I'd also recommend the following book:  "The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary as Taught by Alan Dawson" by John Ramsay.  Check it out on Amazon for a description and reviews, etc.

In a nutshell ... Alan Dawson's approach to Syncopation is about the same as what I have laid out in my article entitled Expanding Stick Control (http://www.drummercafe.com/content/view/13/28/).

Alan would take the rhythms from the Syncopation book and apply the around the drumkit. Each limb takes it's turn playing the rhythm(s) while the other limbs are playing a groove or ostinato.

If you read my article, you can take the same exact approach with the Syncopation book.

If possible, take some lessons with a teacher that uses/understands these methods. If you can't find an instructor, you can contact me about video correspondence lessons.

Thank you Bart, looks like I'll have to work on the Stick Control book too.

Bart

Your artical on Allen dawsom is right on. I got to hang with allen in early 70"s at berklee.

It lossened my ideas up greatly. I learnd how to sing what I play. and inable to play what I hear. Also to think in colors.
You can always make a new way to play sycopation as styles change.

Ive got 50+ ways and still comming up with new stuff.

The Drummers Complete Vucabulary as taught by Allen Dawson by John Ramsay is a great book on allen.

Allen always said "you don't need a new drum book, just a new way to play stick control or syncopation."
