Play slow enough.

By that I mean, slow down the lick you're trying to play until you can play it consistently and correctly - even if it's ridiculously slow. Speed comes with time and repetition, but control comes from precise, targeted practicing.

If you play it fast enough that you mess it up, that's too fast. And repeating it at that tempo won't help - then you'll just be getting more practice at doing it wrong.

Slow down and be methodical and patient - there's no shortcut.

I just found out most of the recordings I'm on were actually played by Bernard Purdie.

Mike Portnoy has a fill that is sort of a signature for him. It can be heard in the song called "Pull Me Under" by Dream Theater.

2 on the snare
2 on the kicks
6 on the snare
2 on the kicks
2 on the snare
2 on the kicks
4 on the snare
2 on the kicks
4 on the hi-tom
2 on the kicks
2 on the floor-tom
2 on the kicks

Try it. They are 32nd notes in case you didn't notice. I can do it, and it is easy for the most part, depending on how fast you do it. Try it. Smiley
