Post by: bolweevil on January 07, 2008, 08:09 AM Here's some recent video footage of two of my bands (different bands, different nights--same bar, though--they videotape every show).
One clip includes some awesome guest sax from the awesome Sue Orfield. One is from Halloween, and the other happens to be the singer's birthday. See if you can guess which is which. http://youtube.com/watch?v=JqALQoIRoxg (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JqALQoIRoxg) http://youtube.com/watch?v=6lnM4HJ0jhM (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6lnM4HJ0jhM) Not only do both groups have the same drummer (yours truly :P) but the same bass player as well. He's pretty nice sounding isn't he? The sound of the Mp3's stink but dig my sonor siggy snare. Awesome ain't it? ;D http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=307971696 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=307971696) Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! here´s a live recording of a track called ´crash´ from when we played at Leeds Festival in the UK over the summer... It´s not a great mix but it´s a novelty (for me anyway) and has proved very useful for self-criticism as well... no escaping the mistakes, the studio is so much kinder :P let me know what you think! http://www.bbc.co.uk/humber/realmedia/2007/08/30/audio/redeyecrashtx.ram Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Anyways, the locals have high hopes for this young man. It is pretty much decided that I'm too old to be in his band, but it's alotta fun playing on some of his stuff. They have a fresh young drummer coming in to do the rest of his record, so we (me and the mouse in my pocket) will have to sit behind the dials and let "Jr." take all the glory from here on out :'( ;D Actually Hannah should tour with this kid *if they could afford her* Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: pdxtaco on January 23, 2008, 01:28 PM Well this is my first post here. I have been a member for a little while now and I spend quite a bit of time reading posts and searching for things that I'm looking for. I find that most of the questions I have, have already been answered. Anyway, thank you all so much for the help you have indirectly given me. Here is a recording of an original song that our band put together last weekend. It was my first time ever recording my drums and I did the 4 mic setup that has been talked about before. Feel free to give any feedback.

Not bad, considering! www.myspace.com/tastesmoothnsexy I have decided to move to this thread for awhile cause I need some excitement and I'm finding this thread exciting. ;D Uhmmm? I hate out of tune guitars? YOU don't hate me cause of that right? Oh he sounds like he got it together by the second tune. ;) Drums sound good right? Sounds like you can lay it down with your bass player. Okay, I will have to be very careful if I move to this thread. I think I can handle it. :) Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Heidi heidi ho, welcome to our little corner of cyberspace. 2ndly OMG You are Country! 3rdly not my cup of tea but it is cool you guys are recording haha yea it is country. Its funny before I joined this band I never listened to country. Its grown on me and I kinda like it now. Good thing is most country music is pretty simple for drums and i'm not any amazing drummer so thats good for me. Anyway, i'll post up when we get some more songs recorded, although the rest are just cover songs... Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! That would be cool. :) Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Nathan on January 25, 2008, 09:57 AM Well, since Felix is here, I guess I have to put something up ;D
We're getting some of the initial mixes back for our upcoming EP, here's one: Hollywood www.eekrecords.com/mp3/lna.mp3 It takes a bit for everyone to come in, the first verse is guitar and vocals only. There's ONE instance of profanity in the bridge, for those of you who are sensitive to such things. I used my Hart Dynamics E-drums, Roland TD-20 Brain, with the vexpressions LTD Timeless Timber kit. I'll post one of the uptempo songs, once we finalize a mix. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Nathan on January 25, 2008, 10:11 AM PDXtaco - Nice country tune! I'm with felix, it's not my cup of tea, but it's done well. Are you using rods? Nice choice to compliment the acoustic.
