The picture was taken at chrismas time a couple of years ago! ;) Anyway, I´ve had this kit for 3 years now I think and I´m still very pleased with it, it´s perfect for metaldrumming. And I still LOVE the finish! It´s awesome to play death/trashmetal on a pimped up kit like this! Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Drumodad on February 15, 2007, 04:53 PM Balooba, love the shine!

Paul Marshall here owner & sensei at www.Drumdojo.com (http://www.Drumdojo.com). (http://www.spiritdrummers.com/images/spirit_snare2.jpg) (http://www.spiritdrummers.com/images/spirit_naked_plan.jpg) (http://www.spiritdrummers.com/images/spiritdrumset_03.jpg) I play a spiritdrums drumset (one of 12 ever made) and recently put together a couple of sites - one specifically on spiritdrums that oozes beautiful images, even if I say so myself. http://www.spiritdrummers.com (http://www.spiritdrummers.com). The other is www.tunadrum.com (http://www.tunadrum.com) a drumset tuning site that forms the basis of the wikipedia drumset tuning entry (for now as I am revising it) This also includes lots of lovely photos of my Spiritdrums drum set which is now 7 years old, serial #3 and looks better every day as the wood cures. (The Masters Custom gets some shots too) The site is intended for those interested in spiritdrums particularly but I would like to extend over time to look at solid shell drums. I am trying to track down any fellow spiritdrummers, kits, snares djembes and would ask anyone to drop me a line: whatever you like [at] drumdojo [dot] com Many thanks and sorry for doing a little exposure for spiritdrummers, we are few, far between and hard to find - the search continues. Love the Zebra fur - gives me loads of ideas :) Paul ------------ Paul Marshall Sensei www.drumdojo.com Title: Re: Show us your ... My brand spankiliciously new Sonor Force 3005. I just couldn't wait until I got it into a rehearsal space, I had to set it up in my office just to see it completely set up. And MAN does it lok purdy ;D Sonor Force 3005 (14x5.5, 22x17.5, 10x9, 12x10, 16x16) Evans heads (apart from the Aquarian kevlar snare head) Zildjian A Custom cymbals (14", 10", 14", 16", 18", 20") Pearl Eliminator pedals Gibraltar GRS-350C rack Yup, I'm in love :o On a side note, I am VERY pleasantly surprised with the Aquarian Power-House kevlar head. I'm a fairly heavy-handed drummer, so I needed something I wouldn't go through in a week. I figured I'd go for the Power-House, but wasn't expecting it to sound all that good, so I'd probably be swapping it out for gigs and recordings, but it's an awesome head. Very sensitive (more so than any other "hard-hitter" head I've tried) and very cracky. The toms are Pearl MRX customs on the left 8x7 12x9 on the right 10x8 16x16 I want to replace the 16x16 with a 14x10, it'll just make a lot more sense! The snare, unfortunately, is an old piece of ****. I want to get a new snare :( And I want to replace that stagg on the left with some sort of nice jazzy ride. I'm a lurker here for sure.
Set up the Sonor Signature 5pc kit (early 80's) bubinga veneers over 12 mil of beech. Put some new ludwig silver dots over ludwig clear med's as well. These have some nice zing to them on these tubs: 10x10, 12x12, 17x15, 18x22 and 8x14 snare. With these super deep drums you can really hear the difference between the bottom reso and the batter. So it was alot of fun dialing in some tones, especially with the decay part of the drum sound. I really enjoy this combo- it's pretty bright, but these drums are very dry, so it makes for a pretty cool sound. Can't wait to see how they sound with the band. I record with these drums now and then, but never do any live stuff, until now. So that should be interesting. Enjoy... maybe? Post by: felix on April 03, 2007, 08:07 AM yeah, I just hit them with the orange oil before that pic. They have been covered up for awhile, that's for sure :-\ But thanks a bunch for commenting guys.
