The New Breed by Gary Chester The New Breed by Gary Chester The New Breed by Gary Chester Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin is also a classic. There are also several methods being taught similar to the New Breed concerning Ted Reed's Modern Syncopation. Did I mention the New Breed by Gary Chester? This is a pretty good jazz exercise that opens you up a little bit as far as Independence. If you use it in conjunction with those boods they will help each other.
Key: RH- right hand on ride
LH- left hand on snare
RF- right foot on bass
LF- left foot on hat
Its a straight Triplet exercise, so after the triplet pattern, im going to put a comma. I dont know how else to type it.
RH RF LH, RH RF LH, RH RF LH, RH RF LH
RH LH RF, RH LH RF, RH LH RF, RH LH RF
RH LH LF, RH LH LF, RH LH LF, RH LH LF
RH LF LH, RH LF LH, RH LF LH, RH LF LH
RH RF LF, RH RF LF, RH RF LF, RH RF LF
RH LF RF, RH LF RF, RH LF RF, RH LF RF
Then go through it all
RH RF LH, RH LH RF, RH LH LF, RH LF LH, RH RF LF, RH LF RF THEN REPEAT
its pretty easy, but it helped me alot when I was struggling with independence

Two jazz independence books: John Riley's "The Art of Bop Drumming" and "Beyond Bop Drumming". These are very good books that have USEABLE independence ideas. If jazz independence is one of your goals then get these two. Plus they have other valuable jazz info in them. There is a new book called "Extreme Independence" by Marco Minneman that is very interesting. And I would check out David Garibaldi's funk book "The Funky Beat". The Garabaldi book is not strictly an independence book but there are again some useable independence ideas there. blessings.

thanks for the tips.
ill check out the chester and minneman book(s) becuase they seem to have a good focus on independance. and fire, ill jot down that exercise and try it out.
ill probably skip the rileys as they seem to have a lot of stuff im not looking for. not that I have nothing more to learn, it just seems too broad for what I want.
the more the merrier, keep 'em coming.

Another good book is zoro's commandments for R&B drumming. I just got it the other day. It dosent have Independance exercises in it, but they do have some cool grooves that require a lot of independance, and it comes with a CD which is great for people whos reading skills arent up to par.

Mark, check out Marco Minnemann's "Extreme Interdependence" book. The exercises are very intense and Marco's playing on the accompanying CD is mind blowing.
I have been going through Riley's
"Beyond Bop" and it is has some very good independence exercises but Marco's book is dedicated to four-way playing.

Horacio's book, 'Conversations In Clave' can be a real buggar for independance ...I'd highly recommend it.

I would say that Gary Chester's New Breed is BY FAR the most in-depth study in independance I've seen. Work your way through the whole thing, I dare you!
