I just won myself a Sonorphonic kit.
Well I think it is? 1875-1975 Anniversary.

Actually I knew the auction also included a mid 70's 6.5" Black Beauty that needed a little TLC. With that in mind I thought the price was OK: $700US (bear in mind the US dollar is lowly valued these days).

Great find, Chris. I don't know a thing about vintage Sonor drums, but if that Black Beauty is fairly easy to get working, then you've got yourself a steal. I've got a 5" from that era that I love, but I've always wanted a 6.5 as well.

I don't think you paid too much, especially since you are in AU and looks like a bunch of people wanted it also.  They went for what they went for- that's it.  If you want a deal on sonor drums it's like you have to buy a freaking 12 pc it seems.  The little kits go for more dough.

It must have been the ludwig snare that sold you. ;D

9 ply beech.  Those should project really nice and be a sweet rock kick.  Great kit man, especially with the snare.  I think you are going to be surprised.


 much cheaper than an Sq2 and you can pick up phonic orphans all the time.

Let me know if you need some lugs/parts.  I have a quite few.  The legs?  Anything should work with those sig/phonic leg brackets if I recall correctly.

That was the first decent priced kit I've seen on Ebay here in Australia since I got here.
All the other auctions are in the thousands!

Yeah, the snare sealed the deal.
I once owned a mid70's Black Beauty 6.5". In fact I played it on a lot of records.
I sold it a few years after I bought my 20's BB.
But the later model is a great drum, so I'm happy to have one again for a reasonable price.
Phonic-wise, I've been doing the thuddy drum sound for a couple of years now (low tuned G2's), so I might start with single-ply white coated heads and take it from there.
In any case, I'm ready for some mid70's German nostalgia.  ;D

And a Hernia   -  9ply beech!    ;)

Slightly related tangent: I played the 5x14 BB I inherited from my dad (I figured he'd have to die first, but he passed it on this year after deciding he's retired from drumming :-[) for the first time since it became *mine* last night. I remember liking it, but MAN what a nice little drum. Rimshots were powerful and full, cutting through loud guitars with no problem. Low-volume sensitivity was great, and this with a reso head that's been on for years and years. A slightly lower tuning and the drum had all kinds of bottom for its size. By chance, I had a soundmeter with me for checking the levels in the rehearsal space and the levels on my drums (part of a garage conversion project I'm working on) and at 6 inches, the drum was about 6-7 dB louder than my Mapex Phosphor Bronze. POW!

Hope my wife will forgive me, but I'm in love all over again...  ;D

yeah, I love BB's.  Almost bought one in the early 80's- it was indeed a 5 or 5.5 but held off till the early 90's then bought the yammy rip off manu katche model, which to me, sounds pretty much like a BB.

Phonics kill so that kit is definitely going to be "back in black" when it's up and running.  Great score CW.

Hello Gary. Welcome aboard. I recognise you from the mikedolbear forum, I post there under the same handle.

Felix, Gary is a fine custom drum builder, vintage drum enthusiast and refurbisher, and from all accounts a decent guy.

Gary, Felix is a collector of Sonor drums (drums in general), a handy resource for soundproofing solutions, and a recording engineer (I think?) a regular contributor here and by all accounts a decent guy.

The first thing I'm going to need is one of those pesky slotted drum keys.

I probably wont see the kit for up to a week, but I'll report back on condition.
I'm hoping the BB isn't trashed.

Nice score, I think.  Those are some serious drums.  They do sing.  I think you'll be pleased.

I lost my slotted key years ago.  Metal washers, such as one might use on a cymbal stand, work fine. 

The photo wouldnt show up due to something or other. Ive been a Sonor fan forever. The phonic kits inparticular. Would it happen to be that baby blue kit i noticed on the bay?. Many of my favorite recordings (drum sound) has been with players endorsing Sonor drums. Robbie Bachman, Russ Kunkell, etc. There is an identifiable Sonor sound to my ears and its such a sweet sound. Pure, pretty sounding. I love the look of the lugs. There is and has been something about the look of Sonor to me, especially the phonic series.

yeah, the sonor sound is great.  I like Hilites and F3K's alot too (maple and birch respectively) :)  I guess those new Sq2 kits are totally over the top.  But, alas, me no gots that kinda do re mi.

I think Chrisso still has the phonics we've been talking about anways.  They need a maj. overhaul tho'.

Ya, ive been talking to guys who have listened to the SQ2 stuff and the feedback is 110% positive. As you mentioned a guy would have to win the lottery to obtain a kit. Either that or get a second mortgage! :o.

No kidding.  My friend on the other side of town just put in an order for a medium shelled beech SQ2 kit *pant pant pant*

 I can't believe he did it and neither did he but the good nooze is I get to kick it over in a few months.   ;D
