Title: Just a short 1 meg snippet Post by: felix on January 09, 2006, 07:49 AM Here is a snippet of what kind of drum sound I'm "twisting up" in the studio. It's fresh from this weekend's past work.
Let me know what you think of my sound? ;D This is mixed thru the muckie so things should be a bit more "sparkly" when I get my new board. I'm using the 12 strand equalizer wires on my snare *Yes I thought they were 16 until I counted them! http://www.woolyinc.com/Sound Files/My death snip.mp3 (http://www.woolyinc.com/Sound Files/My death snip.mp3) (I only have dial up, so if the first time you try to download doesn't werk, wait about 10 and you should have it- sorry and thanks) Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Christopher on January 09, 2006, 09:31 AM Sounds cool Felix. Love the toms.
I was messing around with different mic positions recently, just experimenting with heights and angles and I got sick of playing with just a click. I threw down one of my favorite “drumless†songs to play along with and here’s what it sounded like. Landslide.mp3 (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/ckkod/Landslide.mp3) Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: felix on January 09, 2006, 09:44 AM High and dry. What's your rig?
Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Christopher on January 09, 2006, 09:48 AM Just my little home recording thing. The mic I was messing with was a Marshall 603s overhead.
Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: felix on January 09, 2006, 10:06 AM That's a pretty kick ass recording for one microphone.
Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Christopher on January 09, 2006, 10:13 AM That's a pretty kick ass recording for one microphone. Thanks dude. Doesn't compare to what you're getting though. What do you have on the toms there? Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: felix on January 09, 2006, 10:30 AM You know, I think they might be remo ambassadors but honest to Pete- they are the stock heads on my delite toms.
Believe it or not, it's true. Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Christopher on January 09, 2006, 10:57 AM How about mic wise?

www.garageband.com/artist/dahlgrenprophecy or www.myspace.com/dahlgrenprophecy Here's a song I did with my old band, it got some heavy local radio play: http://www.rev9music.com/mp3s/rev9_seraphimsong.mp3 As you can tell, one is heavier than the other, I went back to my roots and went as heavy as I could :) Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: chefdoug on January 09, 2006, 04:13 PM Ok, I recently created a myspace site just to post songs and clips, so here you are.
www.myspace.com/inertia123 the first song was a recording of a band rehearsal, it's a song we wrote a few years ago and we were teaching it a new bass player. the recording was done in my basement, using no mics(except vocal). everything was in a small Mackie mixer direct, so yes, these are my home made EDrums on this recording. This is a very rough recording, but it's the only one I have right now of this song, this is my favorite song my band has written. The second track is my little experiment. This is me playing my acoustic kit using 5 mics, a little mixer and Acid 3.0. This is also me playing my new Hamer bass through a Line 6 Bass Pod, both of which I got about a week ago. I haven't played bass in about 7 or 8 years so forgive the shoddy playing, the drumming is not with out it's mistakes either. this is simply a rough recording of the drums and bass to another one of my bands songs. The idea is fo me to do drums and bass and then send the stuff to my guitarist to do the rest. Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Good vocals, sounds really familiar? Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: LuvmyLeedy on January 12, 2006, 01:30 AM i did this messing about in my home studio about a year and a half ago using reason and then playing along with it. it was more an exersice in the process than anything else..
untitled snippet no.6 (http://modena.intergate.ca/personal/cml/sounds/untitled06-short.MP3) this is the demo one of the bands i play in finished a few months ago. indie rock. we're planning on hitting the studio to do our debut album next month. Ghettoblaster. (http://www.ghettoblaster.ca) here's a track from another group i was playing with. it gave me a chance to play really quietly which i quite enjoy. lazy river. (http://modena.intergate.ca/personal/cml/sounds/lazy.mp3) Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: rev9drummer on January 12, 2006, 09:34 AM Hmmm... Good vocals, sounds really familiar? If your reffering to Rev.9, yes he is a phenominal vocalist, very wide range. I quit that band for the simple fact I was driving to another state for practice, and touring every weekend and not making money. We had a good fan base from South Carolina up to New York on the east coast, so that may be why it sounds familiar. We got heavy rotation on the metal station in New York, as well as locally here in DC/Maryland/VA area on DC101. They got a new drummer who is a great drummer and a friend of mine and are still going. They are recording some new stuff right now. If you were refering to my new band, unfortunatly he isn't in the band anymore, he had to move to Cali for a job. We got a new guy who has a broder range and is a good songwriter himself, so he has been able to bring a little more to the plate. Our new stuff is even heavier than the old stuff, lol. Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: drumnut1 on January 12, 2006, 04:16 PM I think that all of you are great. Different styles and different music tastes. I really like Felix's first song on this thread. Kind of like what I am into these days.
