Any knowledge out there about the Polynesian log drums used for traditional dance rhythms? They look like a hollow log, varying in length from maybe 18" long to 3 feet with a slit cut from one end to the other.
Sounds and looks like a huge jam block, but deep and rich, played with a fat stick. I asked around a couple of music shops (Kuai) but was told they are all hand made and passed along within the community (of islanders).
Would imagine they are made of a tropical hardwood now native to the island of origin. Are both ends closed? What affects the pitch,...length...slit...wall thickness?
It would be another fun project I don't have time for
