Hey Guys,
Let me introduce myself.  My name is Jennifer and I live in the great city of Dallas TX.
I am a 38 year-old mother of three whom I school during the day and teach martial arts at night.
My husband is a guitar/vocals guy with a studio in our home.  I just started playing drums about six months ago to help out the guys with some basic tracks and working out songs.
What started out as a way to help immediately turned into a passion.  Hitting things that don't move is a new concept.
I am thrilled to find this site with concrete information.  EVERY drummer I asked basic questions just looked at their feet and mumbled something about personal preference.
I am looking forward to learning as much as I can from you guys.  No mumbling!  Just kidding.  I figure it has to be a drummer thing.
Jennifer

my name's Matthew, I'm 17, and I've played drums for about 11 years. I've been in a band with my brother and a friend for about 3 years. We mostly just play to jam, and enjoy the music...it may not be the funnest to listen to. We play alot of different stuff, inlcuding more oldschool rock, as well as modern rock stuff, and quieter acoustic stuff. We really enjoy just jamming on a song idea for 20 minutes or so, although we've condensed some stuff into shorter songs with vocals.

Hello All,

I've been floating around in the background on a daily basis since September of last year, which is about the same time I started learning the drums. I have always wanted to play the drums and it feels great to be on the road to enlightenment.

I posted a few messages for the first time the other day. There has been no real need to ask anything so far as I've found most answers to my questions in the wealth of information contained in these forums (and the remainder on the Vic Firth site).

I'm currently working my way through Mark Wessels's A Fresh Start to the Snare Drum and Carmine Appice's Ultimate Realistic Rock. I practice on a RealFeel pad at home and rent a kit (Yamaha Oak Custom) for a few hours a week.

I'm 29 years old (never too late to start!) and currently work as a technical translator (Japanese to English) in Yokohama, Japan. I live in an old Japanese house and have a fibre optic internet connection - but no running hot water. Love that. I like taking photos too.

Greetings and I'll see you around.

SDPU

Hello, I've been browsing these forums for quite some time. I had an account, but I completely forgot everything about it. I came back to these forums and tried to search for something, but alas you need to be logged in to do that. My old account was pretty much busted (the password recovering didn't work for me), so I "re-birthed" myself here in a new account.

Anyway about me, I'm currently a high school junior in the northern Virginia area. I've been playing drums since middle school, and been in school jazz bands since 8th grade. I have a very light touch and wouldn't mind playing below 6 in. off the head all the time. Unfortunately for me, my drum instructor says otherwise.  ;D My current set consists of a Ludwig hammered bronze snare... and thats it. One day I might raise enough funds (and make up my mind) to get me a nice bass and cymbals to go along with it. Till then I practice on my Gibraltar pad set.

Well hopefully you can get a summer job to raise enough money for a set of good drums, cymbals, and cases. I have also found that begging the relatives works real good at your age........... Awesome snare, BTW

Would love to network with other Christian drummers too to get their experiences of drumming in church and stuff.

A tardy hello.
I'm an American AND Portuguese living in Lisbon, Portugal. I took classes for 7 months a few years ago while living in Pittsburgh and now own what might as well be called a practice pad set and will more or less weekly play at a rented cheap studio.
18 years old, and although I do not act like it, every day that passes by without me trying to improve my drumming makes me sort of panic. I'm going to college and although extensively inexperienced compared to many a gentleman I am very passionate about percussion. I am trying to restart lessons, in order to achieve better technique and expand out of basic styles. As you might see, I'm looking to get a semi-pro kit, and hope to find soon where to use it on a practice basis.

I have a 5 man band with my best friends (tentatively/heroically called [the] Rubber Duckies), but things have not been productive at all, mainly due to our student lives. And stuff.

I hope to learn. I have learned a lot recently already from this cafe.

Post by: ls1jay on March 06, 2007, 08:02 PM
Hey guys...

New guy here! I just thought I'd say hi. I've been playing for 30 yrs and have pretty much played it all (music wise). I guess at heart, I'm more of a hard rock/metal drummer in reality. I'm hoping this is a more mature forum than the one I just left. I won't say which one, but it was one of those... well, this brand is best... and your set up has to be like this... and so forth... Anyone know what I mean? Seemed like a bunch of spoiled kids with high dollar kits and 80% couldn't play good enough to justify their kits!