I guess people prefer the older bubinga veneers on these to the newer bubba finishes. The new one looks kinda fake to me. The DW veneers though are pretty tough to beat. But this isn't a kit I want to play out, maybe if I really knew the venue. But these are what they are. Maybe some of you guys remembered when I ordered a Designer kit about 3 years ago and they totally screwed up the order? So I found these in a drumshop in Canton (South of Akron)... played them, liked the sound and ended up saving quite a bit of dough compared to the newer Designers (which are discontinued now BTW) ::). Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: felix on April 05, 2007, 04:49 AM Thanks alot for the kind words Byron. I got to play them some more yesterday. And what else can I say? They really don't suck. Took a little cleaning up - I replaced the tension rods, as most were pretty rusty, new heads, and I'll probably put new snares on it, eventually. Post by: Ninja Drummer on April 13, 2007, 08:57 PM It's actually a great position for cymbals. Keeping them flat allows them to move freely and vibrate fully. Mounting them at severe angles limits their movement and can lead to cracking. Well, you must be one of them power drummers, but that's what I think! Not saying you are, just a possiblity. Anyway, I used to like them that way that way as well because the sound is just like POW! Like you're punching someone. Though, I found out later, that if you angle the cymbal a little bit, than it might save your budget on sticks. Because trust me, buying a pair of Vater Recording sticks, and snappin em in 2 months ain't normal. At least, i think, cuz there like, the most durable sticks in the world right now. I've also created a technique that also gives power, and at the same time, gives that PAH! sound like, breaking a window of a car. Which to me, is an awsome sound. What I would do, is I would first hit the cymbal (crash in specific) first, with the tip, but angled in parallel to the cymbal at say, hmmm, 15 degree angle. Which, of course, is really close to hitting it flat on! But that's the point, anyway, I would then immediately, on impact, bring the stick down. To where the shaft would hit it as well, but again, it's at an almost flat on angle, so I wouldn't think the stick should suffer as much. So just imagine... A car window breaking, then a loud crash, like dropping silverware. It's a little hard to explain, though, once you've tried it, it's a pretty cool sound. An easier way I would say, is to just to, intend to hit the cymbal flat on, but again, just angle it a bit. I think it would sound even better on a splash! But it's up to you dude, your the drummer man, and it's all about you when makin a beat for a band. No one else can do it but you (on some cases lol). ---------------------------------- But sorry for the long lecture, now I know this should be in techniques section, but I was only just pointin something out. Title: My Recent Pop/Rock/Country Kit Set-up Post by: Bart Elliott on April 18, 2007, 08:48 AM I've been playing with my primary HiHat in the center of my set-up for well over 7 years now. Many of you have seen photos of my set-up in the past, but now it's simplified even more. Here's the latest photos taken just a few days ago at gig. Sorry for the poor pic quality; I used the camera on my Treo. I'll have some better photos another time.
(http://www.bartelliott.com/images/drummercafe/Photo_041507_001.JPG) (http://www.bartelliott.com/images/drummercafe/Photo_041507_006.JPG) I'm using my FIBES kit with a rack system ... Remote Cable Hi-Hat as primary (centered), 12-inch Tom is to the left of the Snare, 16-inch Floor Tom is to the right of the Snare. The Tom sizes vary at times, but these are the sizes I typically go with. I really enjoy playing this set-up; perfect for my Pop/Rock/Country gigs! I don't always use the center Hi-Hat set-up, but ergonomically speaking it's the most comfortable ... so I use it as much as I can. Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: drumnut1 on April 18, 2007, 09:07 AM Hi Bart,
That is a very cool idea for the hi hat. I can see where it would feeeel better. I would have a tough time though with the stretch between your 1st tom and floor tom. Cool setup! Any chance of seeing a clearer depiction of how you've got that Erskine snare set up with the foot pedal? Also, do you have any issues with sympathetic snare vibrations, given that having the drum set up like that isn't exactly conducive to releasing the snares? Title: Re: Bart's Percussion / Drum Hybrid Set-up Post by: Bart Elliott on April 20, 2007, 12:24 PM Any chance of seeing a clearer depiction of how you've got that Erskine snare set up with the foot pedal? Also, do you have any issues with sympathetic snare vibrations, given that having the drum set up like that isn't exactly conducive to releasing the snares? I'm going to do a thorough explanation (video) for an upcoming podcast in which I'll show how I rigged the Snare drum. Simple to do ... yet I don't believe anyone has rigged it like this before. Snare drums played with a foot-pedal isn't new, but the way I did it is new (to me at least). I came up with this last year but don't put it to use until now. The Snare strainer release is on top, so it's easy to turn on and off. Since gravity isn't helping me move the snare wires away from the drumhead (the drum is vertical instead of horizontal), I place a little something between the head and wires to keep it quiet when the Snare is in the muffled (off) position. Very easy to remove and add back; takes only 2 seconds. In fact, for this the live performance video shoot, I only used the Snare on one tune ... so I had to turn the snares off/on. Sympathetic vibrations when the snares are on wasn't any more of an issue than it is on a standard drum set-up. Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Gaddabout on April 20, 2007, 01:52 PM Now THAT is the kind of set up I've been thinking about for this gig. Only problem is it's not very cost effective. I'd have to pursue other percussion gigs to do something like that and ... probably take a couple years of lessons to learn how to play hand percussion like someone who might know what they're doing.
