Title: Wrist vs. Third Finger Action Post by: Muldible on January 06, 2007, 04:24 PM Recently I had a friend of mine showed me a technique for closed rolls that didnt require him to bend his wrists at all. His use the third (ring) finger on either had to bounce the stick, and only used his wrists for heavier accenting. Ive always sort of used a combination of mostly wrist and some finger action to do rolls, but was wondering how you guys felt about it and if you had any opinions about why it might be better or worse. Also, does anyone here use this technique for single stroke rolls..or even blast beats? And what about using this technique around the kit? Id love to hear your thoughts.

I think this is a better pursuit by studying finger control in its entirety and not just for a few applications.
Closed or buzz rolls, to me, are defined by the ability to control the stick and the skeleton pattern you use. Whatever technique you use to achieve this is probably fine assuming it isn't tripping you going into or coming out of the roll. I've know a few guys who can't do anything coming out of a closed roll because their hands are stiffened up. That's not helpful. No matter what you use, wrist or third finger, as long as you have controll your in business. I personally use the wrist action since I was taught in this manner and I'm generally a creature of habit.I'm still working on the matched grip, but continue to revert back to the traditional without thinking ffom time to time. Has to do with old dogs and new tricks, I think.

Title: Re: Wrist vs. Third Finger Action Post by: NickC425 on February 12, 2007, 10:49 PM I say use both. Keep the fulcrum there, but never only have your thumb and pointer finger on the stick at a time. It looks really akward! For my rolls, all my fingers are on my stick. When I do fast sextuplets, sometimes I use a little of both. For six-stroke rolls, my fingers are all on the stick. You will develop your own style. :)