Anyway, enough of that. I'll post a couple links to pics of my kit just in case anyone is interested: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v80/JayinFlorida/DSCF5686.jpg

Welcome Joe and Jay!

Joe, I vaguely remember some friends in high school liking your band. Or at least, I recall the band name sketched into their notebooks, right next to Ozzy, Metallica, and other bands of the day.

I was, of course, the only drummer in my high school who had a picture of Steve Gadd sitting behind his Yammies stuck in the slot of my Trapper Keeper, but I was the oddball single pedal player and the only drummer with short hair.

Hello!

It's nice to know that someone remembers us "Old Timers"!

We probably know many of the same people.

Rhode Island is such a tight knit community.

Yes, I worked at the "Ricks Music World" under the great Doug Kelley, for a couple of years in the early 90's.

It always amazes me how time passes so quickly!

What are you up to these days?

Hi! I joined today, and I like it here. I'm also a member at the Pearl forums. I have been playing for 4 years and a member of my High School Drumline!!! Also a member of the school's symphonic wind ensemble (class AA) and percussion ensemble(class A). Our percussion ensemble recieved a 1 at contest (best score) and we are traveling to a national competition at the end of the month.
Although I played cymbals this year on drumline, as a result of missing tryouts and the first week of band, I am extremely motivated to make snare next year and continue on my quest to become a snare player at the university i hope to attend.
Guess that's it!!

Hey, I'm Chris. I've been fumbling around with drums for about 15mos. I am a songwriter with a small home studio and started playing drums to add some live percussion to my recordings. I think I found this site searching for info on the Remo Suede heads, which seem to be popular among some members here. So far, I've just been searching the archives -- seems like some friendly, knowledgeable folks around here.

My meager setup:
Gretsch Blackhawk EX Fusion in White Diamond & Gibraltar Hardware
Remo Suede, Renaissance, and Fiberskyn heads
Zildjian 13" K Custom Dark Hats, 16" K Custom Session Crash, 18" A Custom Fast Crash, 20" K Custom Dry Ride
Wuhan 12" China
Vic Firth SD4 Combo sticks, amongst others
Pearl Roadster D-2000 throne
accessory Ludwig 13" Piccolo Snare with Evans Strata 700 head/Hazy 300 SS

Hi folks..my name is Kat.  I've drummed my entire life.  I eat, sleep, breathe, and talk about drums and drumming most of the time.  I've been dubbed a "drum geek" and I'm not going to argue with that.  I don't have a huge collection of drums, but I have enough equipment to get the job done. I teach when I have a spare moment.  I've worked for a custom drum builder before so, I have knowledge of the building process etc.  I am just happy to be accepted by the drumming community as a female performer, singer and drummer.  It's been a long road and I've never given up.  I've been influenced by every drummer I've ever heard, but my all time favorite drummer is Bun E. Carlos.  Everyone has a fav.!  ;) ~Rock on~ Kat

Hi Kat.  Welcome to The Cafe!!  You should feel right at home here as many of us share your pasion for drums.  What experiences did you gain from working at the custom drum building shop?  I'm always interested in that subject.  Did you get a chance to hear the differences between various cuts of bearing edges?

I discovered that drum buliding isn't at all intimidating.  I've always done my own maintainance, upkeep on my kits.  I am mechanically inclined for a "girl" I never had the bucks to have someone else do it, so I learned kit upkeep really quick.  A few kits I had as a kid were disasters, so it was a challenge to keep them standing!!!

I was hired as a teacher for the house studio and I got to hang out in the builder's bay. I ordered my own kit and got to help out with assembly, wrapping, etc.  They were good to me and I learned a lot.

I don't have a zen answer about bearing edges, but I've found that a sharper edge can make the drum hard to tune.  A rounded edge will save wear and tear on heads..etc.  My Big Brew custom has a fairly deep edge and it is a really deep-toned kit.  The guy who designed my kit said he put some"English" on my bearing edges...so, he must have tweeked them to his personal standards.  They are Keller maple shells so, if you're familiar with Keller....~ Kat

Kat - that's cool that you got to help in the assembly process.  Yes, I'm familar with Keller shells... my kit was also made with those, but I didn't get to help build it like you!!!  That kinda gives you a special appreciation for your drums, huh?

