Have some of you been around to experience the gradual acceptance of drums in the church? I don't know what it's been like in the states, but I grew up playing the drums at my church in Alberta, Canada (late 80's, 90's). At first I was only allowed to play the snare drum, quietly flamming and rolling along to the hymns. And as "praise songs" became more prevalent, we started a worship band, and I was only allowed to have a very small and minimal kit, and I wasn't suppossed to hit the snare drum - only crosstick hits. Finally, at some point, I was allowed to have a full set, play behind the plastic thing, and there were sound checks and everything (for the youth service!). Now, I think pretty much every church has a worship team band. It was interesting to see it grow. I'm now a proud apostate and athiest, but I still enjoy the CCM music of my youth (Whiteheart, baby!)

hey lee, i think our generation has definitely seen the most changes in praise/worship music. for my church, it was a big deal. i remember being in Jr. high, and the only thing we were allowed were acoustic guitars, pianos, the organ, and the tamborine. they made a point of that one. not even a congo! then as the older deacons "retired" and our relatively younger parents moved up the ranks and allowed us more leniency, things started to change. as i graduated from high school, leaving my youth group's praise and worship team of 9 members, complete with two guitarists, bassist, drummer, 3 singers, and a keyboardist, became clear of how times certainly did and still are a changin'. and i'll see your "Whiteheart", and raise you a "Mad at the World"...  |

I'm now a proud apostate and atheist, but I still enjoy the CCM music of my youth (Whiteheart, baby!)

Rick Florian? Wow! I had posters of him (and the band) up on my wall as a kid. That's cool. He became a realtor? Interesting. I wonder if he's still involved in any music projects.

Yes, he's still involved in doing vocal tracks for various studio projects around town. He's a good guy. |

This thread got me wondering....do you know Rick Altizer, who's based out of Nashville? He wrote the song, "She Said Yes," about the girl who professed her faith before becoming one of the Columbine victims. He played at the church next door to my church and my buddy's P&W band backed him up. Great time!

I play most Sunday mornings at First United Methodist in Waco, TX. Looks like Texas has a lot of entries...curious statistical anomoly?

This Sunday is my first Sunday playing a full drum set with this group. (I've played congas and bongos twice before)

I went to a new church this past Sunday called Jubilee in Milpitas,Ca. They had a really great band that just slammed. I've never experienced that before. It made being at church so enjoyable I was so amped and happy to be there. All I have to say is I wanna play in drums in church now.

I teach percussion at a music and worship arts school in Memphis called VISIBLE SCHOOL. It's a college-level program and we have about 7 drummers this year. The school has several different certification tracks from music ministry to music buiness to audio.
