You can get get long pieces of bamboo{not the bar-b-que type} in the garden department of a store, green in color, and tape five of them together.  then cut at 16and a half inches. Very unique. Cross between a stick and a brush. The more you break them in the better they sound.

Hi everyone, I'm new to these forums...
Presently I don't play a "proper" drumset, just odd bits of percussion and found sounds miked and routed through a modular synth.
At present I'm using:
3 spring coils (from vehicles and bed box-springs)
5 graduated steel mixing bowls
3 medium-sized clay flowerpots (suspended and struck with soft mallets)
an assortment of ceramic and metal plates
some "squeaky" kids' toys
several bells (presumably meant for decorative purposes)
bamboo and metal windchimes

Ah, a percussionist after my own heart....   Wink

Was wondering if you'd mind sharing how you have some of these things "mounted"/assembled for playing.  For instance, how are the mixing bowls set-up (on a table?) and specifically, how are the flowerpots suspended?

Early in 2004 I created a number of compositions using found instruments.

You can listen to some of these at Prolific Groove; although the website is not completed the way I want it.

In particular, go to my portfolio, click on Original Compositions, and listen to the following:

Toy Aisle - tracked live using various toys from my son's bedroom.

Cool Kitchen - tracked live using assorted kitchen utensils, pots, pans, silverware, cups, glasses, bowls and small appliances from my own kitchen.

These compositions will (hopefully) be used for film, commercials, etc. and are published by Mediatone, Inc.

Good stuff.  My son recognized a few things from his own toy collection.  Specifically, the plastic tube that groans when you turn it end to end.  I've brought back several of those from trick-or-treating at trade shows & conferences.   Smiley

The flowerpots are suspended like bells using some of those threaded eye-bolts.  A pot is suspended upside-down vertically on the eyebolt with the eye protruding from the base of the pot; a felt washer+metal washer+nut  on the threaded side of the bolt hold the pot in place.  Sounds great with soft mallets...

The rest of the stuff is usually just placed on the table or hung from various stands; I like being able to move the small gongs and springs around.

It's not the most attractive setup, but it serves its purpose for the time being.  I'd like to experiment with something like Tony Oxley's amplified frame once I get some contact mics happening...

Me and a friend took the frame out of a small piano, ran a pickup through the strings, mounted it ......

Dodge Ram, Ford F-150, or Chevy?  No, wait....