Hey.. My names Mikhail and I've been browsing the forum for a while, but just now decided to post.  I'm 16 and I've been drumming since I was 10 or so in school band.  I didn't start drumming on a set until July 2006. Doing school band helped me tons, since I started set already knowing how to count, hold a decent beat, and read music/tabs. I'm not very good, but I'm trying.  I always wanted to drum on a set, but never had enough money.  One day my friend told me his brother was selling his set for $100, so I went and checked it out.  It was just a cheap eBay set really, probably $200 or so on eBay if I were to look it up.  It included the basics: snare, bass, 2 rack toms, floor tom and a crash/ride and hi-hats.  I went for it and bought it and started messing around a bit.  My friends decided they wanted to start a punk band, so I joined up with them, and it's been going great.  With a few shows we've been playing I managed to do quite a bit with the set.  I managed to replace all of the heads with Evans and take out all the cheap-o cymbals and bought a set of name brand cheap-o cymbals, the Zildjian ZBTs.  They're not bad.. can't complain for the price. I messed around with my setup a bit and wound up taking out one rack tom and putting the other on a snare stand.  I like the setup quite a bit.  That's about it.. Probably more than any of you ever needed to know about me, but oh well.

Pictures of my set:

I am nine years old, Have a new pair of drumsticks, Always wanted to be a drummer.  My mom says I need to get an electronic drum set since where we live we can't have a normal set, but they are expensive so she bought me a pair of drum sticks and told me to practice drumming on everything in the house with them first and then if I still like drumming she'll try to buy me an electronic set.  I just wanted to say hello and to ask you what is the best way to start to be a drummer?? :D

Hi Gabi and welcome to Drummer Cafe!

Number 1....YOU KEEP DREAMIN!!!!  Everything else will work itself out in due time.

I started drumming when I was 7.  My Dad knew it was time to get me my first drumset when he came home from work one day and there were little drum stick dents on our stove top...LOL

Electronic kits are expensive and may not make the best beginner kit, although it is difficult if you live in an apartment etc.  Make sure to get a good practice pad and find a good teacher.  Do you have band at school?  At your private lessons and at your school band rehearsal you don't have to worry about how much noise you make!

Good luck to you

Hannah

Hi Gabi!

Welcome to the Cafe!  I'll second Hannah's comments...  keep up your desire to play and it WILL work itself out in time.  Her advice about school bands and private lessons is golden...  ;D

My daughter is 8 and enjoys playing my drums from time to time, although not seriously.  We're lucky enough to live in a place where noise isn't really an issue.  However, when I was young (about your age) and practicing at home, it was not uncommon for the neighbors to call the police on me!  I made it a point to seek those neighbors out and ask them when some appropriate times would be for me to practice.  It wasn't ideal, but I was able to work out a reasonable practice schedule (on real drums) that accommodated the neighbors.  The rest of my practice time was spent on pads and such, where noise wasn't a factor.  Good luck!

BTW, you have an extremely mature style of writing for a 9 year old!  I'm guessing that you do very well in school!

Welcome again!

My name is Sara, I'm 22 and have been playing for a couple years now.  I have a LOT to learn and this looks like the place to be.  I recently bought a Mapex M Birch studio kit in black forest green and LOVE it.  I have a pork pie snare, zildjian, sabian and meinl cymbals, (I'm liking my meinls a lot) and axis pedals.  (pics to come someday)  My BF (boyfriend) plays guitar and we try to write music together.  I also play bass, but drums are my new passion in life.  Welp, thanks for reading. :)

Welcome Sara!!  You came to the perfect place to learn a lot of great stuff!!!

Hi all,
I just discovered this awesome forum and am looking forward to sharing and recieving as much new information as possible. I am 25 years old and live in southern Utah. I am not mormon, And have been playing my 4pc Premier Signia Maple kit for about 13 years. I have played with many local bands and am now trying to get in with the worship team at my church. I thank God everyday for the talent he has blessed me with. Some of my favorite drummers are Stewart Copland, Ryan Rhapsys, Billy Ward, Nathan Richarson, Steve Gadd and Steve Smith. I'm not real big on the double bass, I have a 9002 double pedal but rarley use it. I play a Zildjian set-up consisting of a pair of 14 special dark K hi-hats that I absolutly love, a 18" A custom fast crash, and a 21" sweet ride that I think is the most versitile ride cymbal that Zildjian makes. Anyway if you have actually read all of this, thanks.  ;D

Hey there my name is Nathan and i'm from Louisiana.  I'm 46yoa and having been playing drums on and off since i was 10.  Currently i'm playing in a southern gospel group that plays around at different churchs.  Last year i purchased a nesting kit from the Modern Drum Shop and they are very nice.  The sound is very good for such a small kit.  Just found the cafe a couple of weeks ago.  I did not know such a place as this existed on the internet. Very nice.  There is a lot of good info here.

