Drummer's Bible calls it a Soca rhythm.  Check your e-mail for a scan of the page.  Hope it helps!

It's not a Soca ... although the syncopation sounds the same.
Soca is Soul and Calypso combined together; four on the floor Kick Drum.

I would just say it's a Salsa groove ... which is a hybrid in itself ... sort of a generic turn. You can hear how a cascara pattern would work, even though none is being played.

Many latin grooves sound very close, so the identifying factors lie elsewhere, as in the other instruments (eg. bass, brass).

The Zydeco group I'm auditioning for this week does a weird mix of Cajun, Zydeco, Tex-Mex and stuff that reminds me of Benny Goodman/Krupa Sing Sing Sing...(oh, oh...showing my age.....60 today!....Cumpleaños Feliz....)

Looks like fun to me. I just got turned down for a group by their agent because of my age. I'm curious to see what happens. Good luck!  ;)  If you get into that group let us know. I'm going to throw it back into that agents face. We're the same age....  ;D

By the way... although this tune may have been redone by voodoo daddy, I have to plug in here that what made it popular for me is when Louis Prima did it as "King Louis" in the Jungle Book Movie which is where is originally came from.

Definately, Louis Prima - 1967 in the Jungle Book.  That was great stuff. 

I say it's a rock drummer adapting as best he can. Sounds fine. The challenges of combining multiple latin percussion parts on a drumset, and often at high volume, is a task that has faced all of us ever since the Leader said, "Hey! Let's Play Black Magic Woman!"

The Jungle Book rendition of the tune is interesting: there are some obvious edits (likely to match screen time?) and a rhythm track that sounded to me like several guys, which makes sense for a soundtrack of that era. I had to play it in a cabaret show and I enjoyed studying it much more than butchering it. Which I did.
