Title: snare setting off tom
Post by: Jennifer on June 11, 2008, 04:32 PM
Hey Guys,
My snare is setting off my 10in tom when I play making the snare sound like a tom with a snap.  I just changed the top heads on the entire kit when it happened.  I moved it around a bit and changed the tuning but still the same booming every time I hit.
    Suggestions.
Jennifer

A snare will sound like that if you didn't turn the wires on. (Lever on/up position) Or the snare wires may be adjusted too loose to start with. Turn screw to tighten wires, but not too tight. Just a little, turn wires on and try it. Repeat the process if needed. Also check the tension of the bottom snare head. Make sure the bottom head and the wires aren't too tight. That will choke the action of the wires, will sound like your hitting a box. Remove the tom, hit the snare. You need to determine if the problem is with the snare or the tom.  ;)

You'll need to tune the tom or the snare to a different pitch as you're getting sympathetic vibration.

Tightening the head worked.  Thanks.
I appreciate your suggestions.  The snare was fine on its own and I had already tightened the thing more that usual but this time it needed even more.  Much more that any of the other heads I have used.

I had the same problem with my 12" tom. I had to slightly tuned the tom tom higher and it worked! :)
I don't like the snare tuned too high.

I have never been a great drum tuner (even though I've been at this game for 30+ years).  Sympathetic vibrations are the bane of my existence. Tral and error, re-tune, de-tune, sigh.

If you haven't, you should really check out the various stuff Bob Gatzen has put online (as well as his DVD). I wouldn't call myself an expert tuner, but that really helped demystify a lot for me.