I haven't been on this site long but I have been working all day on a solo with a 4 track digital recorder and two mic's in The Nutty Drummer's Cave. I am going to put it on the web site I am building. I will post the link on here. So many good drummers. This is not going to be as good Q as some of you have displayed as far as recording. Maybe I should put a song on there that is studio? OK I will. Was great to hear your all's music. That is how we talk in KY. Sorry!!! Nutty Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: felix on January 13, 2006, 08:04 AM Thanks Nutty for the kind words on my work. I for one am really glad you are here.
No one will ever bag on you for being cool and posting sound files or images that are positive and from an honest place. The guerrilla recordings are best that everyone submits and I'm sure yours are going to be just stellar!!!! Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: drumnut1 on January 13, 2006, 08:14 PM Hey Felix,
I have an IT guy putting my web site together. Explain to me about these type of recordings and how do I put my stuff on here? When I got on this web site I contacted Bart to see how to import a wave file to the picture spot. He told me it wasn't capable of that yet, so I started to open a free web site. If you go to my page and click on The Nutty Drummer it will take you to a web page that I started. If you click on the red block that say's add photo, a pic of me doing a two class 25 year reunion is in there. The free site wasn't able to do enough, so I am doing a real nice site now. I hope that I haven't said anything wrong here? Yesterday I wrote a message and now Mr. A's Pic is here twice. I listened to all the material that was here and I never said a negative word about any of it in fact, I enjoyed most of it. I just singled your stuff out because it really reminds me of some of the styles that I am working on. I am playing with a group on Sunday night that play's mostly Joe Satriani and My friends originals. That beat you were playing reminded me of some of the Satriani stuff that I am doing. Rubina, Cryin', Crush of Love, Hordes Of Locust, Always with Me Always with you, and Echo which is 4/5 time. The Quality of your material sounded like it was recorded in a real good studio. Was it a home recording or done some where else? Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: drumnut1 on January 17, 2006, 04:05 PM Hey Felix,
I E-mailed you a sample of something I put together last Thursday. Don't think it is ready for a web site yet but I thought I would share it with a few of you to get some feedback. I don't have my web site ready yet so I don't have a way to provide a link to anything yet. This formate is about 3 meg and it is about 3min and 48 seconds long. Nutty Title: Let's Hear You Play ... I guarantee we had slower dial-up than anyone else on this board, and now I can actually download stuff--and it takes seconds!