My name is Austin Case , and I've been taking drum lessons from Todd Norris, A.K.A:Drums4jc, for about three years now. I just turned 13 a week ago.I couldn't ask for a better instrument to play and I'd like to hear from you guys!

Hi, Austin. Welcome to the forum! I hope you have a good time here. Every time I go to Sam Ash, I always want to play the drums, next to the guitars and pianos. Well, you come to the right place. BTW, Happy birthday.

Sincerely,
Sophie

Hey there my name is Nathan and i'm from Louisiana.  I'm 46yoa and having been playing drums on and off since i was 10.  Currently i'm playing in a southern gospel group that plays around at different churchs.  Last year i purchased a nesting kit from the Modern Drum Shop and they are very nice.  The sound is very good for such a small kit.  Just found the cafe a couple of weeks ago.  I did not know such a place as this existed on the internet. Very nice.  There is a lot of good info here.

Hi, Nathan. Welcome to the forum!
Sophie.

This is actually my second time around (... I have the shirts to prove it!)...I got sidetracked with other things and well, let's just say I "expired"  ;)

Anyway, my real name is "Anthony"; Mongrel is an old online-gaming nickname that, well...just 'is'...

Started playing about two months after my 14th birthday and a month after my parents divorced.  Spent 5 years playing trumpet as a frustrated drummer prior to that.  Bought a bunch of odd-ball pieces off of a kid down the street for $30 bucks and used an old potato chip can as a bass drum.  In June of '77 I talked my father into buying me a real kit, which I still have (Rogers red-onyx 'mongrel' Cleveland, Dayton, Fullerton kit...).  Played hard until about 1985, until 'personal issues' (read: drugs & alchohol..) ruined my rockstar plans.  Put the kit into storage in Feb. 1987 when I went clean and met my wife.  Became a Christian, got married and didn't play again until about 1993 or so.  Started playing regularly in Dec. 1999 when I purchased a Tama Starclassic Performer kit with a small bit of money left to me after my mom's death.

Nowadays I bang on an electric kit in a church praise band on Sunday mornings and while I wait to be discovered...well...that's the dream anyway...

I've had about three 'formal' lessons, I suck at math and play by heart.  Can't count a measure off in my head on a good day, but I get by.  Lots of help early on from drummers who either didn't have a kit and used mine, or had no place to practice and used my house-and I'm grateful for all of them.  Someday I'll get around to sending a tape off to Bart so he can give it to me straight  ;D

Anyway-Drummer Cafe is still a great place and I'm glad to be back!

Almost forgot:  5'6", one hundred and too many pounds, Wife, three kids, one granddaughter....

(let me know if this is too much information and I'll edit it down to one sentence... :-[...)

Yes and Yes. I was part of another drum forum back in 2000 that was dying. James Walker and Felix were part of that same forum. I got the idea to start my own forum and incorporate some of the values that I thought needed to be present in an online community ... and the Drummer Cafe was born ... December, 2001. Needless to say its grown a lot since then and the vision is a lot bigger now.

Hello everyone

my name is Brendan and i'm a drum addict. I'm 21 years old. I've been drumming since I was 12 or something like that. I honestly don't remember an exact age. My avatar is lame. I own a pearl masters studio kit, racked. I'm not a fan of using the same brand cymbals all around, even though people tell me I should. Right now I use a mix of zildjians, sabian B8's, wuhan turkish chinas, and pearls. I like the way they sound... i'll probably put my full specs in sig.

oh and I'm from manchester connecticut. I'm currently not in a band. I was in a band for  like 6-7 months but I left due to the lack of creativity and commitment of other members.

No one knows who I am. I wasn't exactly an "active" member in my school. I got kicked out and went to boarding school in california. That was cool. Some really rich kid brought in a $5000 electric set... I used it 10x more than he did. Pretty much every day for like, 2 years or so. That kid hated me. But I really didn't care.

anyways... i'm always looking for people to meet, hopefully this site with give me some kind of exposure.

and thats about it.

