It's really time for me to get rid of my sh!tty steel snare and replace it.  I'm looking at a few different snares all bronze though and I can't distinguish or decide between each one.  I am looking at the Ludwig bronze, Mapex phosphor, and dw bronze.  Now I have a few questions, one is which one of these is the best (high quality, good build, durability, tunability), Which one weighs the most, and where can I find a 13" X 5" or 5.5".  It seems like these companies do not offer these sizes anymore.  What would you recommend?  Thanks for all input.

I love my Mapex Phosphor Bronze.....14x6 with 42 stand snare wires. It has become my choice of metal snare.  I can play it soft or loud and works great for a variety of music. I really like a maple snare sound, but for a metal drum it's very good. I'm not a bit sorry for buying it.  Wink  By the way, not to change the subject but 71 is my motocross number....I couldn't help but like your name.   Grin

My Mapex 5.5 x 14 Phosphor Bronze makes me a happy man. I, too, have put 42-strand snares on, after the suggestion was made around these parts. Couldn't be more pleased.

Out of those three Ive only played the Mapex, and those Mapex Phosphor bronzes are stunning drums and inexpensive to boot.    And I do believe they make a 13x5.

i've heard a DW bronze 13x5.5 at my local GC in Union Square, and thought it sounded good.  the lower tunings were a little muddy actually, against my 13x5 DW aluminum, but your ears may hear differently.

but like 563 suggested, the Mapex bronze snares have good tone, and cost much less.

I have a 14x3.5 Mapex Phosphorous Bronze that has a great sound.  Ditto on the inexpensiveness.

The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them, we will become bound by their limitation.  Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.

Check out the Pacific Hammered Brass/Phosphor Bronze.
They also make an all brass shell as well, I got mine for $150 at GC. I think the bronze one was even cheaper and they are both great sounding drums, I love mone.

Just for anybody considering, I happen to own one of THESE and I love it.

If they do make a 13x5, I can't find it on their website.  It looks as if a 14x5½ is the nearest size in the phosphor bronze.  That said, it's an awesome drum for the money.  At least my 14x3½ is.

563, you must be correct about this.  I found the review below, and it was only posted in December of last year.  My own Phosphor Bronze is a 3½x14.  I was beginning to think that only the 3½x13 existed, but here a 5½x13 is reviewed.   Also, I found reference to one on a British drum store's site.
