Title: Six Marimbas - Steve Reich Post by: Adam's Dad on March 13, 2008, 12:36 PM Has anyone performed Steve Reich, Six Marimbas? I am interested in the logistics of this work. I've seen a few of the YouTube vids and would like to know how many instruments are needed. It appears that some performances use only one of two instruments.
I'm trying to program this piece with the local Community College and would like to hear from anyone with some experience (even if you just attended a performance). Also, what level of musician would be required? I'm thinking of using some of the wind players that are rhythmically capable. Shoot my an e-mail and when I am in my office on Monday, I can take a look at the score.

Each marimba player has their own section paired with another marimba and both play out the minimalistic sections. Each section is played a number of times depending on the players. The two or three who play together have to keep eye contact with each other to make sure each knows the cues for diminuendos and fading. Contains 71 patterns. Written with 5 flats. Parts 3,4, and 5 read in both treble and bass clef. Rhythm made up of quarter and eighth notes. Players 4 and 5 change patterns most often. Very hard to read manuscript. Everyone reads from a score. Takes some concentration. |
