Post by: bloody0sabbath73 on February 16, 2003, 09:42 AM
when i hit my highest tom it rings my snare drum. I already have a sponge thats taped onto my snare head but i still get that annoying ringing noise. Any suggestions?

Do a search on the Cafe.  We have discussed this many times.

Its called 'sympathetic buzz' (or ring) and it occurs when two or more drums are tuned at very similar frequencies to one another.

Remove the sponge from your snare for a start, then tune one of the offending drums up or down slightly to reduce the amount of buzz. You wont get rid of it entirely, and it will be very noticeable the first time you step into a jam with a bass player.

tune the bottom head to a higher pitch, or higher tension than the top/batter head.

I used to be so afraid of ringy drums.   I use to deaden my drums to the point that they had no life.  I now have seen the light.  Harness that ring and make it sing.  There are great resources on the web for tuning drums.  Keep'em open let those puppies breathe.