*whew* Christopher, your rendition of "Landslide" was really nice--a big improvement, I think on FM's drumless original. And Leedy, you're right--your kit sounds phenomenal, esp. the toms. I really liked your little "snippet." Thanks everyone for sharing! I'm in cyber-heaven! ;D robyn Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: thebrentflood on January 20, 2006, 06:32 PM I've been wanting to reply to this post for ages. My band The Brent Flood is from Ireland and we're now based in London. We play a kind of guitar based indie rock and we've just recorded a demo this week and here are two of the tracks:
http://www.thebrentflood.co.uk/The_Brent_Flood_-_A_Jolly_Good_Rant.mp3 (http://www.thebrentflood.co.uk/The_Brent_Flood_-_A_Jolly_Good_Rant.mp3) http://www.thebrentflood.co.uk/The_Brent_Flood_-_Jethros_Baby.mp3 (http://www.thebrentflood.co.uk/The_Brent_Flood_-_Jethros_Baby.mp3) I've been playing for a few years but only started to take my drumming seriously round about last summer. I think it's a little bit scrappy but I think it's the first time we've gelled on a recording as a band. I'd love to know what anyone thinks! ;D Thanks, Chris Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Here's a quick clip of me hastily sitting at the get-up I posted in the "Show Your Kits" thread. The idea is to highlight the bass drum, a 14 x 5". The snare is 3 x 13", the cymbal an 18" thin crash. I like when you groove with both brushes on the snare. I have to say it is so worlds apart from my style and sound that all I can say is "cool" Get some of that Clayton Cameron crap happening man. thats my old band, i quit about 2 months ago due to the fact that they were dicks, and just got worse. but my drumming you can hear best on "natural disaster" and "your so going to hell" lemme know what you think. also, the other two songs for the full length were recorded in july, and natural and hell were recorded in december of 04. i had an accident on tour where i tore my calf muscles, so some of the db i am working on getting back, and improving, i really messed up my legs and technique. but through that it made me realize a lot of things i had missed and not studied, so all in all ,even though it seems like i took two steps back, it will help. anyway. yeah. Post by: Joe on February 07, 2006, 01:36 PM In the beginning, I can hear the greetings to Bailey and Guaraldi: " 'Evening, Vince, Colin. A pleasure to see you." The precocious, youthful snare drum is bouncing around in the middle of such a dignified meeting: "I can be a cymbal too!". Everyone looks on and claps, though not insincerely as you would a friend's untalented nephew, for it is talented and thus the clapping sincere.
Then we have the whistling synth. What is that whistling synth? I must know. Then we meet the substance of the tune, a relaxing, calming groove that, while melodic and exciting in portions, is respectful to the listener. The piano's chords and arpeggios are lush, spaced, and considerate. The electric bass doesn't whine. The bass drum, while demonstrating a deep thump, still presents a vestige of its high-pitched bop predecessorâ€â€as sure as someone's daughter has their parent's nose. A very good record. Good for a double-listen in my case, as we speak. Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: AutoCrat on February 12, 2006, 09:37 PM Here's something I want you to hear and to tell me if you like it.

Actually, after we recorded the song, we realized it is "borrowed" from "insignificance" on Binaural (2000) from Pearl Jam, a little time before Trapt, but, yes, very similar. I just went to Kevin's profile page and, is this right? 15 years old??!!! Man, Very impressive for 15?? Keep it going Kevin, You have the makings of a great drummer. I do an open mic night everyonce and awhile and you are better than most of those drummers and they have been playing for years. All these people are right, there are good bands that are out there that would think of you as a great catch. Piratepig, Take it easy on the ice cream, Man, it won't make you feel any better. I played everything, and used a single room mic for the drums. I also didnt use a bass, I played the bass line on the E string of my guitar and pitched it down an octive. Keep it gentle, I'm 15 and recorded this in my living room, haha. Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Pirate Pig on February 27, 2006, 09:15 PM I guess its my turn to post, i can't say im super proud of this. I had a camera checked out from school for a project and thought it would be a good opportunity to record me playing drums just to see my major faults. I found two grooves i thought up while jaming and thought i'd post them up. These are the type of grooves i really love playing, there not rock solid and theres a glitch in the tape that caused the sound to break out. Also the sound is low quality since it was recorded with one dynamic mic sitting on the ground. With all this said i'm open for some constructive criticism.

Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: robyn on February 28, 2006, 12:44 AM That's nice, Nick. Were you playing a cymbal bell at the beginning or a cowbell? The only suggestion I can make, IM(very)HO, is to watch your tempo. Maybe practice regularly w/ a click?
robyn Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Pirate Pig on February 28, 2006, 12:51 AM Thanks, yah its an LP salsa cowbel (the larger one). I hear you on the tempo its very unstead. I'm sure part of the unsteady feeling is based on the fact that i was just jamming out and this came to my head so this is the first time i've ever played this but i do plan on playing it to a click next time and perfecting it. I'd really like to hear everyones input.

