i saw this video on drummerworld.com with Dennis Chambers playing a beat and he suddenly plays this incredibly fast tom fill with ONE HAND! Shocked

i almost wanted to burn my sticks after seeing him do that

Could anyone explain how one can gain such mobility on the kit?

see the video at http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/Dennischambers2.html

dennis is simply playing doubles between his hand and foot. he is moving his hand around from drum to drum and he does have ridiculous chops, but all it really is are double stroke rolls between his hand and foot. getting good doubles with your foot can be pretty tricky though. one popular method is to sort of slide your foot up the pedal after one stroke, thus pushing the pedal back to the drum and creating a second stroke. hope this helps. I am not going to say it is easy, because it isnt, but I will say I have seen him do much more difficult stuff than that fill. Like what was said above, all he is doing is alternating doubles with hand and foot. Start between the snare and bass at a slower speed, get comfortable with a quicker tempo, and then start to move your left (or right) hand around the kit. Pretty soon you will be able to do it...with practice!

Vinnie does it too - I think he calls it "glancing". Check him out on the Buddy Rich concert when he is playing with Gadd and Weckl. He pulls off a sick version of it plus some other one-handed miracles.

I saw Dennis in clinic. He did a very intense solo and was not breathing hard at all. He bases a lot of his endurance on correct breathing - not as easy as you would think. Play the hardest song you know and check out your breathing at the end.

Vinnie, however, is not a freak of nature.  He's simply not from our world!

You should see the first tape in that series. Chambers, Bellson and Bissonette - you can probably guess who gets slayed in THAT trio!

another thing that both vinnie and dennis do while playing the hand/foot doubles is break the doubles. in other words the first note of the double is on one tom and the second is on another tom...this adds to the illusion that it is a one handed roll.....very cool

I saw a solo he did on a video (somewhere). He simply did a bassdrum roll while he mucked around wiping his brow and playing airoplane with his sticks (try it). To finish it he did a crazy roll around the kit at lightening speed. Incredible. Grin

Vinnie got that insane RH-LF-LH-RF.
That's something to practice.
I got a pretty fast foot Roll Eyes and the way I developed it was by:
1. Six in hands, two in bass drum.
2. Four in hands, two in bass drum.
3. Two in hands, two in bass drum.
4. One in the hand, two in bass drum.
5. One in the hand, one in the bass drum.

Start slow and at first try without a metronom, just going up and down in tempo.

I agree Vinnie can't come from this planet!!
