit with the 900 dollars. Few weeks later guess who I get a call from...asking if i still want that kit. I told them I had already purchased a kit. I always wonder if they had finally broke and were willing to go down around the price i wanted to pay. Oh well, I nevere see it on ebay so I guess somone got it.

Little squealer drum kit, could this be pork pies economy line kit?! When I was at the pork pie shop i saw a larger little squealer snare in the office, I didn't ask about it but i was curious. Man that thing is in prime sizes. I wonder what this is going to turn out to be.

Hi Moosetication,
I checked out your pic's too and I see your into the Natural  wood look too.  Yours are a little different shade but I like them. Yes, I am into pies/Paiste cymbals.  I will go to my grave believing that the Swiss make the best cymbals.  I have 15 and I can think of two more I would love to have.  A 24 in. 2002 Ride
and a 20in Flange Ride from their Exotic series. I have also thought about replacing the Roto Toms with two matching toms.
I do use them for solos and music like Santana where I am trying to make up for the missing congo and bongo drums.
Glad you liked my pictures. Thanks!

Title: Tama Starclassic Exotix I in Custom Sizes
Post by: 563 on February 14, 2006, 10:29 AM
I just wanted to say (in non smart-a$$ manner) that i think keeping your china upside down (or wrong side up, depending how you look at it) might be ruining it...probably puts some crazy dents in your sticks too.  please switch it  :-X

Many folks (myself included) mount their chinas like that.  Especially if they're more "pang" style (turkish style bell, lighter flange), as they're often used as rides.   And it wont hurt your sticks if you're playing the bow of the cymbal, and not the edge (as most folks riding one will do).

Honestly, mounting chinas in the way most folks do (bell down) requires it being screwed down tighter, which is what can ruin a cymbal.   Mounting it bell up gives it a chance to sway.

Title: Show us your ...
Post by: drumnut1 on February 14, 2006, 10:43 AM
I prefer my china's bell up.  I have seen them both ways. I have a Nova china which is made with the rim down and regular china with the rim up.  The bell on the Nova has a very unique sound. Again, I don't think there is a wrong way, unless you play the Cymbal with to much slant. Then you have to worry about key holeing, (stretching the hole), and damaging the cymbal.

Hehe, you should`ve seen the overhead mic on the last recordings i did Joker. I could almost touch the overhead with my head. It`s a very large recording room indeed, but I get a full and open sound in there. Hopefully I`ll get out a soundfile of the recording as soon as we`ve got all the other instruments recorded. We started recording the drums 3 a.m and after severeal cups of coffee we were done at 8.30 p.m.... The next day; very close to insanity...  8)

No, they are not real DW's, although those lugs do look like the old Workshop Series.
They are the newish Pacific FXR all-birch drums, and I just get a kick (pun intended) out of having a DW front head on them.
This is a burning rock machine: 18x22, 6x14 snare, and 9x12 and 14x16 toms. The crashes are 18" and 17" A Medium Crashes, with the 17 on the right and the 18 on the left--I like it that way for some reason. The ride is a big bad 22" K Heavy Ride, and the hats are an old new beat bottom and a newer quick beat top, which basically makes them new beats. All my cymbals are ebay specials, and I paid $380 for all of them, and the ride makes up more than half that.

So, I went on vacation for the last 11 days and my wife found an acro for 50 bucks to add to the collection.  It is the one on the left.

It is 100% original, including the heads and still sounds SWEET!

As you can see in the picture, the acro that I already have has a broken plastic wingnut on the snare stand's height adjustment.  Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?  Obviously I can get a standard wingnut, but I'm looking for one that has ludwig stamped into it that matches the rest of the wingnuts.

Ok, I'm going to show the same old Ludwig Blue Sparkles.

BUT, I wanted to show off my new digs.

