Title: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on April 02, 2008, 09:49 AM Anyone going to the Chicago Drum Show (http://www.chicagodrumshow.com/) this year?
I'm hoping to go this year and do some reporting for the Drummer Cafe. If it works out, and I can get permission, I'm going to be able to provide some video and pictures here at the Drummer Cafe as the day unfolds. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Dave Heim on April 02, 2008, 11:40 AM I'm hoping to make it this year.

Title: Re: Clinic versus Master Class Post by: Bart Elliott on April 03, 2008, 05:20 PM Regarding the clinics, what is the difference between a clinic and a master class? and why on different days?
It's not uncommon for the clinician/artist to totally ignore the labels and/or schedule, which can be frustrating or a real bonus. If you were expecting a master class and the artist just plays and talks, then that is a clinic ... and you get no personal help or critique. The opposite can be true as well if you were expecting a clinic but got a master class. Most people would probably prefer a more intimate instructional situation with the artist over just sitting in the crowd. Clinics can still have interaction, but the master class was originally created as a personal lesson with a number of individuals in front of a group of people. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: drumeister on April 19, 2008, 08:47 AM I will be attending as well. We will actually have a booth there for the 1st time and we are searching the chain for really cool vintage or custom gear to display.
Should be a great time. We should all hang and talk......oh I don't know.....DRUMS? Glenn Noyes Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on April 19, 2008, 09:40 AM Glenn,
Sorry I don't recognize your name, which begs me to ask who you represent and/or what will the name be on your booth? It will help us find you! Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Jim R. on April 24, 2008, 02:53 PM Do tickets have to be paid in advance for entry? What about for the Master classes? It's $25 and they only allow 20 or 25 people in the class. Do these fill up quick?

Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on April 25, 2008, 07:22 AM Guitar Center Ah ... now I know who you are Glenn; you are an acquaintance of Josh Moscov who told me about you. Welcome to the Drummer Cafe! I got my media pass from Rob, so I'm good to go! Bobhead, I believe that you can purchase tickets at the door. Masterclasses have limited space, so that would probably have to be purchased in advance. If there is room in a masterclass, you may be able to purchase a ticket then. For example, as of right now, Billy Ward only has 8 people signed up for his class. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on April 27, 2008, 08:57 AM I need to make a correction ...
In the case of Billy Ward's masterclass ... they are ONLY allowing 8 individuals ... and there was already 4 people signed up as of last week. If you are going to attend a masterclass, you need to get it on it! Be sure to look for me at the show ... I'll have a Drummer Cafe T-shirt on (of course) and will be conducting interviews and such on both Saturday & Sunday. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Jim R. on April 28, 2008, 09:44 AM I just got the next to last spot for B. Ward's Master Class!
see ya there. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Hannah Ford on April 28, 2008, 11:34 PM I will be attending as well. See you in a couple of weeks. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Billy Ward on May 07, 2008, 06:02 PM Hey folks - because of the limitations of only 8 students per class. I am performing TWO masterclasses. (yes, I will be tired.. :D)
These will be teaching classes - not "look what I can do". They may already be sold out, but I wanted to give you the heads up. Both classes are on Saturday morning. Email Rob Cook at Rebeats if you are interested. My clinic at Chicago is sandwiched between two esteemed jazz players, Matt Wilson and Cindy Blackman, so I'm going to perform mostly pop stuff. I'm the tuna salad in the sandwich! :D Also, Bart - MAn!!!! I love your Cafe TV. The cymbal piece was lovely. You are incredible. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on May 08, 2008, 09:59 AM Also, Bart - MAn!!!! I love your Cafe TV. The cymbal piece was lovely. You are incredible. You are very kind ... thanks Billy. I'm looking forward to seeing you and many others from the drumming community at the Chicago Drum Show. Why do I get the feeling there's not going to be enough hours in the day?! Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: riot2003 on May 14, 2008, 02:59 PM I know you have to sign up for the masterclasses, do you have to do the same for the clinics or are they open to anyone who wanders by? I'm excited about the show, its my first!
Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on May 16, 2008, 07:59 AM If any Drummer Cafe members are going to be at the show tomorrow and Sunday ... let me know by posting here. I'd love to connect with some of you if possible.
I'm in Milwaukee right now but will be at the show both days. I'll be covering for the show for DCTV and the Drummer Cafe. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: riot2003 on May 16, 2008, 08:02 AM I'll be there all day Sunday! I'm so excited. Also picking up a used DW Collectors Series kit that day!!!
Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on May 16, 2008, 08:04 AM Be sure to look for me while you are at the show. I'll be the tall, thin guy with the Drummer Cafe T-shirt on. ;D

