Anyone planning to go to New Orleans Jazz Fest? It runs the last week in April into early May. I've never been but I saw the 2002 festival on TV recently and loved it  I believe Bernard "pretty" Purdie plays there, among other great musicians. If you've never been, try and go  Avoid the main stage areas unless there are bands you really want to see, because they are packed. Plus, I find the caliber of the lesser known jazz oriented bands on the smaller stages very good. I try to go at least one weekend, but when I started in 1988, they had about 50,000 people over the course of the whole week. Now they are averaging over 100,000 people a day! The problem is the facilities haven't expanded at all  I saw Dave Matthews Band 5 years or so ago and there were 90,000 people at the Ray Ban Stage  The best thing about JazzFest is the late night jam sessions that pop up in the clubs. Tipitina's is famous for some seriously smokin' jams after hours. NOLA is the home of the Marseilles(Sp?) family, Kenwood Dennard, Dr. John, the list goes on. Jimmy Buffett is from Mobile, a mere 90 miles down I-10, and has been known to frequent the bars in the area during the festivities. I love JazzFest, if it isn't obvious. Some of my most memorable times in life are connected to that place. I could go on and on........ |

If my move to the area is completed by then, I will DEFINITELY be there. I saw the schedule for last year's and this year's. WOW. It's hard to imagine so much good music in one place. Hope I'm in Lousiana in time!

Paul, if you don't make the wedding we should at least hook up at the festival. Maybe meet and watch a drummer we are both in awe of or something. I can't wait until they post the schedule. I'm sure I won't be disappointed judging from past years lineups.

Just look for the guy with the grey hair, grey beard, a lovely woman at his side (my wife of almost 30 years) and obviously, a Drummer Cafe tee-shirt! I'm hoping to be there, I think we'll be moved by that time. It looks like a total blast. I'll keep my eyes open for an Drummer Cafe people. |

Bearded guys are still in the minority (especially cool old hippie guys) I had my hair super long for years and years and had to get it cut for a job a couple of years ago. Then it happened..... I realized I liked my hair shorter, easier to take care of, not as HOT in the summer (especially now that I'll be in Louisiana during the summer). Hope to be at the fest and hope to see you there. I'll try to be exhibiting a "cool, unique, and non-conformist" attitude  |