Donelk - The 3 of you definitely hit your stride by the third song. You and the bass player have a nice solid feel. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the guitarists' style, but once he tuned up, it sounded pretty good. I dislike Real Media with a passion, so I missed out on dmcc's offering. Felix's playing is cooler than that kid's hair...nuff said. (that really is a nice snare, I wish it was clearer in the mix) Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: pdxtaco on January 25, 2008, 11:46 AM PDXtaco - Nice country tune! I'm with felix, it's not my cup of tea, but it's done well. Are you using rods? Nice choice to compliment the acoustic. Thanks! I am using rods. The song was written to be played at a co-workers funeral so the lyrics standing out were the main intent. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: felix on January 26, 2008, 06:48 AM Well, since Felix is here, I guess I have to put something up ;D We're getting some of the initial mixes back for our upcoming EP, here's one: Hollywood www.eekrecords.com/mp3/lna.mp3 are the guitar and piano supposed to sound out of tune from each other? The rhythm guitar needs to clean up his playing alittle in my opinion. I like your singer's voice... he's got a little "lip music" going on- I would try and chop that out to clean it up a little though. Drums are grooving fine Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Nathan on January 26, 2008, 02:10 PM Drums are grooving fine ;D Thanks for that! The singer's got a great voice, but he could use a little polish. He tends to move around a lot, tapping feet and moving in and out from the mic. It's great when we're performing, but not so desirable in the studio. I'm working with him on that. Spot on with the guitar. I'm not crazy about mixing piano with electric guitar, especially since a keyboard piano sound is always perfectly in tune, and a guitar...isn't. It's the arrangement and sound that they want, though, so I'll let them have it for now. I keep hammering it into their heads that if you lay down a sub par track, the final mix is only going to make it worse, not better. They're starting to improve, but sometimes it's like splitting hairs. ::) Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Danno on January 28, 2008, 10:53 PM This is a brief clip of me playing along to Zeppelin's In My Time Of Dying. I figured it's about time I demonstrated on Drummer Cafe that I actually do play the drums.
EDIT: I yanked this video because my playing sucked. I'm going to post a new one in this thread that doesn't suck quite so hard. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: felix on January 29, 2008, 03:18 PM Yes you do indeed play drums and they are clipping your video cam mic!
Too bad you didn't have a little mixer to mic up your kit while blending in the zep track. Then pipe it all in to your camera's audio input. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Too bad you didn't have a little mixer to mic up your kit while blending in the zep track. Then pipe it all in to your camera's audio input. I hear ya. I recorded this on an old Sony still camera that takes video clips - it's the only thing I have that's digital that I can then download to the computer. I felt kinda lame never having posted myself playing here on DC so I just decided to wing it with that old camera. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! It was fine Danno, I felt kinda lame never having posted myself playing here on DC so I just decided to wing it with that old camera. I kinda like it raw anyway. In the right studio, they can take Chicken Sh#$ and turn it into Chicken salid sometimes. Even speed tempo's with out changing pitch, bend notes that were flat. Effects, Compression, cover stuff up with reverb or something, etc, etc. It shows the true you. Anyone that plays Zeppelin is OK with me. Nutty Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Thank you Felix,I don't know where to host music, only pictures and since I did a personal on myspace instead of a band profile I can't do it that way. I am also dumping my web site soon. It is on there but my web designer didn't label the song which is one of the reasons I am going with a different web guy. If you go to my web site and go to "Music Of the Day", you will see two songs that have no label. One of those songs is Allan Parsons, "Wouldn't Want to be like You". It was done in one take. Or give me a good host site and I will post it tonight? Nutty Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Danno on January 30, 2008, 05:06 PM ...Anyone that plays Zeppelin is OK with me. Post by: drumnut1 on January 30, 2008, 11:10 PM Yeah - I remember YOUR video here playing Zep with your band. You rocked it. I have got this on another gig with this band that is better, but, I haven't played music with those guys in a few years. They were pretty good but the guitar player fell off and went to other non musical adventures and that is what happend. Part of It#@!. This is 4 years old. http://www.thenuttydrummer.com/LiveConcert.html. This should work until my friend unplugs the website. I am working on something better. Someone,?? Tell me who or what I need to host a few songs???? I have two songs that are done. The copy write was just completed and I can show you some of my studio work from my basement to the pro studio. I just need to know how to find a host? Nutty Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Hey Felix,I was able to get my web guy to put it on the first page. Here you go!! It is Allan Parson's "Wouldn't want to Be like You". Done by my three man band "A Band Of Three" We recorded the instruments in one take. As long as you have an updated version of Media Player, it should work as soon as you click on this link. If not go to the bottom of the page and click in the players play button twice. Sorry about the shirtless Picture, it was my web guys idea. http://www.thenuttydrummer.com/. Hope you like it? They're mainly a group of talented semi pros and band directors. They do a decent job, the crowd was good, and it was nice to perform with them. This is part of my introduction into doing stuff like this guest performer thing, and we probably had about 40 total minutes to work on this. I'm not ready for big time sitting in yet with the very best big bands, so this kinda gig will suit me for the time being for sure. Actually I'm still mainly a combo person, but I do like big bands too.