Dave Huffman here, found this place the other night I thought I would give it a try.
I play Ludwig & GMS drums & use Zildjian cymbals . Have the GMS set for sale & they will be at the chicago show. I am playing a mid 80's ludwig kit with a large 14" X 28" bass drum, 12" X 14 rack tom & a 16" X 16" floor tom.
I love talking drums both old & new. Glad to find this place.

Welcome aboard Dave. Great board here if your stuck on equiptment choices, need info on building a custom snare-drum or anything that involves the greatest art in the universe....DRUMMING!! 8). 28'' bass drum?, it takes a hell of a man to control a 28. Sounds like you and Abe Laboriel Jr. may be starting the latest fad. The largest BD ive owned was a 26 and im now down to a 22 for ease of miking and fitting in my 96 Kia sportage.

Title: Re: Hello all, new guy here!
Post by: Dave H. on May 06, 2007, 11:16 PM
It's weird but the 14" X 28" is a real easy drum to get a good soud from for me. It can be real soft or roar like a lion. Love that drum. My problem drum is the 12" X 14" rack tom. I just found a 9" X 13" shell that I will have painted to match the custom red - silver duco a friend in Indy. Painted for me. I may use the 14" as a floor tom or cut it down to a 7" X 14 snare drum.
I pretty much have always played American made drums Except I do have a nice 80's Tama Rock Star I am going to use for trading material. I helped a buddy out that needed some$$$.
 Drums sure are fun!

I don't think I introduced myself yet.  If I did already, my apologies.  [I tried to search and couldn't find myself.  :)  ]

I have been trying to find a drum forum *home*, and I introduced myself elsewhere, but I don't think here.

Anyway, I'm returning to drumming after many, many years.  I studied drums for several years as a kid, and gigged in my teens and twenties.  It went on the shelf when I got out of the house, got married, had kids, etc.

In my 30's, I *discovered* bass, and currently, I gig out on bass.

Recently, the urge has been too great to deny any longer, and I had to return to drums.  I now have a small, compact kit in my house for the first time in many years.

I'm actually having more fun returning to work on rudiments than I do playing rhythms and playing along to songs.    For now.

It's great to be back.

I'm Peter Olofsson, living in Umeå, north Sweden. I've been drumming since 1983, and I play some bass, keyboards and guitar as well. Not "as well", but......

Soon I'm graduating as an electronics engineer at the university of Umeå, so I might have to move frome here later, who knows.... Anyway, I currently make a living playing gigs with my cover band in Umeå, and sometimes in the mountains, also (after-ski gigs).

The Drummer Café is a great place to hang out  :)

All the after-ski gigs I've done so far has been in hotel bars, but last year in Riksgränsen (on the Norwegian border) the weather was so good, we played outdoors. If you've seen "Copper Mountain" (Jim Carrey's debut, horrible movie ;D ) you have an idea what it looks like. Very beautiful  :)

We also play in a place called Borgafjäll. Unfortunately, we didn't play there on New Year's Eve 2005. Unfortunately because, later I learned that Robert Plant showed up in the audience that night, and asked to sing some songs with the band!!  :o  I can only imagine the adrenaline rush they must have felt.... The reason he was there was because he was dating the daughter of the owner of the hotel (Lisa Lövbrand, who has a solo record out now). You certanly don't expect to see Robert Plant in a place like Borgafjäll ;)

Chris, I assume you were visiting the Toontrack studio, or do you have other connections to UmeÃ¥? In fact, Toontrack is only 200 meters from where I grew up. I don't know the people at Toontrack, but I've played with the percussionist (Mikael Emsing) many times. He's in the video that you posted here some time ago.  :)

Greetings all,

I'm fairly new to this forum and wanted to say hello to everyone out there.  I live in southern Colorado where I teach music (percussion, world music, music literature)  at Adams State College.  My career has included the USAF Band of the Golden West, numerous orchestras in the south and on the west coast, and various bands/groups in a variety of "styles" along the way.  My current projects include an Irish group, my own jazz trio, a marimba/flute duo, accompanist to a belly dance troupe, and in a couple weeks, I'm off to the Middle East/Horn of Africa with the rock band from the Air National Guard Band of the Gulf Coast.

