are the acro and the supra close in sound at all? I think I might have found a pretty good deal on a supra, and I've been shopping for an acro. I'm looking for a more heavy sound as opposed to a brighter sound.

I say get it.
If it's a Ludalloy supra, you won't need to find an Acro - it's basically the same as a gray Acro, with a different number of lugs. If it's a chrome-over-brass Supra, get it because it's rare.
No need to have a ludalloy supra and an Acro, IMHO.

My understanding: a couple of signs indicating it's COB:
• COB shells tend to be heavier than Ludalloy shells
• COB shells hold their chrome plating better than Ludalloy - if it's a 1960s drum and the chrome is in good shape, it's more likely to be COB (but not guaranteed - it might just be a ludalloy supra that has been treated with kid gloves)
• Take off a lug and look inside the drill hole - file just enough to take off a little bit of the chrome plating on the edge if need be. You often can see whether it's a brass or gray color, which in turn will tell you what kind of shell it is.

do they all have the "galvanized" stamp thing on them? this seems like I would be more of an alloy indicator.
The problem is, it's a private seller in my area. It's a B/O badge, and I don't know that I'll have a chance to take it apart. I'll say that they are asking just over $100. at that price maybe I should just buy it and figure it out later.

Blue-olive badge? I'm 99-and-44/100% sure that all B/O era supras were Ludalloy (but I'll gladly defer to anyone with more definitive knowledge of '70s Ludwigs.)
Just a note: I'm not saying that a Ludalloy Supra should be avoided - not at all. However, if you get this drum, I think you can safely put your Acro-lust on the back burner for the time being, given how similar the two are.
BTW - at $100, that's a low enough price that if you eventually decide it's not what you want, you shouldn't have too much trouble recouping most if not all of your investment.

I actually find that my early 80's Ludalloy Supra 400 cuts way more than the Blacro I have (and am about to sell on E-Bay)...Maybe it's the heads or tuning, but I just like the Supra sound better.