I was playing in a walk-in closet when I was living in Louisiana, now I've graduated to an entire corner of the basement:

For sure!  The only thing is that my wife probably liked the closet better because you couldn't hear my drums AT ALL in the house.  She gets to hear my drums nice and LOUD now upstairs when I'm playing in the basement.  Heck, she doesn't even get to hear the music I'm playing to thru headphones.

My Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Nouveu vintage finishcame yesterday..
OH MY.
I am stoked I ordered these.  I am still waiting for my virgin kick (6 mos.) and they ordered the wrong 16" tom (wanted 16x16 floor, go 16x14 rack), but they sound beautiful.  Even made me more confidant of my tuning abilities.

Nice looking Yams there, jermdogg.  It looks very similar to my Maryland kit.  :)

By the way, this is the first time I'm playing with a 16x14 (w/ legs) and I must admit that I really love it.  Besides the great sound, it's easier for load in/load out, so I'm glad I have it instead of the 16x16.

Post by: jermdogg on March 06, 2006, 10:34 AM
Thanks, Jeep!

Yeah, I wouldn't mind so much the tom being 16x14, but without legs, things get a-shakin' too much for my taste.  (wobble-wobble) =)

6,8,10, 12, 14, 16, 18" roto toms w/ PS3 heads
20x18 Ludwig reissue bass with psycedellic red wrap
custom 13x6 burl maple snare by RhthymKing (still to come) with fibreskin3/ps3 heads

Nothing fancy, just a quick shot of my rig at the moment, complete with dual cd player (with pitch control), drum machine and mirror.  Alot of guys are using MP3 players with their practice rigs.  I would like to find one that can slow down program material.  That would be cool!

Beautiful drums and pics as always Paradrum- kudos to you!

I haven't seen pocket-sized mp3-players that do this, but I generally use my laptop with Winamp, and there are plugins to winamp that will slow down your mp3's without altering pitch (and the other way around, etc...). So yeah, the technology exists  ;D

Bah, while I'm here and everything, here's a shot from last week's gig. My all-Meinl cymbal setup is coming along nicely. I've spotted rides and hats I want too, but I've run out of cash at the moment  ::)

Here are my Yamahas. It's a Recording Custom kit from early 90's. 24" bass drum with 5 toms and -67 Ludwig Acrolite snare. My cymbals are all Zildjians, A Quick Beat 14" Hi-Hats, K 20" Ride and 16" & 18" A-Custom Crashes. There is also the LP Rock Cowbell. The hardware is from Yamaha, Tama and Pearl mainly. Title: My new snare drum
Post by: felix on March 28, 2006, 10:27 AM
Hi guys.

I popped for a matching snare drum for the the Delite kit yesterday!

It's a 5x14.  You guys probably don't care to much but I'm sure geeked!!!!  I had been using the 6x14 ferromang designer, but it's just SO much drum for the little Delites.

So I played my friends Sonor Jubilee snare which is the same drum as this only with a signature badge and black hardware- boy was I knocked out.  So hopefully mine will sound almost as good as his.  I didn't have a maple snare until now...so it's about time!

Wow, that's a nice one man.

What kind of throw is that?

Thanks!  It came out pretty well, altho in person the finish doesn't look as good as it does in those photos.  From the research I did, my understanding is that one should use water-based finishes on purpleheart - the other kinds will adversely react with the purpleheart - so I ended up using the only one I could find around here, which was water-based polycrylic.  Royal pain - I hate doing brush-on finishes, and I don't have the equipment or the expertise to spray finishes.

The throw is the much-maligned Nickel throw.  I've heard the same horror stories about them falling apart, but I've had three on various drums over the years, and I've yet to have any such trouble (touch wood).  Eventually, tho, I'll probably replace this with another throw, the Ayotte "Drumsmith" throw (which is similar in design to the Noble & Cooley throw - very simple, very easy to use).

That, and I'm also thinking of getting black hoops for it.   ;)

Folks, just revisited the thread.  Thanks for the great comments!

