Title: Help me pick my new kit?! Post by: riot2003 on May 05, 2008, 03:49 PM Hey everyone,
I'm planning on buying a new set SOOOON! And I'd love some input from you fellow DCer's. I currently am playing an old Birch Pearl Export, which (I think many will agree) has GREAT sound for the price, especially if its tuned up right. BUT, I'm heading out on the road this summer and looking to take a new kit with me. I play fast and hard, but not your in-a-can metal, more experimental and tonal conscious than that. I'm almost convinced that I'm going to go with a maple kit. I really like the Pearls so I was thinking about going with a sessions. I've seen a lot of used Tama SC's for a decent price lately too. Any one have experience with ddrums or PDP's? Looking for a 4 or 5 piece with standard sized bass drum, 13/14 and 16 or 13/14, 16, and 18 toms and I'm looking to spend around 1000-1500 on shells alone. Any input is welcome! Thanks! That aside, Gretsch makes some good maple drums for a reasonable price. Look into their Catalina and Renown series. Renown being the higher end of the two. I don't have personal experience with DDrum, but I know that my local GC couldn't keep them on the shelves when they first came out. PDP, a friend of mine has some. Maple shells of course, bass drum sounded generally punchy. Probably ok if you know how to tune them, but I'm not the world's biggest fan of DW stuff... Title: Re: Help me pick my new kit?! Just picked up my new kit this weekend (drumroll please) A 2000 DW Collector's series for only $1200!!! I'm so excited. It sounds like a dream. I'm throwing new heads on next week and starting to gig with it immediately. I feel like a proud new father. Title: Re: Help me pick my new kit?! Post by: metalshredder on May 22, 2008, 08:27 AM Have you got cases or good bags for them? Something to think about early on, before something happens to them. I know you'd be sick to your stomach if something scratched or chipped your new beauties! I've seen lots of different ones advertised, but I think the best bags I've seen are the Protection Racket. Nice good padding and sort of a wool inner liner, kinda like a wool buffer! Felt like good stuff to me!

I just called my manager buddy at GC yesterday and priced out a set of SKB hard cases for them. I'll be getting them in a few weeks. I'm heading out on the road for 2 months this summer, I can't have those beauties rolling around the trailer with anything less for protection. Thanks for the input!