Again, it is live!!! You can tell you didn't really rehearse a drum solo! Just a beat. It is fine!!! Nutty Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Pirate Pig on February 28, 2006, 04:30 AM Coo, im going to work on it with a click track. Working on throwing the down beat onto toms ala gadd and keep that flowing groove ala steve jordan. I'll record it better this week maybe and repost it.

I agree with nutty, in a live situation with nothing else going on, it is easy to pick apart a drum track...that is how I felt just listening to my drum track w/o other tracks!
If I had to be specific, the hi-hat wasn't as consistant as it could have been, of course, this is coming from someone who doesn't keep time with the hi-hat (something I'm working on), so take that for what it is worth! I think this is very nice of you to pay me that complement. I really have no idea technically about what I am doing! But I like to play technical music and I play by feel. I talked to Ranman, (Randy) tonight for about an hour and he plays a different style than I do and I think I learned somethings with this conversation with him. I now know how uneducated I am on a drum set!!!I have been playing with bands since the mid 70's but I really don't technically know what I am doing. I just play by feel and I learn by listening and playing with it. I take great pride in trying to pull it off as close to the song that I am playing. Vocally speaking also! It all about having fun to me!!Thanks again Ryno, I enjoyed talking to you!!! Nutty Title: Re:Let's Hear You Play ... A set of Roto Toms that are 30 years old and a cow bell, set of Chimes, Wood block, and a Tambereen that mounts on the Hi hat and I invented a marocca that mounts on a Hi Hat too. Thanks man!!!!!
If you were wondering how you would have found the drum solo, I will bet that no one else here will spend the time listening to it either!!! Oh well, thank you for listening. Ryno, I hope your gig went well tonight? I have to work every other week so, I am out of commission 50% of the time, but It does give me time to practice when no one else is home!!!! here's my band, http://www.myspace.com/galoremusic I'm playing a 1971 set of white marine pearl ludwigs, 22,13,16, recently I picked up an early 50s (I think) WFL 26" bass drum that's also white marine pearl, thin mahogany shell, nickel lugs that I spent many hours cleaning the rust off of, it's the sweetest sounding bass drum I've ever heard. Spent many years in the back of a van in Canada and the US. Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Apollo on March 15, 2006, 02:42 PM I guess this is OK? Nutty That snare sound is gorgeous! What snare do you have and how did you get it to sound that good???? Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: drumnut1 on March 15, 2006, 08:54 PM Hi Apollo.
Thank you very much for the complement. I am glad you enjoyed it!!! The answer to your question: " That snare sound is gorgeous! What snare do you have and how did you get it to sound that good????". My snare is the snare that came with my Tama Star Classic maple shell kit. Just a standard 5 1/2 by 14 maple snare drum The snare it self is what came stock, and the bottom resonant head is the stock Tama head made by Evans. The top head that you hear is a Remo Fiberskyn3. I had only had this head for about one week before I recorded the solo. I do a few things for mildly muffling it but you can over do this like anything else. No need for big pieces of duct tape or anything like that. I take a very thin piece of cloth about 3 in. wide and stretch it under the middle of the top head and then tighten and tune. No other muffling should be needed unless you want to cut your volume and tone. A Zero O-ring works OK and I have heard of some kind of jell like gupe you can use. All I am using is a thin piece of cloth. This is what you hear. You can spend some time with tuning to your desired taste but I like to have my bottom head the same as my top head on the snare and medium to tight. I want good bounce. I have seen people put a cloth on top in the studio but I don't. This is all a matter of what sound you like and are looking for. I have had drummers come up and say the same thing you did and they want to start looking the snare over real well to find out what I have done and I have had drummers ask me if I really liked that sound, like they really didn't. I don't like the sound of a metal snare? I have always been a big fan of wood snares. Even more so now that I have had this one. Apollo, thank you for asking and I hope I have helped? Thanks Again, Nutty Title: Let's Hear You Play ... Post by: Louderdb on March 16, 2006, 11:55 AM Hey Hurk! I listened to you sample on your website. All were good, but "FLOOD" is my favorite! I will get more information for you on the exact software!! My bass player is an engineer. He is really intelligent. He never comes to practice, or a show with out his sound meter. I really like the band to sound balanced. The mix is really important and if the band has been together long enough, things seem to fall in place. We are working on 4 years now and there is nothing we really sound bad on!!! We use 2 mic's that record in a heart shaped pattern. We have a very padded room. My basement!! Jerry has a computer that is deticated to only recording!!! Seems to be doing a good job? That is it, Nutty Title: Let's Hear You Play ... I'm a noob on the forum, so hello. :)