This forum has great stuff, great member responses, and a variety info for everyone to continue learning!

Thanks DrummerCafe!!

James

Hey guys,
Name's Darren, and I'm 22. Just graduated from the University of Colorado, and maybe my first big regret of life is that my degree was not in music. Anyway, since I'm in the process of moving around, finding a job, getting settled, all that nonsense, I currently don't have any solid gigs, but hopefully in a month or so that'll change. I love playing all kinds of music, fave artists include everything from Coltrane to Marley to Tool.

Favorite drummers I'm digging right now include (short sample, obviously): Jeff Ballard (I've already decided my first dog I get in a month or so is going to be named Ballard, in tribute), Brian Blade, Elvin, Danny Carey, Chad Sexton (tight, tight, tight rudiment based drumming in a mainstream setting, love Chad) etc. So all gigs I've had before only satisfied my music thirst in only one sense, I prefer to have multiple projects going on at once. (Although sometimes my ambition overreaches my abilities!)

Anyway really random introduction, but glad to be here and look forward to being able to say words like "pataflafla" and know people understand what I'm talking about, and aren't thinking I've gone nuts.

That's so sick. What was he like when he was marching for you guys? Was he just a normal old snare drummer (well compared to the others in the line, you can hardly call those guys "normal"), or did he stand out in any way?

Btw, given your experience I'm sure I'll be bouncing many ideas off you / asking for your advice in the future!!!

Chad was just a very nice high school kid. I was fortunate to have several of his talent level in the line. All the snares left for Sky. Some are now band directors in the Omaha area. Chad called me once when 311 was playing in DFW, but I wasn't able to go to the show.

tl;dr worthy

After a bit over 3 decades of drawing breath, only the first seven were without drums. Since then they have always been a part of my life. When other interests or activities were the focus of my attention, they were still lurking. For a period of not having a Set to play, the steering wheel of the car or my knees and chest took its place.

I shared a set with my older brother for several years. I remember a, well brotherly ;) , conversation. I had been on for a bit and He felt that it was his turn. All we had were some head phones to jam with and when he interrupted me he said "You don't know how to play that song, maybe you should learn it first. It's my turn." As I was getting up, I said to him with a smirk "I played it close enough for you to recognize it didn't I" and left the basement while dodging a 5B.

Nevertheless, I was always impressed with the accuracy with which he could match songs, fills, etc. Walking into the house within a few seconds, I knew what song he was playing. That just never was my style. I like butchering songs to make them the way they make me feel.

From what I have read so far on this forum, I am on the other side of the curve and will not have much to add. I will lurk, but in this situation, I feel it is more read, think, absorb- repeat and contribute when I can.

Ross

Hi, I guess I'll introduce myself since I've been lurking here for a bit.  My name is Mark and I am a bit past the 4 decade point.  I grew up in MA and now lay my hat in the Inland Empire of SoCal.  I've always loved a variety of music.  I first started playing drums back in high school. I bought a 4-piece piece of crap from a guy I worked with.  Took a few lessons here and there.  I was never one for structured practice, I just loved banging away to to the radio or tapes.  By the time I turned 18, in true Kieth Moon style my set layed in busted-up splintered ruins.  Anger issues maybe?  Now after a 23 year break I'm jumping back in with a new Pearl set and an appreciation for taking it slower and learning the basics first.  These boards seem pretty cool with good info and I'm sure I'll be asking for advice a lot, and hopefullyill be able to add my 2 cents at some point.

Hi everyone,

I've been posting for sometime, but never really introduced myself. My name is Jorge Canela, and I am Portuguese (small country next to Spain). I have playing bass for 10 years, Guitar for 8, and drums for 6 months. My main instrument is guitar, 'cause ppl kept telling me I was playing too many notes on my bass guitar :)

I did a two year audio engineering course, and actually teach several subjects at a Music Technologies Institute in Lisbon.

So basically I do everything music related: perform (live and studio, guitar and bass), compose, write lyrics, record, edit, mix, master, musical directing, arrangement work.

I love rock (I include metal under rock), prog, classical and pop. Like some other stuff too, but this is what makes me move.

I am now doing a two hour, daily drum practice routine, and expect to hit the stages with my all original band (Seed, hard rock trio) in the beggining of next year, with the production of our debut album starting at the same time.

