Our purse for the night..........................$25.00.  Wink But you know what, it was the best d*mn $25.00 dollars we could want. After paying our lead singer back $5.00 ( she was mistakenly charged to enter and wouldn't speak up for herself.....), the $20 bill will be placed on our practice space wall.  Smiley

Playing was a blast, at Midnight and as you may surmise there weren't too many people there. Providence was also subjected to a bit of a monsoon downpour off and on all night. The audience was mostly the other two bands and their supporters. Our first time at the club, but the other bands did not draw more 8 to 10 people on their own either.

Nothing quite like that "first time" with your band members.  Grin Haven't felt that in a while. It was nice to hear our sound through a "normal" house PA , as opposed to what we have gotten on their open mic nights  Lips Sealed

Thanks for all the "entertainment" tips from my previous post. Should have known that the excitement and energy of the night and the band would bring it all out on its own.

$25.00?  Are you bragging?

Seriously though, if I was in it for the money I would have quit a long time ago.

Congrats on a good night!

Dang, that's about $500 more than I make on a gig!

Get that $20 framed, even if it costs $30 to do it. Congrats on a successful event.

Many of the clubs in LA and surrounding area are set up on a pay-to-play basis.  It will cost your band $3-500 for the priveledge to play at their club and then you'll get reimbursed based on the audience you bring by pre-selling and at-the-door sales.  This started with major clubs like the famous Whiskey-A-Go-Go, but has spread to the suburban clubs as well.  Note that this may not apply to a hot local act that will draw a big house, just the the guys trying to "break into the scene".  So the fact that you guys actually walked away with a portrait of Andrew Jackson suitable for framing and didn't have to pay some lame club owner is great.  Good luck on the next one!!!

No joke!!! My band has played for 1500 dollars one night, and turned around to play for 50 the next. We wonder how that works sometimes, but its definitely not about the Mula!!

The conundrum in this goofy business is; the stupidest, lamest tunes always get the biggest money.  There are times when I really want to just up and sell all my drums- anymore I just try and do it to make that one person a little happier.  I've quit doing it for myself.

No way would I do that....The club owners shaft the bands because musicians let them! If musicians would join together and boycott those places they wouldn't have a choice but to pay the bands or close shop.... They make money from the bands and their friends. You spend thousands on gear, countless hours getting your act together, and pay to play? Something wrong with that picture. There are better ways to be heard and showcase your talent. I'd rather play for free at a Childrens Hospital than put money in those bar owners pockets. I can't rationalize the thinking behind that.     Roll Eyes

Good job on the 1st gig.....At least you made money.     Wink

In theory, yes.

But there are SO many bands wanting to play in THE clubs in L.A., in hopes of being eyed by a "somebody", there will likely be bands willing to "pay to play".

I know.  I was once one of them.

I do have 2 words of advice for those bands:

Schedule C.

i remember the first time we got paid, i almost soiled my undies. we got $100, and i was blown away by the fact that we had covered our rental and food expenses.

then i got a call from the bartender the next day asking if i'd paid the other band their cut of the dough.

man, did i feel stupid! feigned utter ignorance, saying i thought they'd been paid separately. then i had to run to my bank and up the cash. can you say loser?

note to self: always confirm payment schedule before the gig.

You always have the funniest posts!
Glad to see you're back!!

A guy who makes a music magazine for elementary schools once bought the rights to a song I made. I was floored by that one. Promptly called the buddy of mine who shared in the duet, and split it with him. He lived on it for the rest of the month!
 Wink

Never been paid more than $20 at a band/bar gig,, though played for a Doctor's convention in Vail for $300!
Dang! Of course not drums though.. work:payment ratio not good for drummers at all..  Roll Eyes