It's still tempting because it's so cool looking. At the very least, the Ngoma drum with pedal and the mounted pandeiro seems like to possible additions to the set up without too much education. Title: Set up for Bottle Band shows Post by: Dave Heim on April 29, 2007, 06:22 PM I'm half way thru a series of six Bottle Band shows. We sold out all six shows, so we'll be contributing back a nice amount to the local charities.
I have a very small amount of stage real estate for these shows. I'm using a couple of pieces from my small Ludwig set (1970s), a pair of Ludwig tymps, and an assortment of sound effects. Using a Meinl clamp-on trap table, Ludwig lightweight hi-hat stand, 20" bass drum, 12" tom, Acrolite snare, 16" K Custom Session crash, 12" K splash, 18" K Custom Session ride with a strip of cloth tied on the post to dry up the ring a bit. There's a bulb horn attached to the splash arm. The boom stand just beyond the hats is holding a Mark Tree (and a fan). (http://home.att.net/~davidandlisa.heim/wsb/media/209769/site1041.JPG) On the trap table: DC-powered siren from a police car (there's a battery charger on the floor to handle the AC to DC power switch. I connect the charger's alligator clips to the siren to set it off), metal slide whistle, Zildjian Burma Bell, and a cup of Starburst candy for when I get the munchies during the show (actually they're a good remedy against dry-mouth!) (http://home.att.net/~davidandlisa.heim/wsb/media/209769/site1042.JPG) Just in front of the drum set are the Ludwig tymps. On a small Gibralter trap table mounted between the tymps is a wood block, another bulb horn, finger cymbals. Mounted on the right side of the drum set: a crank ratchet and a mambo cowbell. (http://home.att.net/~davidandlisa.heim/wsb/media/209769/site1043.JPG) Fun show. Lots to do! Last shot - the whole set up, from the front. . . Yea, it is a really nice sounding (and looking) snare. the shell is from RhythmKing, the lugs and strainer are Trick. I have posted pics of the snare before..It does sound sweet.
DrumNut, Gracias...the kit sounds nice too. I never get tired of setting up for a gig and having other folks come up and watch their jaw drop a little. It is fun to play and like I said, sounds great. Easy to set up, easy to mike and great fun to play. DFJC: I'll try to post a review of my pies maybe in a week or two, maybe some sound clips. As I have mentioned, I recently jettisoned my Zildjians (for shame...) in favor of the Istanbuls. They sound great and I am playing everything from Lucinda Williams to Iron Maiden with them. The look is unique and they have simply great all-around sound. Cheers, Bob Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Dead Trooper on May 06, 2007, 08:11 PM LOVE the Roto set Bob. Thanks again. I can imagine for a lot of folks, this might be a dream kit...though a lot of therapy might be needed, too. The sound you get is completely head dependent. To that end, I'll be needing new heads soon and am entertaining rec's for new heads. I've always played remo...CS dots back in the 70's and 80's, pinstripes in the 90's and early 00's. Now I have PS3's on them. I play fiberskyns on my "regular" 5-piece with Rennaisance's on my snares. So, if anyone has any great ideas for more "musical" heads on roto's, I am game. The clear PS3's sound pretty nice though. Again, thanks for the look. Bob Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Gaddabout on May 07, 2007, 09:51 AM DT, Thanks again. Bob I started using Attack/Terry Bozzio heads because they came with a kit I once bought, and I loved them so much I couldn't stop using them. I wonder if the same would hold true for rotos, since Bozzio includes them as part of his regular kit and he tunes his drums so musically. Title: Re: Bart's Percussion / Drum Hybrid Set-up Post by: Bart Elliott on May 07, 2007, 09:56 AM Cool setup! Any chance of seeing a clearer depiction of how you've got that Erskine snare set up with the foot pedal? Also, do you have any issues with sympathetic snare vibrations, given that having the drum set up like that isn't exactly conducive to releasing the snares? You can see/hear how I built and set-up the foot operated Snare drum in the most recent video podcast ... Episode 7 (http://www.drummercafe.com/content/view/113/72/). Title: Re: Show us your ... Just a quick question out of curiosity- the hardware, stands specifically, are those Ludwig as well? I had a few stands of that are- the Atlas and Hercules, they didn't look quite like those. Like I said, just curious, the kit does look very nice though- never really seen a green sparkle much before, cool Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Iamthewalrus on June 02, 2007, 04:52 PM Since this is my "playing out set", I did upgrade to more durable stuff. I had the original flat base cymbal stands, consolette, and a hercules snare stand. But they eventual all broke over time and I repalced them accordingly. I'm not much into the hardware - just the drums. Even Buddy rich said "A tom holder is just a tom holder." Oh the stands are Tama, the tom Holder is the Ludwig ball-joint type, thehihat stand DW, the snare stand is DW. My pedal is also DW.
Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Gaddabout on June 02, 2007, 08:39 PM First, Louderdb, that looks like the stage at Universal City at Universal Studios in LA. That place always gives me vertigo at night with the lights and elevated stage. Where are you really?
Second, I was always fascinated by the Peaveys. Do they still make them? I thought they were out of production. Yours look gorgeous, though. Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: LEX on June 04, 2007, 07:44 AM Even Buddy rich said "A tom holder is just a tom holder." I don't agree with this. A tom holder isn't just a tom holder when it can't hold the tom well, falls over, or breaks from transporting it around. I've found that DW makes the most versatile, most durable, and overall highest quality hardware. Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Iamthewalrus on June 04, 2007, 08:13 AM Oh, and I agree! In the spirit of the conversation BR was having, I think he meant as long as it holds the tom (cymbal - whatever) the way you like it and keeps it in place - it doesn't matter the brand - which is why my '70's Ludwig kit doesn't have 70's Ludwig hardware. I'd rather have it stay in place than to have my tom move every time I hit it because it's being held by a vintage consolette, or lose my cymbal because the L-arm won't stay tight in the Bass drum bracket (unsurprisingly that happened to me more than once - hence the upgrade to my hardware - although this set does have the L arm set up - but I figured out a way to make it work - 5 years now without an incident of L-arm failure). That is not to say that the vintage hardware isn't way cool and couldn't work, it just doesn't work for ME.
Thanks for the reply, Wally Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Dave Heim on June 04, 2007, 08:56 AM Oh, and I agree! Hmmm. . . that's funny. That's exactly why my 70's Ludwig set does have Ludwig hardware! :) Buddy Rich was always looking for new and better stuff. If he were alive today I think he'd be amazed at some of the new hardware advancements out there. And I suspect he'd be using them. Title: Re: Show us your ... I still use it to hold up my 24in. ride. The crome is in rough shape but the stand is still funtional. All my Tama stands look close to new and some are almost as old as the Ludwig. They are a bit more Heavy duty also. I think that looking at Ludwig's hardware these days, they are doing it much better.Regards, Wally Nutty Title: Re: Show us your ... It's a Paiste Accent though, not a splash; it's very thick, sounds like a bell. I bought it as an inside joke with the guys I was in a band with at the time, we had seen a band and the drummer had a 6" or 8" splash, and we'd see him hit it, but could never hear it, so they were like "why don't you get a tiny cymbal that has no point?" Thank you yankeeboy13,It really depends on where I am playing. I may go jam somewhere one afternoon and only take 2 crashes and a ride and Hi Hat. Truthfully, that is all one really needs to play IMHO. If I am recording or playing at home, I use almost all of it because with each cymbal is a different note. When Bart releases the Community solo you should be able to hear all the notes. I used all but two cymbals on that recording. Right now, I have one more cymbal than I have stands since I picked up the 24in. ride. I need one more boom stand and I can set all of them up. If I am playing a maximum exposure type gig, I will take it all. The other problem with taking all of it is stage size. Most stages at clubs are not big enough for all my gear. I just take the essentials and if I leave my gear on a Friday night to come back and play again Saturday night, I take my cymbals home with me 8). Nutty Title: Re: Show us your ... Do the neighbors get nervous when they see you set your drums up in the driveway? :) Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: drumnut1 on July 06, 2007, 09:42 PM Nice score, Mark! Love the finish! The Neighbors have joined us playing and grilling in the Drive way. I throw one about every 3 years here. The police come every time and we turn down to about 95dbs and continue on. We invite the police to come back after their shift. You can legally make noise until 10:00 PM here. We try to invite all the Neighbors, but I'm sure there are ones I missed so they call the police. LOL ::).Do the neighbors get nervous when they see you set your drums up in the driveway? :) Nutty Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Mongrel on July 06, 2007, 10:46 PM I admit I'm partial to Tamas, but seriously that's a sweeeet looking kit! I'm a 'lug guy' and I really think the Starclassic lugs a really a thing of beauty-especially in that brushed nickel finish. The large lugs like you see on DWs and other kits is a reall turn-off for me.