Cheers

Hello everybody. This is my first post here.

I have been playing drums for quite a while now. Since 2002. But, I always played in a band and never had time to really practice. I played only during rehearsals. In the last year and a half I didn't play at all, because of other obligations.

I started playing again a month ago and I'm really keen to learn playing drums properly. I never had a teacher. Internet was my only resource and it's the same now. I found this website and it's very helpful.

I've always wanted to learn how to play a double bass pedal so I bought a Sonor DP 472 R. As for the Metronome I'm using a Korg LMA 120. ;D

Well, I've been playing professionally for over fifty years. My background is in jazz, rock, blues, country, classical, you name it I've probably played it. I spent quite a few years in Chicago and did studio work there for about seven years and played with an eight piece horn band doing originals and BS&T, Chicago, Maynard and a lot of R&B. I was the percussion section leader for the Missoula, Montana Symphony for about three years. I've had a many and varied career from funk to big band.

I've been playing the same set of Red Sparkle Buddy Rich Celebrity Rogers Drums for over forty years. 22x14 - 9x13 - 16x16 and I added an 8x12 a few years later. I purchased my COB 1963 Dyna-Sonic new in the summer of 64. This set has been played professionally almost every week since I bought them. The greatest drums ever made. I bought my zyldjians, after four months of trying cymbals, at Franks Drum Shop in Chicago.

I'm married and have lived in Missoula, MT (The Last Best Place) for the last 32 years.

Looking forward to meeting some of you and sharing what I have from this wonderful business called music and learning from you.

Hello everybody.
My name is chong ee or u guys can call me CE or CEing!  ;D I just started to learn drums around 6 months ago. Me and some of my friends who are beginners as well formed a band around the time I started to learn drums, i guess playing and learning with someone u are more familiar with is much more comfortable.  :) Oh by the way i am from Singapore, anyone of u guys from Singpaore too? I came across this forum when i was searching for more information about drums and stuff on yahoo. This is really a good forum seriously. Oh and i have been looking for this book called the 'stick control for the snare drummer' by George Lawrence Stone (guess u guys are quite familiar with this book) around Singapore for ages, i thought it would be quite expensive if i imported it into Singapore (taxes and all that stuff  :-X) and would like to find out if anyone of u guys knows which retailer in Singapore sells this book (I have been to quite a number of bookshops but to no avail  :-\) Thx a lot.

Hello all, my name is Kevin. I'm new to the forum, so I thought I'd introduce myself. A little about me, I've been into music since I was very young. I got my start in drumming playing concert snare for the school in 5th grade roughly 18 years ago. Before I knew it, I was hooked.

I loved marching band as I got older, as well as concert band. My first taste of drum set playing was for my school's basketball pep-band, and from there, I started my journey. Currently, I'm playing for the band Killing Chloe, which is in the realm of Rock/Progressive/Pop, and I'm having a blast.

I've been reading some of the articles here, and I'm looking forward to applying some of them to my day to day study, as well as chatting with all of you. This looks like a great site from what I've seen so far. Thanks for having me.

Hello everyone,
I found the forum running a search on some vintage Acrolite information and ended up lurking here for about 3 hours! Great forum here: a nice, more mature crowd and tons of great information. The articles are good too, and have actually motivated me to get out the 'ole practice pad again!

I've only been playing for about 2 years. Got a stencil kit when I could afford to, then sold a kidney and upgraded to a PDP CX after about a year when I realized how much I love drumming. Like some other kids, my formal training consisted of playing my mom's pots and pans with wooden cooking spoons starting at about 8 years old and now here I am 20-something years later with a real kit :)

Looking forward to chatting with everyone!

Cheers,
Steve

Title: Let me introduce myself
Post by: Loubuntu on January 10, 2008, 01:33 PM
Hello everyone ... just wanted to introduce myself after lurking on this site for a while, which I enjoy a lot by the way, not in the least because of the lack of young dogs shouting, screaming and lacking some sense of decent behaviour that you find on so many other websites. Living in The Netherlands, age 48, married and a dad of 2 kids,  never played an instrument before I recently started my attempts learning to play drums ... quite a challenge, but a fun one. A thread  in this forum that started over a year ago by a 63-year young member gave me confidence that in a year or so I will be able to reach a skill level good enough to play in a band with some friends. I tried to teach myself with a stack of books and dvd's but quickly realized that some support from a teacher would be more helpful. I found one but I will go and look for another one ... one who knows about the book " Stick Control" and knows drummers like Gavin Harrison and Keith Carlock  :-\. Well for now I leave it with this introduction ... and say thanks to you for all the inspiration I get here.

