Allright, I've been playing drums for about 5 years, and I am not in a band.  Can someone tell me how to get recognized and get some money out of this talent?  I mean I don't suck, and I'm not the best, but I can still play and I want to make some sort of money out of this "talent" that I have.  I'm desperate for some cash.  I'm 17, in the new york area.  If you need a drummer that can play various genres post it here, or if you can supplement any information on how to get recognized and get gigs please do so as well.  Thanks

get some money

I want to make some sort of money

I'm desperate for some cash

first id recommend checking your priorities.  be sure your playing because you love it.  5 years isnt long.  17 is pretty young.  im not saying you cant be successfull with those numbers.  im just saying that its early yet.  patience and dedication are linked and necessary.

as far as more practical help goes the solo drummer is a rare thing, and even more rare to have it work.  so you should look into the band thing.  audition for anything that sounds up your alley.  if you can find a band you like playing in, youll get gigs, and get recognized.  then if for whatever reason that band doesnt work youll have a tangable background that you can use to get other work.

also bear in mind the art of the compromise.  i could be making a living drumming.  but id be playing music i dont want to play.  so i sacrafice the living (and have a day job) so that i enjoy everything i play.  some people are more flexable than me.  they enjoy playing everything, be it jewish wedding music, 80's hair band covers, you name it.  so they can make the living.

but again.  play music because you love playing it.  success will come that way.  financial or not.

First off, take the advice of Gene Simmons from Kiss:  "Don't be afraid to be the world's biggest whore."  In other words, join a cover band.  Preferably a wedding band.  Just plug your nose and do it.

Second, learn to play piano.  Seriously.

You don't have to master the piano, but a drummer who can read the sheet music of other instruments and understand the chord changes is more employable than one who can't.

You can learn to pick out melodies and play basic chord progressions on a keyboard a lot more quickly than on any other instrument.

Long term, you'll never get any real money unless you write songs.  That's a lot easier to do on  a piano than a snare drum.

Try your local drum shop, sometimes bands post signs looking for drummers, once you get one word of mouth will keep you goinog.

You say you're in the New York area.  In the City?  If so, at your age, look into the schools that are available ie. The Drummer's Collective.  Taking course there can greatly improve your playing and get you into the NYC scene.  Plus the contacts you make there will be invaluable.  You can also expect a fair and accurate assesment of your skills (or lack thereof, if applicable).

The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them, we will become bound by their limitation.  Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.