Wish I could be there, maybe when there's one in the NY area we can all get together then! Can't wait for Bart's recap on DCTV! Title: Chicago Drum Show - Saturday Post by: Bart Elliott on May 17, 2008, 06:49 PM Here's a slide show (photos from today) which I'll be updating later today and tomorrow.
http://www.drummercafe.com/media/slideshow/DrummerCafe.swf I've got video from the Bob Moses and Carmine Appice clinics, plus an interview with Bermuda. I'll be doing more interviews tomorrow and hope to video the Cindy Blackman clinic. I missed Billy Ward but hope to see him tomorrow as well. Should have some good interviews with a number of drum-makers and manufactures; quite a few agreed to allow me to interview them. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: New York Frank on May 17, 2008, 09:50 PM Great shots, Bart. Thanks for posting.
Hi Hannah Montana. I wish I was there. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Hannah Ford on May 18, 2008, 11:12 AM I didn't get to spend as much time there as I would have liked. I did however get to see Bart, meet Bermuda and Dave Heim....What a great group of guys and a great representation of the class of our DC family.
I'm really proud to be associated with the Drummer Cafe! Hannah Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Jim R. on May 18, 2008, 03:46 PM Here's a link to a slideshow from the drum show. (I could get it to show up here.)
If was a great time going to the show for the first time. It was also great to meet Bart and Dave Heim. I went by the MaxHead booth but missed Hannah. The master class with Billy Ward was very beneficial, he was very helpful to everyone there, I believe. Bob Moses and Carmine Appice had good clinics as well. I wish I could've been there today to see the other clinics. http://good-times.webshots.com/slideshow/563472448RZocVg (http://good-times.webshots.com/slideshow/563472448RZocVg) Thanks for putting me in your slideshow Bart, and after further reinforcemnt from you and Dave, I've changed my moniker from Bobhead to Jim R. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Dave Heim on May 18, 2008, 06:37 PM Had a great time at the Chicago Show on Saturday. Hung with Bart and Bermuda and Jim R for a while. Chatted with Hannah and her dad a bit. Spent some time catching up and reminiscing with Bill Ludwig III (B3), and some of the other guys from Ludwig. Had a few nice conversations with Mike Dorfman, Chris, and JT from Trick Drums. Did quite a bit of trick-or-treating at the vendor booths. Caught a couple of good clinics (Bob Moses and Carmine). And came away very tired by the time they closed up at 5pm.
I had a gig Saturday night and Bart came out and caught the show. And for those of you who wonder how he keeps the Cafe so fresh and up to date. . . his laptop computer was ever-present and humming every spare minute - head bobbing in time to the music while working the site. Oh, and I finally picked up an early 70's 5x14 no-tint Vistalite snare. I'd been trolling all the usual places for about a year and hadn't found one I liked. I got into the show about 2 hours early on a VIP pass and found the drum within an hour while the exhibitors were setting up. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on May 18, 2008, 09:53 PM Another great day at the Chicago Drum Show. I've got video footage from Billy Ward and Cindy Blackman clinics. Video interviews with Bill Ludwig III (B3), Curt Waltrip (Joyful Noise Drum Company), Steve Westphal (Vaughncraft Percussion), Ron Fink, and many, many others!
I've added some additional photos from today to the current slideshow. Video footage (interviews and clinics) coming soon once I have some time (?) to edit. I unfortunately didn't win anything from the raffle; really wanted one of those Joyful Noise Snare Drums! ;D Steve Westphal of Vaughncraft Percussion gave me a VERY nice gift ... a Vaughncraft Tambourine! More on that later; I'll be reviewing it. Both Billy Ward and Cindy Blackman played the tail-ends off today! I'll be sharing footage from their clinics on DCTV very soon! Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Billy Ward on May 18, 2008, 11:26 PM Hi Bart - I just got home and after a small snack am surfing! :D
I can't express the warmth I feel in my heart when I see you. I love the CafeTV and I'm so glad we got to say hello and have a hug! Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Jim R. on May 19, 2008, 09:34 AM I really wanted one of those Joyful Noise snares also, I played on all of the ones they had set up, the nickel plated ones really impressed me. I also fell in love with the UFIP cymbals. I really want one. :)