LouisM

Hi Lou, welcome to the DC group. As you can see some of us are experienced veterans, and many others are just beginning. Either way, this is a great bunch of people. Even as a guy who played since my school days, I learn something new all the time. When I was inspired to find a drumming community I couldn't have asked for nicer people to be with. I would love to visit your country, but I doubt that will ever happen. My grandmother was from Norway so I know a little about your country. It's nice to meet you....  :)

Chip71 ... thanks for the welcome ... and you're right a bunch of nice people here ... Now it seems that besides the fact that there's a lot to learn for me here there is a little opportunity for me to share some info on a non-drum-related topic ....

Norway and the Netherlands have from a geographical and especially geological point of view nothing in common. Norway is a very mountainous ... and compared to the Netherlands a huge country. I can drive from north to south in a little over 3 hours, from east to west in less than 2.5 hours and ... without the risc of a speeding ticket (if there are no traffic jams, well ok 4 hours because there are almost always traffic jams :( ) .... In Norway climate can be extreme with long dark cold winters with lots of snow. The Netherlands ... a small flat rainy and windy (especially from late summer to spring) country ... maybe a couple of days some snow and every decade (if we're lucky) ice on the canals to skate on,  I live 6 meters below sea level about 10 miles from the North Sea, (it feels like Europe's kitchen sink). A storm like Katrina (thank God we don't have those) would probably flood half of the country. No, i'm afraid we're nothing like Norway :).  Nevertheless, the Netherlands is worth a visit, I am sure you would enjoy it ... but be warned, don't expect coffee in our coffee shops .... lol.

Best regards,

Louis

Haven't sat behind a kit since the mid 1980's. Played guitar all my life, and when I told my wife I wanted to play drums again, she said, "So, what are you waiting for. Go do it."

Long story longer... bought a used kit from a friend, new cymbals, new heads...small investment to see if I still have it in me. Already I am looking to upgrade one piece at a time. If nothing else, it's a great workout!

I have been a member since back end of last year and have posted on a few things but never formally introduced myself.

My name is Paul, I am 21 and from Preston in Lancashire (United Kingdom)
I have been playing properly since June 2007 when I got my first and current drum kit (Pearl Forum). Fairly recently I got myself a pack of Zildjian cymbals and more recently, Remo heads.

I play mainly rock stuff, with a bit of funk.

Nice to meet you all

Hello Peep's
Just getting the passion back after a long, long layoff and I came across this forum and very glad I am too.   I'm very pleased to meet you all....so to speak.
Anyway, before I logged on I was looking at a thread about soundproofing one's apartment and now the forum seems to have changed it's format somewhat and I can't find it. Forgive me if I'm doing something obviously dumb, I have had very little sleep in the last week and I'm having a tough time concentrating.
It was in a section called "Tips and tricks", right above one called "Acoustic drums",  I think!
Thanks.

We have been together for about 4 months, playin out already and have 2 big festivals lined up so far for this summer.  We are playing a combo of originals and rearranged covers, but not the normal covers.  Love playin and hope to continue playin until it is no longer physically possible.

A DW collectors six pieces for graduation, a RMV kit that I bought with bar mitzvah money, and an old premier three piece shell pack I traded a double pedal for. k customs for cymbals.

Hi.  I've been observing on the forum for a while.  I'm from Indiana and started playing again about 3 years ago.  I played mostly rock in the basement and garage, but this time I was drawn into classical and concert band material and discovered a love for military marches.  I play in a concert band and recently had my first drumset gig :o  ;D with a dixieland-type band.

I'm a huge fan of old and new garage rock, rockabilly, and am slowly getting drawn into the mysterious world of jazz.

I have a Tama fusion kit, and if I'm very, very good I might be able to take home a Gretsch jazz kit before the year ends. Cymbals are 14" old New Beats hi hats, a Sabian Vault crash and a Sabian medium heavy ride.  I recently added a 7 X 13 Gretsch snare to the two snares I already have.

It's good to talk drums and music, isn't it?