What is the name of the finish? Also, they look like they have metal badges, traditionally the maples had decals ??? Title: Re: Show us your ... I'm a 'lug guy' and I really think the Starclassic lugs a really a thing of beauty-especially in that brushed nickel finish. The large lugs like you see on DWs and other kits is a reall turn-off for me. Hi Mongrel,What is the name of the finish? Also, they look like they have metal badges, traditionally the maples had decals ??? The lugs are a smoke color and the finish was called "Citris" something or other. I will call the store and find out for you when they open. This was a limited addition kit. Yes they have metal badges and so did the Star Classic kit I bought about 5 years ago. The Badge on the one I bought 5 years ago was more bronze looking. I have already noticed some very good changes in the hardware since my kit from 5 years ago was built. There are now locks on everthing. More reinforcement on the weight bearing hardware. I am also excited about the Free Iron Cobra Power Glide DB pedal that I get with buying any Star Classic kit 4 peices or more. That deal is good until September. I have been playing a Gibralter Intruder ll for about 11 years now. I am very interested in comparing. I have heard great things about the Iron Cobra, now I get to find out first hand. I am going to use this kit to play out mostly. You wouldn't know it but this has a wrap finish. It really took me awhile to see that and it looked as good as my Laquer finish. I will keep my Natural Maple Finish at home mostly. They are having a Bikers for Christ weekend at church and they told me that I could bring my kit ;D ;). Which one should I use :o??? That is the question??? Nutty Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Mongrel on July 07, 2007, 09:31 AM A wrap? Very hard to tell that from the pics. It looks like a psychadelic paint job...
Which actually answers the question of which kit to take to the Bikers for Christ gig ;D The new one obviously! Again, nice snag. Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: New York Frank on July 07, 2007, 10:47 AM Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-weet.

Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: drumnut1 on July 07, 2007, 08:28 PM A wrap? Very hard to tell that from the pics. It looks like a psychadelic paint job... Yes, I agree, I will take them to do The Bikers For Christ Gig and probably all gigs. I have a Steam Bent Walnut snare drum being built custom for me that should be in at the end of next week. The Tama Snare sounds great too. I may have a tough time figuring out what snare sounds the best. I just tuned my Tama's up and WOW. They sound Fantastic. I can honestly compare Tama Star Classic Maple and Star Classic Birch now. I will be using them with my band tomorrow after noon so I will hear how they sound and record. The sound was worth the money alone. The psychedelic wrap finish was just a big plus. I won't have to worry to much about ever seeing another kit like mine ;). OH, I added another pic to my original post.Which actually answers the question of which kit to take to the Bikers for Christ gig ;D The new one obviously! Again, nice snag. Post by: Antman on July 12, 2007, 08:17 AM nice!
Have roland developed area sensitive heads yet? I'm still using an old TD-8 from 2001. Are the samples much of an improvement? I'd be using them for toms and kick. Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: PremierMan on July 12, 2007, 08:44 PM yes I believe they are more sensitive, altho I have never found Roland or any other brand that has heads that sound good with brushes ... just my personal opinion
if you haven't seen it before, check out this link: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?ObjectId=659&ParentId=60 should be a video of the TD12 at NAMM Title: Re: Show us your ... Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Nuclear on July 19, 2007, 10:35 PM Here's some pics of the Gretsch but without cymbals. As you can see, the 12" tom and the snare are a little darker blue 'cause they don't get used much, but I set them up anyway. I usually just play a 4 piece with two ride cymbals for boppin' around, but I occasionally add the 12, a crash or two and the old gajate bracket if I need to play rock or latin.
It's a Renown from the first year they hit the market, so it doesn't have the die-cast hoops. The BD is a 20" and really has a nice sound. I'm happy with them, and plan to just spend cash on cymbals and snares for awhile still. Post by: Adam on July 20, 2007, 01:44 PM Why don't you put one of those mouse pads on your snare and give your fingers a workout?
What kind of Gretsch is that? Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: Nuclear on July 20, 2007, 01:58 PM Why don't you put one of those mouse pads on your snare and give your fingers a workout? What kind of Gretsch is that? I can turn over that practice pad and it has the "mousepad" type material on the other side. I usually keep the bouncy side up because the snare is generally much more responsive than the toms with normal heads anyway. It's a Renown from 2001, which is a bit different than the ones today, as I noted in the post above. Title: Re: Show us your ... Post by: k7mto on July 23, 2007, 07:55 PM Hey guys.
