Title: Good recording tech. Post by: D.W.7000 on November 30, 2003, 11:49 AM Well i think my dad is getting me the new Boss Br-864 Recording machine, and i want to know what might be some good recording tech? Like weather its how you mic your drums and where?, or something you could do on the machine, Or finally what kinda of mics do you find the best of the best? Give me ideas. Thank You!
Title: Good recording tech. Post by: 563 on December 01, 2003, 12:10 PM Experimentation is the heart of any good recording. Mic placement is an abstract art. You'll only know the best way to mic your kit in the room its in by putting mics on stands and moving 'em around.
As for what kind of mics, dynamics are usually used for drums, with small diaphragm condensors as overheads for cymbals. But that doesnt mean thats the best way. Just the norm. Again, experimentation is key. My personal fave for minimal kit mic'ing is a dynamic on the kick (usually my AKG D1000), and either a single large dia. condensor on top (usually the Oktava MK319) or a pair of smalls (usually the AKG C1000). Im prone to preferring condensors over dynamics because of the extended frequency response and general openness of character. But on kick drums I like the natural compression a dynamic gives. |
