hello

i was just wondering, do starter of beginner kits allow you to drum as fast as pro or semi-pro kits, i've seen lots of sites on the internet advertising "great kit to get you started" and such like, i know that the sound will not be as goood as other kits, but will people really notice??

i'm not sure what you mean by "fast". If you are speaking of speed in rolls and fills, that is all determined by hand speed, not the kit. The speed comes from practice (hours and hours).

any kit can work, get decent heads and cymbals.

DrumDude +1, A great kit can't make a beginner good, but but a good drummer can make lousy kit sound pretty good. The kit you see in my avitar is the lowest on the totem pole that Pacific makes, with two add on toms that are by infinity, which I never heard of. But the heads are all Evans Glass Hydraulic, the hi-hats and cymbals are Zildjian and Sabian. I only have $900 in it including the Pork Pie Snare, rack system, after market heads, and Ahead drumsticks to play them with. For the base set of 5 pieces with a Zildjian low end ZBT cymbal pack you can have it to your door for $549 including shipping.

Buying "beginner" sets are kind of a double edged sword. You dump money into a cheap set to make it better. Then if you decide to quit and drumming isn't for you they're hard to get anyone to buy them. If you invest in an intermediate set you can recoup a fair portion of your money back. Or if you decide you "love playing drums" then you can continue to play without feeling you need a new set to get better. I don't know how many times I've seen that cycle of events.... That's a tuff call for new drummers.  ;)

Good point there, Chip. Here's what I'm going to do w/ my beginner kit, tho--already talked w/ my drum instructor, and he's seen/played/helped tune my kit. He said he'd be happy to recommend it to a new student who needs a kit. I get it sold, someone gets a decent starter kit for a good price. Everyone's happy.