Part 2 (solo 1 after Somewhere) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_Yukhmpbaw Part 3 (solo 2 to the end) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIrjUJyZbng Since it's West Side Story and all, I'm sure some of the Rich fanatics will be trying to analyze what I've done here but that's cool. I'm debating where to show for a part 1, but for now I've posted the 2 main solos. __________________ Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! www.myspace.com/chantorion There's 3 songs up there at the moment, from a demo we started recording in August. Unfortunately our singer just quit the band, so we put it up on myspace to help us find a new singer. Constructive criticism welcome. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! http://www3.telus.net/public/Aridyme/Drums/aridyme-20080210_3.mp3 This is from one of a few jam sessions with a guitarist friend of mine where I listen to what he plays and try to come up with something for it on the fly. Pretty basic drumming as I'm still quite a noob, but I really like what my buddy came up with so I thought I'd share it. Try your best to ignore the mistakes and such please :) Title: Re: My West Side Story Post by: Chris Whitten on February 28, 2008, 04:18 PM I'm debating where to show for a part 1, but for now I've posted the 2 main solos. You only ever post solos, great and all that, but it's perhaps 5% of what drumming is about. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: felix on March 03, 2008, 07:19 AM I think Matt and Hannah should date each other ;D They are both about the same age right?
Title: Re: My West Side Story Post by: mattjazz on March 04, 2008, 12:00 PM You only ever post solos, great and all that, but it's perhaps 5% of what drumming is about. Well Chris, I'm not so sure that's entirely true. Respectfully, after all when my solo was over during part 3, I didn't just walk off and have the guitar player finish the piece. Now I'm not trying to be snitty, but again with respect, I'm wondering where a comment like that comes from. It's confusing sometimes. When I was posting speed stuff on a pad, it was all you ever do is that, why not show something on a set. So OK, you post set work, then it's all you ever do is solos, although stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EKCFFeSipU and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kAqaR3hjhI is on the same cover page of the youtube channel. I also post DJ mixes: http://youtube.com/watch?v=4dOi_4Gebnc I've also put up vibes stuff on other video sharing sites. Maybe I can find some of that and post. I mean I'm cool with whatever. I post solos mostly, because that's what's viewed on youtube 99% of the time, and over time, has constituted the lion's share of posts in this thread as well. Moreover, since I'm primarily known as a technician type, more people seem to want to know the various ways you handle your left hand, trad grip, hi-hat possibilities, etc. If I were Steve Gadd (which I'm not even close to being), or most appropriately here you, with a large body of work, then certainly you might see something else. Otherwise, why? Seriously and with the cool level head, is my response a fair one? Please also know that I know who you are and admire what you have done for drumming. You are the drummer who's played with Paul McCartney right? Therefore I know your comments are sincere, as I hope you can take from mine as well. I'm pleased you stopped by to listen. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: felix on March 05, 2008, 03:57 PM Mattjazz, with all due respect, previously all you ever did here was post your gobbledy gook videos (my opinion, you probably would hate my solos if you heard them yourself- no big deal).
You really don't help other people out here / aren't an active member here- that's ok in my opinion also. But when you come back with a post like you just did- that's just ego man, whether you know it yet or not. You come off to me as having a big ego- in your playing and posting and then put in a line about humility? I don't buy it. That's ok though 'cause that's where you are at right now. Really, it's ok and who you are as a player, that is actually cool. So if Chrisso ain't digging your stuff, so be it. This place is about opinions. He does not have to post anything about his playing either- the man knows what drumming is about and has probably played drums for about 2 of your lifetimes. Good luck. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: mattjazz on March 05, 2008, 06:06 PM Felix, I'm sorry you feel that way. You make a good point. You're right, I don't post enough here, making impressions look any number of ways. That's my problem to correct and no one else's.
Have a good day. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: New York Frank on March 05, 2008, 06:45 PM Hmm, I typically don't read this thread nor listen to the clips.
Somehow, this time around, the drama caught my eye :) so I had to read back a few posts and then check out some clips. Interesting. :) Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Mister Acrolite on March 05, 2008, 08:31 PM Matt, I think the biggest problem is that one never gets the sense that you feel you have anything to LEARN from being here. You've lectured us on speed, drum corps, what jazz is and who stole it from whom, and have shown us umpteen videos of you soloing. But I don't remember you asking any questions, or starting any discussions that indicated a thirst for knowledge. Instead, I only see your eagerness to show us what you've got.