I have a sort-of-solo I did and converted it into mp3 format. But before i post the link I'd like to clarify it a bit... My father is an old-school drummer from the 60's and 70's. He used ur basic Ludwig kit with the red sparkly colors. So one evening he and I were talkin' drums and I told him he should check out a double-kick sometime just for fun. We went on about it for several minutes and he ended up saying "any drummer with a 'good foot' can do that stuff with one foot". Of course I had to laugh at that and thought to myself...I'll show you! ...So being that we lived in different states, I went into the little studio where my drums were set up and just threw some stuff together. The purpose was to prove him wrong with a double-pedal. heh So anyway...It may sound a bit heavy metal-ish, but i actually prefer to play r&b/funky/latin type stuff. The recording is a bit bassy....so you may want to lower your bass. Hope you like. :D http://www.irgraphics.net/download/mysolo.zip (http://www.irgraphics.net/download/mysolo.zip) Title: Let's Hear or See You Play ... Post by: TheBeachBoy on April 11, 2006, 09:49 PM I set up a myspace page just for this (well, I've been meaning to set one up for awhile)
www.myspace.com/disciplesofbrian (http://www.myspace.com/disciplesofbrian) "Dead Flowers" is the Rolling Stones song that I recorded for a friend that wants to cover it. The timing is ever-so-slightly off because that's how the original was. The other songs on there don't have drumming: "You Still Believe In Me" is a Beach Boys song I recorded. That's me on the percussion, what little it does have. Actually, other than vocals and the MIDI horns, I played all the instruments. "In My Childhood" is a song I composed inspired by "Pet Sounds." All MIDI, so no parts were done by me. And here's my band, The Fondells: www.myspace.com/thefondells (http://www.myspace.com/thefondells) We recorded the first 3 at our singer's house, the last at mine. Nutty Title: Let's Hear or See You Play ... Post by: onuspro on April 15, 2006, 11:40 AM Hello my drumming brothers and sisters. First post to this board. A little about me: I have been playing for 17 years, completely self-taught, never had a lesson, which I regret to this day. Everything I play I've learned by repetitive listening and imitation. My technique is not "proper", it's whatever is comfortable to me. I'm a leftie player on a righty kit, I play open-handed, which means I lead with my left hand. My main kit is a 12 year old 8-piece Artstar, which I still love and will never get rid of. Influences include Portnoy, Paul, Lombardo, Van Halen, Bonham, just to name a few.
Anyhoo, the only video of me is with the band at a recent gig. The quality is crappy to put it mildly, but hey, it's better than nothing. http://www.myspace.com/greymattermetal Title: Let's Hear or See You Play ... You can't hear me playing congas on FM (that's somebody else on the tambourine on that song) - in fact, you can't really hear the congas even on "Do It Again" due to the not-too-great live recording setup we had but, I'm on all the songs - on congas, tambourine, Roland SPD-S (love the handclaps on it!), bell tree, and cowbell. You can actually hear the percussion parts played by one of our singers (who I am teaching) better than mine. ;) I'll try to get better recordings up soon. This is a FUN band to play with! This is my Cinco de Mayo show in Hollywood with WHIPLADS. We've done live streaming simulcasts before (viewable for a fee), but this is the first time I've seen it where they put it up and leave it for viewing later AT NO CHARGE. Anyway, I wanted to post it up this one time. This club is called THE GIG and is located in Hollywood, CA. They've come a long way since we first played there about 7 years ago and have become very high-tech. Check these 2 demo tracks at the bottom of my new webpage. www.daniel.roldan.tripod.com (http://www.daniel.roldan.tripod.com) Two very different projects. In Astacio I'm on drums, while with Blokoto I'm doing all the percussion (at once - like on a live show). By the way, the Blokoto track was a one-take recording - everybody at the sametime in different rooms. The drummer and I where together. Bart & James: Blokoto is the Afro-Caribbean group I've talking since I joined the Cafe. Title: Let's Hear or See You Play ... Post by: dannydrumperc on May 16, 2006, 08:03 AM Changed the Blokoto track for one with more percussion work. In this one I'm playing conga with a bare left hand and a VF Bashiri Johnson mallet on my right hand, so I could play blocks, cowbells and timbales as well - another mallet left over the timbales for quick pick-up. The riding cowbell on the choruses was mounted on a pedal (played with my right foot).
