Title: Cheap $30 digital recorder work OK for recording drum practice?
Post by: verve1 on December 29, 2007, 10:30 PM
I was wondering if a $30 mini digital "voice" recorder would work OK for recording practice. Of course the speaker is tiny, but it comes with a USB cable to download to the computer, (which has a pretty good sound system on it). I just want to listen and then probably erase it immediately and I want the process to be simple. Am I missing something on this being a "voice" recorder that would make it not work for this application? It will hold 26 hours and is sound activated.

Why not?  You probably won't get the full dynamic range and perhaps quality of a more expensive recorder.  But if all you want to do is give a quick listen for feel, tempo, form, obvious errors - then sure, it should work just fine.

Yes!

Billy Ward would tell you that anything will work. Recording yourself is one the best, honest and - sigh - painful things you can do to get better.

I've used my Sony stereo cassette walkman to record myself. Works fine for that kind of stuff

I do a good job of live recordings but no matter how expensive your stuff is does not have more value than just listening to yourself play. You can make you better and the band better at the same time. You might even capture something that is Great ;D!!! I would spend the $30 bucks.

Do you already have an IPOD?  You can get recording accessory for many of the MP3 players....