You're still in your teens, right? You have here at the Cafe a whole bunch of people who have been playing drums professionally longer than you've been alive. In cases like mine, MUCH longer than you've been alive. You're a talented drummer. You've got good hands, okay feet, and some knowledge. Guess what? There's more to drums. LOTS more. And a ton of it is accessible to you right here, if you ever stop to listen. Or ask questions. Or maybe just read some posts and absorb some knowledge. Believe me, I respect talent, and do NOT think that only older drummers know what's going on. Tony Williams played some of his greatest stuff in his teens - stuff most of us (myself included) STILL can't touch. That was Tony. You're not Tony. Not even close. Neither am I, all these years later. But my point is, I'll cut some slack to a teenager with Tony's skills. A guy like that can get in my face. But you can't - you haven't earned the right, and your playing is not enough to earn that right. And I suspect I'm not alone in feeling that way. You've clearly spent some time studying the great drummers. Here's a tip: study not only their playing, but their behavior. I've never heard Steve Gadd or Vinnie Colaiuta say ANYTHING cocky or disrespectful. EVER. And those are guys that certainly could back it up with their playing. In fact, other than a VERY few artists, I think you'll see that sort of thing just isn't done. Why? Guys that good don't NEED to be cocky - their playing speaks for itself. You play well. For a teenager, you play VERY well. But you're not in a league of your own, so stop acting like you are, and you'll get along with people a LOT better. My two cents. I wish you well. It's clear that you're passionate, and I respect that. But you need to emulate the grace of the pros, not just their playing. Buddy Rich might have been arrogant, but he was Buddy Freaking Rich. You're not. Nor am I. That's why every time I log in at the Cafe, I do so looking forward to what I might LEARN. Not just what I might teach somebody else. Give that attitude a try, and you might have a better time here. Mr. A. Moderator Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Louis on March 05, 2008, 08:50 PM That's why every time I log in at the Cafe, I do so looking forward to what I might LEARN. Not just what I might teach somebody else. I have been playing since 1964. Like Keith, I look forward to spending time at the Drummer Cafe. The main reasons I hang out at the Cafe is to enjoy myself. I enjoy learning about our craft and there are few times I fail to learn something when I spend time with my friends at the Drummer Cafe. I also enjoy sharing what little knowledge I have gathered in my life with musicians who are hungry for knowledge. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Gaddabout on March 06, 2008, 03:52 AM First, I like Matt. I like his playing, I like that he's smart, and articulate, and is in fact interested in what others have to say. When I think of young players I meet online the last 10 years who will have a good chance of gracing the cover of Modern Drummer som day, Matt's one of those guys. Not that that's his agenda, I'm just saying.
That said, Matt, I have to agree with Keith here based on the totality of your interaction on this board. Maybe you agree with me or maybe you don't, but I think you've matured quite a bit the past 3 years and it's probably not fair to judge you based on something you posted, say, 2 years ago. But this board has been around awhile and reputations tend to die hard. Your initial reception here was ... not smoothly received. You had some strong comments to make in defense of WFD. Admittedly, many of us just won't have it no matter what the context, and I still think you are an exception to the WFD rule -- you have good musical chops, not just great single strokes (or whatever). But the point is you crashed here with an opinion that was not very popular, and you left with a small chip on your shoulder about it. You really needed to engage people here more before coming back with your clips. That's just board dynamics. You haven't given people much of a chance to get to know you outside of your clips, and relationship is tantamount to trust. I know there's more to you than all of this, but no one but me around here has had much of a chance to see it. FWIW, I've exchanged some e-mails with Matt and some posts on another board, and I think he's a really good guy. He's worth interacting with and giving him a chance to see if your perceptions are worth holding on to. If I lived anywhere near him, we'd probably be good friends. Chris, dude, I know you've got a good point to make, but this thread sort of begs solos and showy doesn't it? The spirit of the comment struck me as having a little bitter edge to it, and not constructive like you usually are. Also, almost all of Matt's performances so far have been in the jazz and big band category, very normal for someone on a high academic track in this country. Maybe when he gets out of college and starts playing for pay we'll get to see what he can do with 2&4. In the meantime, I won't hold it against him for showing us his highlights from a big show like this. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Riddim on March 06, 2008, 06:49 PM From what I read of Chris's comments, which make perfect sense to me, it would be nice to see more of how you play the band, how you shape an arangement and enable a band to play better than it would without you.

