Thanks for sharing this. and yes he can Absolutely groove!  I'm not real familiar with his work but the few things I've seen make me want to get his dvd or some of his cds.  So many things to learn, so little time!

He's got a really nice combination of chops & a funky groove.  Most of what I've heard from him has been with Galactic.  Their live disc from a few years back (We Love 'em Tonight) gives a really good example of live New Orleans music.
Heck, thanks to Stanton, I now know what a pandeiro is!
(though I probably don't know how to spell it...)

I saw him at the Modern Drummer Festival about 5 years ago.  Caught some of Galactic at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in 2004.   Yep, he can groove BIG TIME.  Had a very cool set, including an old circus bass drum.  He can play some very tasty stuff.  I've got a copy of "Crazy Horse Mongoose" by Galactic, if you don't have it and you want to groove big time, pick it up.  It's my only Stanton Moore CD, I'd like to pick up at least one more, he has a number of different projects working at any given time including Garage A Trois.

when i hear sprung w/ galactic, it sounds ok.

but with the great george porter on bass, and dirty dozen brass band blowin' (who have their own KILLIN' drmr, Terry Higgins), the song just COMES ALIVE.

btw, i hate how they dont have the panderio up enough in the mix.  even on the DVD, the fun patterns played on it get sorta lost w/ the bass drum. :(

still i love watching stanton slam the freak outta that auxillary marching bass drum of his. looks like its gonna fly off its stand at any moment.  8)

Yeah man, I just saw Galactic at the Anaheim House of Blues a couple of weeks ago.  Everytime Stanton layed into his 26" kik drum, it rocked back and forth in time (well of course it did, what else would it do? :)), but since it is a remote kik drum, kind of out by itself in relation to the rest of the kit, it lent a really cool visual aspect to the stage.

I know what you're saying jokerjkny, his panderio is never hot enough in the mix for me.  I've seen Stanton play about 4 or 5 times and I am always dissapointed in the panderio mix.

Anyway, the man can lay it down like nobody's business.
