Next time you're practicing and working on solo stuff, try thinking of your bass drum as a very large tom, and incorporate it into your playing accordingly.

For example, do "call and response," playing patterns first on snare or tom and then on bass drum.  Other ideas will come to you quickly.

Listen to "Toad" off of Cream's "Wheels of Fire".

Steady bass fills, mixed fills between toms and bass drums, triplets between bass drums and tom.  You can pick up a lot from this since it's a solo and you don't have those other guys in the way so you can hear the drums really well!

The absolute best double bass and tom fills are the ones of Mike Portnoy.  And they arent even that tricky to learn, which is why i think they are soo good.   Start with quads,  2 bass, 2 toms.  Faster and faster.  Then try 4 toms, 2 bass.   Or 4 toms 4 bass.   just basic rolls back and forth from the bass and the toms.   They sound pretty sweet.   Good Luck man!

I agree with thinking of the bass as a large tom..

The best thing is to take some fills that your use to doing, and start moving them around.

So...  Say you go RLRL RLRL RLRL RLRL moving around.  Try to go RLBB RLBB RLBB etc.  Then try putting the Bass note into new positions.  Also dont be afriad to let the bass drum hit when your hands are.  I know a lot of new drummers when they do fills their bass just falls out completely.  Just experiment and you'll come up with some neat stuff.   Smiley