These recordings captured the sound (and errors ;D) of our live performances because they were recorded only once; no overdubing (except for vocals) or copy/paste here. Title: Re:Let's Hear or See You Play ... Post by: Jwoo10 on May 18, 2006, 12:09 PM I have tons of tracks that are in the work's and some that are complete. I collaborate via the internet (tracking my drums in my small home studio)... I use a Tama OLD Swingstar set.. Use Cubase SX and 7 mic's to record. I have an M-Audio Delta 1010LT sound card and exchange files with folks from all over the world (wav's or ape files) have tracked 3 complete cd's (of which 2 are in for master mixing stages) and one is done... I'm self taught, can't read charts *(SADLY) never took lessons. BUT by the grace of God I've been blessed with an ability to keep time fairly good.. You tell me hey?
you can hear snippettes of my work at www.myspace.com/jwoo10 or www.jwoo10.com Here's a Quick link to one I've finished recently.. this vocalist is 16 years old and she's JUST been signed with Sony. This is the first time I ever recorded myself on drums, and all I used was a single overhead mike into my PC. I'm basically just keeping time to a bass track with a few fills, and no solo. Post by: Louderdb on May 30, 2006, 01:01 PM This past Memorial Day weekend, we joined forces with another band and had one heck of a party out on the Tennessee River! The drummer for the other band is also the "Tech Savvy" sound guy for his band like I am for mine. So we both ended up mixing for each other's band! :P I'm not sure what the guitar players did during their "free time" LOL But fun was had by all and the owner and employees were ecstatic about the turn out and the performances! Both band shared gear. My drums and our PA. Plus our bass rig and guitar amp. Because they had 5 members and we're just 3 pieces, the keys and another guitar rig were supplied by themselves. We have another similar date with them in June. On that gig THEY will provide PA and backline. It's turned out to be a very nice partnership.
Mind you, we've known these guys for YEARS and loaning our gear out to just anyone is not something we'd normally consider. In this case however, the guys of Prowler are some very good and dear friends! ;) Here's me being the "twist master" (http://fisherdale.com/images/May20_05/S_gregg1.JPG) I had the PA all the way up to 11! Yes it goes that high! It's MACKIE! Bands named Dark Asylum..consists of me, my good buddies Kevin, and Ben. It's really metal but...listen to Authoritative Dissonance. I have a cool fill around 4:00 minutes into the song it's got an awesome phazer effect but it's hard to hear unless you got headphones on, and if you listen close I screw up around 3:48 its a triplet pickup on the bass then a snare but I did it a beat early so i put another snare hit in there. lol Title: Re: Let's Hear or See You Play ... Hi Nutty. There is a guy in town here that sings Led Zep and plays the drums at the same time. He's really good at it also. I don't know how you guys do it. Thanks Felix, You have to just have a great love for Led Zeppelin and practice a bunch. All of it is not doable because of Bonham's timing and sometimes Plant sang opposite the beat. I feel like I can do a decent job of both, but together, you have to pick your songs. I have done Ramble On, Thank you, Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Ten Years Gone and Rockin Roll and will try anything that a band wants to try but I am not ashamed to say it is not doable. Robert Plant and John Bonham are hard to do right but I love it when it can be close. Nutty Title: Re: Let's Hear or See You Play ...