Here are some responses:

Dave From Chicago- I saw Bruford playing stacked cowbells with Earthworks and shamelessly copied him.
bryanseyes- Hanging toms are not a problem for me; pangs and swishes are made to be played bell-up.
Jim Walker-  ;D
felix- the snare is a Mapex Deep Forest Cherry, and much as I hate to admit it, it isn't pink in person (but it is beautiful).

I really love this kit.  And its beauty is not just skin deep!

Thanks again for all your kind words.

Awesome bilkay.  Totally awesome.

Well guys maybe some of you remember when the 80's noble and cooley was gravitating around my universe?

The tuning godz have smiled upon your humble brother felix the cat.

I don't know how to say this since I ain't no shakespeare but here's the story felix style:

The dude who owns the kit called me out of the blue today (we sorta run in the same circle of friends (historically) but we never hang, he just moved back up from Florida- I have not seen him in years), he called me up and wants to write a record in my studio (I guess) so in the meantime he's going to leave his drums over there a couple of months.  ???  !!! wha???  I got gooseflesh.

I said no.

THen I said no way.

Then he later on we talked and he said he would leave them over there for three months!

I said no way, they are crap... (we laughed).

Needless to say I am geeked.  I hope to do some decent work on them to share with you guys.

peace,
f.

Yes, my wife had a realisation like that too. It might have been when I bought her those earrings in the shape of a drum kit.

Nice kit. I know you mentioned the colour wasn't your faourite, but I think it's rather nice.

It's not a bad color, in fact it looks 100% better in person than the pictures would indicate, but I always said that my next set would be a white pearl or oyster finish, because that's what my old Ludwigs were when I played in the early 70's.

The wife "thing" has already passed, as when she was watching us jam last night, she said I looked "sexy" behind the set. Love is a many splendored thing indeed, as only true love could see me sweating and think "sexy". Must be the drums!

Here, I'll clue you in, WP. Women always think a man looks sexy when he is doing something that he is passionate about. Maybe that's why girls fall for musicians so much  ;D

smyth,
With the rakish angles of your snare and hats and those mini sizes, I can totally hear the be-bop coming out of that small room. That set-up looks like it's built for tone.
Congrats on your lovely kit.

In addition to the Supra-Phonic I also use a Brass Shell, Super-Sensitive, Black Beauty w/tube lugs as well as a Acrolite, both 5 x 14's. For a wood shell I have a mid-60's 6.5 x 14 Premier.............

Thanks for the comments all..............

Chris, even though you can't make it out in the photo that's actually a Clocktagon {Clock} so it isn't an actual cymbal. I do refinishing work for a friend who is a Sabian Dealer and he passed it along to me as a way of saying thanks since I never accept the money he offers. He also sells Zildjians & Paistes and soon I'll be going in and receiving my "employee" discount on a set of 2002's, which is how I usually receive compensation for all the work I do for him. Deep discounts..................

Jack,
Are those coated studio x's with power dots? How do you like them? I am usually an Evans coated G2 guy, but I've been thinking about trying some Aquarians and those look like they're up my alley.

Bingo, that's exactly what they are Chris! Personally I like 'em but heads are such a subjective piece of equipment so results may vary.

I tried many different heads and was looking to have some resonance but not too much, if you know what I mean. These heads walked that fine line nicely and depending on how I tune them have proven to be quite versatile.............

I'm in the process of recovering two late 80's Ludwig toms w/long lugs, an 11 x 12 & 12 x 13, that I will use clear Studio X's {sans power dot} on for a more classic rock sound, i.e. less resonance / deeper tone. This will allow me to do a quick swap out on the two mounted toms with only the 16 requiring a head change to get a much different sound. I run Aquarian Classic Clears, which is a single ply, on my reso's.............

So many of the kits in this thread look so pretty and new. My kit isn't like that. I've had most of my drums for about 10 years, and they were all second hand (V-Club aside). One day I hope to refinish all my shells so they all match and look cool, but for now I'm just worrying about my playing. hah!

