Drummer Cafe Community Forum

I have 6 toms from a Rogers XP8 set that I'm working on tirelessly to improve the sound.  Even though I've tried 4 different kinds of heads, I can't seem to get rid of the series of goofy/undesirable overtones on some of the drums - they just sound sloppy and not tight at all. :-\  I checked the bearing edges on a flat surface and each of the shells has some degree of variation - some are gradual changes, other spots appear to be isolated humps 3-4" in length (these height variations are nearing but still less than 1/16" in the worst spots).  My question is: Would these bearing edge variations be a likely cause of the undesirable tone of these toms?  Before I have the edges recut, should I just send myself back to Drum-Tuning School? ???  Thanks for any thoughts! :)
