Here is a photo I ran across of ZZ TOP. What is that thing wrapped around his drum set? And what's that dish thing between his bass drums?

Looks to be a North tom-tom.
Is Tama making those now?
Perhaps it's an old North tom, but finished like the rest of the kit.

It's all a part of a visual appeal thing ... none of it actually works.  If the drums aren't triggered, they're synched.    Undecided

Nah, Staccattos had that "semi-folded" (I don't know how to really describe it) upped edge.

Frank often has odd/peculiar gear/drums on his kit.

What are you talking about?!

Have you seen and played on a set of North drums? They have complete kits made to look just like the tom in the picture. It's single-headed tom toms.

Sure it's visual ... but to say it doesn't work? Love ya man, but you need to do some research before you make blanket statements like that! We're talking about ZZ Top here ... not the Backstreet Boys.

Hey- that's pretty funny- In order to be able to keep his two bass drums so far apart, it looks like he has 2 double pedals and is playing on the slave pedel of each!

Hmm. That's a very interesting concept. Hadn't thought about that but I bet it would work well especially in some 'monster kit' solutions.

I couldn't see from this pic how you could tell but it could be the case. I will say that I have seen some double bass drum players set their drums at least this far apart. I could never function that way but there are players that can.

Also regarding the 'North' style drum: If you look closely there is a small silver area in the middle of the horn resembles the inner cone of a megaphone. My call on this is that it is designed similar to a North drum, but is actually a custom drum made by the manufacturer (Tama?) just for Frank. ZZ Top is known for their 'big as Texas' over the top stage looks. This fits right in, whether functional for music reasons - or not.

*BTW: I know many groups are using tracks to simulate album quality. Although possible, I doubt ZZ Top is one of them.

first let me say that I saw "the top" a few years ago, and they just don't seem like the type to over dub tracks live.

these are north drums, and THat's what I think he's got there.  It may just be modified.

Now that's what I call strange, but "Cool". You don't walk into a club just any night and see a kit like that.Do they sound as coll as they look?
I would think you can check them out on a site called North Drums. If I'm wrong, please list a site name to locate them. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure they don't make them anymore.  If you do a search you can find some enthusiast sites though, and they're on ebay from time to time.

When I saw them in concert the set he had looked like the 2nd pic JonE posted. It was slighty different but it had the really long toms and all.My brother in law who gets two free tickets for one show every time they tours has seen them like 10 + plues times and has said Frank's drum set is always crazy.

After a little "Googling" I found this quote from an interview with Frank Beard where he is confirming the use of the "slave pedal as main pedal" idea for this set.

It's about half way down this interview under the question beginning "Your drum set for the XXX tour"... http://www.tama.com/artists/interview.asp?ID=3

so sorry ... forgot the [sarcasm][/sarcasm] tags ...  Smiley

(I sure do miss the ZZ Top of old, tho ... wish they'd ditch the visual flash and bring back the audio flash)