Glad you captured it Bart! Again, it was great to meet you and other DC members. Since I'm new hear if was cool to meet people from here so quickly. The show came at a great time. It was very memorable for me thanks to you and Dave and of course the chance to do a class with Billy Ward...Awesome! Everyone was so friendly at this show. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Dave Heim on May 19, 2008, 09:44 AM Hey Jim -
+1 on that Joyful Noise stuff. Man, those are some nice drums. That engraved snare you posted is gorgeous. And it looked even better in person! And the throw off is quite clever & innovative! Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Hannah Ford on May 19, 2008, 12:52 PM Hi Bart - I just got home and after a small snack am surfing! :D I can't express the warmth I feel in my heart when I see you. I love the CafeTV and I'm so glad we got to say hello and have a hug! Hey Billy, Dad told me he ran into you in the parking lot while I was parking the car. I looked around before we left but couldn't find you. Sorry I missed you this time. I'm sure our paths will cross again soon. Take care and thanks for continuing to share your talent and your knowledge with us. Hannah Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: riot2003 on May 19, 2008, 02:17 PM Did anyone else catch the Cindy Blackman Clinic? It blew my mind. That woman is amazing and so in touch with reality. Not to mention how skilled she is and her intense knowledge of the rich history of jazz drumming. A real treat.
The show was awesome, even my guitar player liked it. heh. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Chip71 on May 19, 2008, 02:33 PM Thanks for the slide show Bart. I seen that 1960's Whitehall set called "White Tiger" and about dropped my teeth. I have a '60's Slingerland set made about the same time. The color for that set was called "Tiger Eye" and they're very close in color. Only someone as old as me would remember those colors. ;D
Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: Bart Elliott on May 23, 2008, 01:03 AM Sorry for the delay in getting my report done from the Chicago show. I've been messing with the video, trying to edit and repair dropped frames in the footage. >:( I have over 3 hours of video footage, so as you can imagine ... it's taking awhile.
I hope to have a chunk of it done and available on DCTV by this weekend; no promises. With gigs, sessions and family ... well, there's only so much time available. Thanks for your patience! Title: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show - video Post by: Bart Elliott on May 26, 2008, 09:59 PM Okay ... I've got a short video montage from the Chicago Drum Show, now featured on DCTV this week. I'm also showing several interviews this week; William F. Ludwig III (aka B3), Curt Waltrip - Joyful Noise Drum Company, and Steve Westphal - Vaughncraft Percussion. Clinic clips this week include Bob Moses and Carmine Appice. VIP Members can view all of the clinic footage I shot of Bob Moses (http://www.drummercafe.com/content/view/216/40/) (over 23 minutes) and Carmine Appice (http://www.drummercafe.com/content/view/217/40/) (over 13 minutes).
In the upcoming weeks I'll be sharing my interview with Bermuda Schwartz, Eric Sooy - Drum Foundry, Andy Foote - Drum Supply House, ThunderEcho Drums - Trash Kat, Max Heads, Ron Fink, Rock City Drum Company ... plus previews from the Cindy Blackman and Billy Ward clinics. Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: andy D on June 01, 2008, 11:37 AM Hi Bart

This year was my second trip to the chicago drum show, and it completely blew my mind! Cindy's clinic was sensationally good, and I really enjoyed Billy Wards too. I thought Chip Ritter and Carmine did really entertaining clinics. There was such a huge range of great stuff there too, I could have spent another 2 days going through everything!
Jim Title: Re: 18th Annual Chicago Drum Show Post by: riot2003 on June 02, 2008, 02:05 PM I didn't get to show up until Sunday afternoon :( I did see Cindy's clinic and it blew my mind!
Title: Chicago Drum Show ... final report Post by: Bart Elliott on June 04, 2008, 07:48 AM Now airing on DCTV (http://www.drummercafe.tv) ... Part 2 of my report on the Chicago Drum Show.
My apologies for some of the clicks and burps in the video & audio; I ran into some technical difficulties with the tape. I've spent MANY hours editing, trying to heal wounds as much as possible. The interview with Bermuda is over 20 minutes long for example ... so when there's a video/audio glitches occurring, on average, every second ... well, you do that math. :-\ Lot's of editing. I could do more, but I had to stop. Title: 2008 Chicago Drum Show - the drumsmith.com pictorial Post by: Dunnett on June 05, 2008, 09:54 AM For Bart and our friends at Drummer Cafe - Enjoy!
