Title: Recommended listening? Latin? Post by: Ziggy on September 26, 2007, 07:26 AM Greetings and salutations gang.
I'm wanting to extend my musical palate and want to experience more latin stuff. I think seeing as I had a very meat-and-potatoes-british-rock-n-pop upbringing as a kid, it's only been the past few years that I've pushed myself to learn about jazz and funk and other styles. I understand that Latin is a really big area in which the drummer might get to fully 'work out'. To start me off are there any key grooves, beats or songs that would get me going? Thanks :) Title: Re: Recommended listening? Latin? Post by: sleepybrIghteyez on September 26, 2007, 07:39 AM I don't listen to enough of it to give specific examples, but WWOZ plays some good stuff on Saturdays. They used to play it all day, but it seems from their current chart the show is from 11:30AM to 2PM CST. You can stream the station over the net by clicking the WWOZ link in my sig. I'm sure you'll get a lot of great suggestions in this thread, but I thought I'd give a shout to my favorite local station for playing this stuff. You may get some extra ideas from listening.
Title: Re: Reccomended listening? Latin? Post by: Drum4JC on September 26, 2007, 10:44 AM I only have a limited exposure to this as well, but I have Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez's Italuba CD and it is great. He has another one out also, I think it's just called Italuba 2. He is on the Modern Drummer 2000 DVD, and the Drum and Bass Day 2002 DVD.
Antonio Sanchez is on the Modern Drummer 2003 DVD and he's phenomenal as well. Poncho Sanchez is a well known conga player that might be interesting to you. You may also go back in time a bit and look for old Tito Puente CD's too. EDIT: Also check out Ignacio Berroa's new CD called Codes. That got a nice write-up in MD not long ago... Title: Re: Recommended listening? Latin? Post by: Big-Skittle on September 27, 2007, 01:47 PM You should check out: Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Potato, Changito, Eddie Palmeri (last name may be spelled wrong), Gypsy Kings, Strunz & Farah (they're more Flaminco but still have strong latin rhythms.) There so much more.
Title: Re: Recommended listening? Latin? Post by: Drumlooney on September 27, 2007, 03:25 PM Pick up anything by Michel Camilo, Irakere, Paquito Guzman, Tito De Gracia, etc. Arturo sandoval has some good latin Jazz stuff, of course all these are recommendations for "trap" drums, if you want to get into all types of percussion stuff the list can go on and on a lot of great suggestions by skittle.
Title: Re: Recommended listening? Latin? Post by: Ziggy on September 28, 2007, 07:43 AM Thanks very much people.
Thats just what I needed, I am familiar with none of these artists, so it's all very exciting. Thats my itunes purchases sorted for this week! Now theres just the marathon task of absorbing it, making sense of it, and then gradually becoming comfortable with playing it! Cheers :) Title: Re: Recommended listening? Latin?
