I am a first time poster here so i will introduce myself..Hi, i'm Mike Pilcher (which the username kinda gives away) I have been playing the drums just over a year now, I play "The world's most popular beginners kit": CB Drums. Nice kit to begin on at a decent price.

Together with some friends, we have formed a band, none of us have been playing our instruments for longer than 2 years, but we feel we have good potential. (Our rhythm guitarist is grade 4 after just 2 years) We have on average a band practise every week but because we are only 15/16 we are young. We are hoping to play at an open night at a local pub. Have anyone had any experiences at 'open nights', what are they like?

How should we pre-pare? some people will think we are too young and inexperienced to play in a pub but when do you know it is the right time to play your first gig. This topic is basically for young drummers, who have started a band and what help pre-paring for a gig.

Hi! I'd like to know if you cover tunes or play your own music. If you are a cover band, your age shouldn't be a problem as long as you can play the songs well. The fact that you're young shouldn't matter even if you play your own music, but I find that young, inexperienced bands usually don't write nice songs.

the right time to play a gig is when you have a set and are comfortable with it.  so be it covers or orginals, once you have it together, do a rough tape and talk to local venues, coffee shops, all ages places, etc.  thats all there is to it.

We are currently covering a few songs to get used to playing together and we will probably play a few covers but we are writing our own material, and the guitarist, dare i say it has written some amazing riffs. They aren't complete yet because every practise the guiatrist changes something so fitting drums to an ever changing song is pretty hard.

First of all Mike - slap down that guitar player of your's!!!
Secondly, like Peter Jeffrey said, you're first gig is for having a blast playing together, so don't put any pressure on yourself. As far as your age goes, I played my first cover gig at 15, and I'm still doing it now at 29, so I must be doing SOMETHING right!

ha, yeah I had my first real, money paying pub gig about a month ago.  From what I can tell, and from the mildly disenchanted attitude of the more experinced bands we played with your first gig is always the best.  We had all our friends show up - giving us a larger, more attentive crowd than the headliners and were the only band asked to play an encore (although time restrictions didn't allow it).  Actually, almost everyone commented that they thought we were better than the other bands who played - (at least we were good enough for the promoter to ask us back again).  Admittedly the other bands were tragically generic in my opinion....

In terms of preparing for it - don't know if you'd want to but we practised everyday for about 5 days or so leading up to it.  Repetition pays off...just went through our 45min set once or twice each time.

Were a young 17/18 year old band as well although we really only play originals.

"but I find that young, inexperienced bands usually don't write nice songs. "

Seeing I'm the songwriter I would like to prove you wrong somehow...