This is my current set up. My room is small, and this kit takes up most of it. It was very hard for me to fit the whole kit in a single pic. Nevermind the pinstripe head. It's just a figment of your imagination. I want to swap the kick head over to a CA as well.

In this setup:

16x22 kick : Premier
5.5x14 snare : CB 700 Educational Percussion (lol)
7x10 rack : Slingerland
11x12 rack : Premier
12x13 rack : Premier
15x16 floor : Royce
16x16 floor : Premier
15" Zildjian hats (not sure of series, very old. aquired with vintage Slingerland kit)
16" Sabian B8 Thin Crash
18" Zildjian ZXT Rock Crash
20" Sabian Pro Dry Ride
20" Sabian B8 Ride
22" Zildjian Ping Ride
Roland TD-6 Brain
5 PD-6 pads
2 CY-6 dual trigger cymbal pads
hat control and kick trigger
and a 6" toy tamborine

When I get a new head for it, I'm replacing the 22" kick with my 24" Slingerland. I'd like to then replace one of the 16" floor toms with the 22" kick, as a floor tom. I also have a deep Slingerland snare that needs new hardware that I'm really dying to use again. I have the TD-6 going to a 200W PA. I've been playing around with different samples on the pads, but I really like keeping an 808 kick on the kick trigger. I know most of you probably think this is a very strange combo... but I love to play on it. I'm the type who will try to mount anything and everything. I like all percussive sounds.

I'd love to hear that royce... I love those drums.  The premiers probably sound alot better but I am sentimentally attached to royce kits.

The Royce sounds just fine. It's from a 5pc kit that belongs to my friend. I'm using that one instead of my other two 16s, because this one only has a 15" depth and I have it tuned a little higher than the other 16. My friend disses his Royce kit a lot, saying it's nothing special. I love it! Maybe one of these days when he gets strapped for cash I can take his whole Royce kit off his hands heheh. I'm just a sucker for all drums really. I wish I had a bigger room.

For those who think the concept of a micro kit for subway travelers is new, here's a kit for streetcar travelers, circa 1920's.  13x3 snare, 8x24 bass, (both one ply maple).  Came with a 1917 Ludwig Jr pedal equipped with a cymbal beater. Except for the obvious corrosion on the  bottom snare hoop, the plating is in decent shape.  The bass even still had maple sanding dust on the inside. The lacquer on the outside is a little beat up but the insides look like thay were made yesterday.

I also have a bunch of same-period goodies kicking around that I will add to it.  The label is a real hoot .

Niiiiiiiiice! Love the cymbals, and the DW! Are those New Beats? My favourite hats by far. Not personally keen on 4-piece kits, but I admire the ability to be satisfied with only two toms.

Thanks!!

It's a fake DW--Pacific birch FXR with a DW front head to both indulge my sarcasm and make me strive to play the kit up to its (falsely) advertised standards.

The hats are a Quick Beat top and an older New Beat bottom. They sound good and solid, nothing groundbreaking or anything.
The rest are 18" and 19" A Medium crashes and a 22" K Heavy ride. All bought on the cheap on Ebay.

As for the 4-piece, I just happened to always play that way. Something about it appealed to me. Now I am glad because I play lots of gigs even those 4 drums barely fit into my car or the band van. Most smalling touring rock drummers I see these days use 4 piece kits, which I presume is mostly for convenience's sake in the van and on small stages.

I think everyone should play a 4 piece for a while. As my music theory teacher used to say, "restrictions shall set you free!"

I agree. I do sometimes play a 4-piece setup at rehearsals, and it's cool to see what I suddenly find myself doing, but to do all the things in my toolbox (and that the songs we play demand), I need those three toms.

As long as I'm in here, I'll show off my new Gretsch mini snare and new setup. The snare was bought purely on recommendations from this forum, and I love it. Great poppy little thing for intros or light pop songs etc.