Considering he's considered to be not older than me, he seems well "directioned", technique-wise. How large is the big band piece in question? If very long, that's a reason for highlighting a solo (or in this case two lol). I personally enjoyed the second solo, it was fun. But I love jazz drums at any part of the song, and I think that a regular part of the song would also be great for showing his skills. The feel! Mattjazz might be learning a lot from the forum! I read several times more than what I choose to write/type/post about. I hope he is, I hope we all are. all above said by a person who plays a tiny fraction of what all the other posters play. ;D Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! While I have not read much from Matt on drummercafe, I have read a lot of Matt's posts on other web sites and FWIW, I agree 100% with the above observations. In the threads I have read elsewhere Matt was gracious beyond his years. Just my experience. Regardless of what odd threads I find interesting outside drummercafe, I always come back. Drummercafe is my absolute favorite on-line drum forum. I hope Matt finds his comfort zone here and settles into this great community.Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: yonatan on March 19, 2008, 02:00 PM Great clips in this thread!
It is a privilege to be able to see and hear them. I hope you enjoy these 2 of me on percussion. I may have posted the second one once about a year ago, am not sure. The first is of a brother and I jamming, filmed by another brother. The second is of me soloing. Hope you enjoy! Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Nick on April 20, 2008, 04:45 PM Sorry I haven’t been here for a while, ‘I am but a worm’ etc… :-[
I have finally got an mp3 from our new album for you all, I think my drumming is a bit more musical than on the last one, that’s mainly because I have ran out of talent & don’t practice as much as I used to, so I can’t play as much of the self indulgent rubbish nowadays.. MP3 File (http://www.isor.net/media/ISOR-Dykes-Make-My-Sperm-Strike.mp3) I am finding it hard to get really ‘into’ drums at the moment, but I am looking forward to the touring on this album & I am hoping it will re-kindle the drumming flame & you will see me here a bit more often.. Cheers N Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: riot2003 on May 02, 2008, 01:27 AM soooo this is my band doctor!doctor! I dig the music. Where are you touring? Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Nick on May 02, 2008, 02:36 PM Hey nick, Hi Riot,I dig the music. Where are you touring? Thanks! They are planning it over the next month or so, but I have been told that they will hopefully include US & Australian dates as well as the UK & European shows. I am guessing it’s dependent on pre-sales, but that the moment they are going quite well so who knows… I would really like to do the US & OZ dates even if it’s only 5-7 shows each, I have never been to ether country & have always wanted to… I have just been watching your video, cool stuff! Just the kind of thing I am into, have you guys got any CD’s for sale? Cheers :) N Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: cymbalholic on June 07, 2008, 08:31 PM Hey guys...I know I rarely contribute as a member here and I apologize, and more so for dumping more youtube bandwidth here, but I thought I'd shamelessly post a couple video clips from a concert I worked this week.
This was a performance billed under the pianist's name. We were playing his compositions. The first clip is just a vamp/harmonic figure he gave us before the gig to improvise on. Still just a simple 32 bar thing. So, we do take a few liberties. Second (and third) clip...part one and two...are of a tune that the pianist composed for a friend who passed away. Anyway, we had some fun. "X-Set" (a last-minute improvised piece): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVADjEaI-MQ "Yours Truly" Part 1 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y17dCtrBq6s "Yours Truly" Part 2 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7iR8cLAx1w Thanks for watching! :) p.s. if you're really geeky, you can go to the youtube page for each video and click the "watch in high quality" link and watch it without so much compression. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: RhythmStop on June 08, 2008, 01:24 AM I've had some free time this year, and just started back up playing.
Here's one thing I made: http://www.rhythmstop.com/sounds/poowebclip.mp3 I basically have been soloing to a click, finding some ideas that I like, then run with them and sort of arrange them and then I put weird ambient sounds over them. The other things I did, which were much less rhythmically boring, but will make South Park fans really are these: http://www.rhythmstop.com/sounds/tourette%27s.mp3 And Towelie: http://www.rhythmstop.com/sounds/towelie.mp3 I had a lot of fun making them, and it can be a little humbling to hear yourself play fills badly that you thought you could play well. :) Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play! Post by: Meltz on July 02, 2008, 08:17 AM Felix, I'm sorry you feel that way. You make a good point. You're right, I don't post enough here, making impressions look any number of ways. That's my problem to correct and no one else's. Have a good day. FWIW, I think your clips were fantastic! Also, I think you responded to the criticism & subsequent attacks with maturity, humility and respect. I was just as bewildered as you were to read CW's reply to your West Side Story solos. Just seemed like a strange criticism (for this thread inparticular). Of course everyone has a right to their opinions, but everyone has a right to respond to said opinions. Your responses didn't come across as being arrogant to me in the slightest. I'll be watching your vids over and over again. Title: Re: Let's See or Hear You Play!
