Pulse kits

When I first started drumming, I had no money, no drum experience, and no time to learn. But after playing the clarinet for 12 years, I figured I could pick it up pretty quick. I went through a series of manual labor tasks and long story short, ended up with a 5-piece pulse kit with cymbals. For $350 (at the time, now you can probably get one for $300) it was an awsome deal.
Recently, I've been getting heavily into the tuning scene and realized my kit sounded pretty bad. I actually had some people come and pro tune it with no real boost in quality.
I was wondering if anyone else plays or haas played on this kit or any other pulse stuff and found a way to make it work (and before you say to just simply get new heads I've tried).

Those drums are actually fairly servicable with proper tuning and heads.
What head combinations have you tried?

Tried to work with the heads it came with, but they are better off being used for target practice. I tried aquarian texture coated, but didn't like the sound overall. I got it to sound half way decent with evans g2.

Good show with the g2s. Remember that the head should have the exact same pitch at all lug points. If some are sharp or flat then you will get a buzz sound. Start with your bass drum and tune to {oh-say-can-you-see}16-13-12-snare.
