Is it just me, or do the little nylon bushings/washers music stores sell for lug washers seem extremely over priced? Shocked Has anyone found a cheaper way. I thought Lowes or Home Depot would have something as a substitute, but I have found nothing yet. If you know of something cheaper that works as well, please inform.... Thanks Cool

Good question.  There's a Lowes store near me that has a good selection of hardware, so I think I'll check for these washers.  I bought some from Guitar Center and my complaint is that they (don't remember which brand) are a bit too soft.  It's only a concern on my snare since I tighten the heads on this drum fairly tight.  If I find a source I'll let you know.

I found them at a hardware store for 3 cents each.  Your local electronic supply house will also have them.  The ones at the electronic supply will also have a small shoulder in the center.  These are used as an insulating connector and are hard enough for the high tension you use on the snare.

If you use the nylon ones it will have a little give and the tuning rods will not loosen as easily.  At least thats the plan.

I have these nylon washers on one of my snares (a wood Baltimore Drums 6x13) and i always wondered why.  Maybe another reason for them is to eliminate metal-to-metal contact between the rods and hoops to maybe change the sound or overtones ever so slightly ... shoot, i don't know, just thinking too hard i guess  Roll Eyes .

They also make the process of tuning much smoother, especially at high tension.

NO RUST. I play on the beach, so any metal to metal contact nas a problem of rust. Nylon is the only thing to use as far as I am concerned.
