So I had to learn "Swing Town" by Steve Miller recently.  A pretty neat beat.  No problem to learn.

BUT THAT DANG BEAT GOES ON FOR 4 MINUTES!!

Virtually uninterupted.  That simple beat can be a bear when you have to keep it going for so long!

Any othere tunes give people similar fits??

That's a great tune. There are one or two really cool fills in that one as well. The one that sticks out in my mind is right after the vocal "And we've got to get down to Swingtown ."

There's a Bob Seger song called Hollywood Nights that tests just about any drummer's stamina. Very unwavering too. It's a good workout of a tune.

"Sweet Home Chicago" can wear me out if we extend the solo section for a while.  It's a great tune, though - always gets the crowd going.

My band plays a KC and the Sunshine Band medley, if you will.  All three songs have the same dotted 16th note pattern on the bass drum:

dum...dat..dodum...dat

It's ok for the first few minutes but after about 2 or 3 minutes, my right foot starts to burn and I have to put the dotted 16th on the snare instead of the bass drum.  Otherwise, I'll end up playing the pattern in triple instead of duple time.

I hope that made sense.

My personal bear is "@$%# It" from blink 182.  Those one handed 16ths are smoking.  I cheat and play it with two or break it up on the ride.  Still, it's humbling.

That song is quick.

Playing that tune live will give you Popeye forearms for sure.

I read somewhere that Steve Miller's drummer was warming up in the studio be playing that beat.  It caught the attention of Miller who developed the tune based on the lick.

Two for me are both from the Foo Fighters

Everlong- major forearm burn with all the 16ths

My Hero- constant eighth notes on the kick for the whole dang song, smokes my right thigh

Solos and fancy fills are not the hallmark of great drumming. Being able to maintain a steady groove is throughout an extended jam piece is.

Try playing along with Ravel's " Bolero" sometime.
There is no room for even one little error in that piece..

Swingtown is great. I learnt it by playing the first rested snare beat until i could get the foot and rhythm going , then rested the snare beat but kept playing it in my head. ...works for me.

I remember in my first band we did "A Forest" by The Cure. A simple beat, but used to kill me until i got match fit. Grin

The thing about that Swing Town beat is that it doesn't really groove unless you accent the downbeat of 1, 2, and 3 on the hi-hat.  Actually, it grooves even better if you ghost the "e-&-a's" after 1 and 2.

Just my flea-bitten opinion.   Smiley

I might be mistaken, but aren't there 2 drummers playing "Hollywood Nights"?

I think so... seems to me I remember in the liner notes of one of his greatest hits albums that he mentions 2 drummers.  Not sure who, though.  Check it out and tell me what you find.

I agree with you though, that song is like a freight train, very locomotive!

Tis true... but not two guys at the same time. One guy, two takes. No wonder it's challenging. Four arms I aint got.  Wink

from http://www.songfacts.com/detail.lasso?id=3284

Seger: "The chorus to this song came into my head one night in 1977 as I was driving through the Hollywood Hills. Our drummer, David Teegarden, played an entire set of drums as we recorded and overdubbed another entire set of drums playing a different pattern. In other words, there's two sets of everything: snare, kick-drum, hi-hat, etc. Billy Payne (of Little Feat) sat in with us for the first time and played the last two instruments, piano and organ. When he was done, he asked for a tape to listen to on the way home. he called me the next day while he had been listening, he looked down and found himself going 100 miles an hour on the freeway."

Despite years of being relentlessly beaten by "classic rock" radio stations unmercifully overplaying that tune, I still like it.  Smiley

Play along?  Try playing it live with the symphony in front of 400 people!

And what a great song that is!

Imagine the direction LZ could've gone if our beloved Bonzo had stayed alive!
