ok, i just traveled 2 hours to pick up a set of drums...they were advertised as pearl forums...so...i pick them up...the only identification as Pearl is a large label on the bass..put thats all it says..and it faces the drummer....the lugs on the toms match the lugs on my 1985 set of Exports...my exports have labels on each tom with a serial number..so that confused me..there are no markings on inside or outside of the toms or bass (except that label)

now for the rest of the bass...the driver side lugs look like the tom lugs..the front side have lugs that have a circle imbedded in them...the bass drum spurs slide up into the drum itself, they do not rotate at all for different angles...the wood inside is a dark wood...the wrap is ivory colored

i wish i could supply pics of them, but dont have a camera...i searched on Pearl website and ebay for a pic to compare but nothing available (that i could find anyway, any guidance on this would be appreciated)

im not too upset...the price was right ($150), plus i got a Mapex double-braced high hat stand out of it too...so that was a bonus..

if anybody can provide any info on what i may have picked up..thanks...its not critical..but im beginning to think that they may not be pearls .....

Sounds like inexpensive older Pearl and/or CB drums. Without photos that's the best I can do.

Older Pearls didn't have serial numbers, and I don't think new Forums do either. But these don't sound like Forums, which are made of a light-colored wood.

For $150, you probably did fine. Put some good heads on them and rock on!

thanks...it came with a Ludwig snare too..(10 lug, blue/olive badge, chrome)...anyway...i plan on rewrapping anyway...and upgrading the spurs too...thats why the brand doesnt bother much...was just curious...yeah..i need to step up to the current century..my SLR camera just wasnt made for times like this  Grin

i have decided whether to make it a true acoustic kit or after reading the posts on here, to convert it to a electronic kit with mesh heads...i have some cleaning on it before i make that final decision Smiley

thanks for the input Mr. A!

lugs that have a circle imbedded in them

Circle in the middle, two squared bits on either end?

like -  [ O ]  (but with the circle wider)

Thats a CB lug.    But it sounds like they replaced the stock lugs.

the wood inside is a dark wood

Sounds like Asian mahog.  Which fits the budget Pearl, CB idea.

Considering the kick says "Pearl" and the lugs and wrap match across the board with the exception of one side of the kick, I'd say yeah ... Pearl.

By the sound of the snare, you may have gotten a free kit with your snare.  That may well be a chrome over Ludalloy Supraphonic.

I've never heard of a Pearl kit w/ just a label that says "pearl" on the kick...
Even if there's no serial, don't they usually at least have the model name as well?

Nope.  My late '70s Pearl kit didn't have the model name on the labels.

It could be someone took the label from a real Pearl drum and glued or screwed it into a no name kick drum and passed it off as Pearl.  Hard to say without seeing all of the drums.

I guess my question then regarding Pearl (and I'm no historian about drums), is this:
In the 70s, they may not have put the model name, but then again, how many different models did they offer back then?

My point being that if it was advertised as a Forum, and it doesn't have a model printed on it, did Pearl even make a Forum kit back when they were in the habit of not putting the model name on the drum? In other words, could a kit like this even existed? Or is it a contradiction?

that sounds like what i have

the only thing that looked at the '78 catalog, is the drum spurs are different..the ones in the catalog still pivot for different angles...mine is a straight 1/4" rod that for adjustment slides back into the bass drum itself...no other angles are possible...just height adjustment

btw, the is one of the many reasons i love this forum Smiley  so much knowledge on here

thanks again

Yeah, pretty cool, my favorite kit is the Blue Vari Pitch set on Pg. 5.

I forgot how prominent fiberglass was in drum making back then.

Also,
I don't recognize the names of most of the endorsers.

those sound like CB.  sounds like you got a pearl with some cannibalized CB parts.

ok, a update of sorts....i just took off some of the hardware off the bass drum....when i removed the "cb" lugs there was a spot underneath that looked like it had never been exposed to light...it fit the pearl style lug...

when i removed the spurs, i almost cried. Apparently, someone took off the old hardware and DRILLED three wholes to open up for the "cb" style spurs to enter the bass drum shell. The good news is it appears to be the original wrap...and the pearl logo seems to be original as well

i have been doing more research on this....im beginning to wonder if this was an old World or Maxwin set...havent been able to find pics of either style worth anything

my other question is: on the toms, the vents face forward towards the front...this is the first set i have seen this way...i actually thought the hardware had been removed and replaced as well, but when i flipped over the hardware, the toms sit too high

now, if anyone has any pearl style bassdrum lugs, spurs or bass drum tom holders....im in the market

thanks again for all the information you guys have provided...made me feel a little more comfortable in this...i will try to get a digital camera and take pics and post them...then once i rewrap/rehardware i'll post pics of the new kit
