Okay, gang, a verrrrry basic question. On a metronome, what's a tap tempo? Literally a place to tap in a new tempo count?
Thanks!

Yes. A button or pad that you would tap in time to a tune, and it would then tell you the tempo.

I use it to figure out tempos of songs.

Basically I turn the function on and tap *with my finger* along with the tempo *usually just quarter notes*.  You will get a reading on your metronome in BPM and Voila!  You can mark it down as reference.

Very handy.  I use it quite a bit for reference.  When I have a song to start, I like to get the exact tempo.  I've found that practice has helped my career a bit- maybe you will too  Smiley

Great - thanks for the help! I thought it would automatically set the tempo... you'd tap out 4, and it would continue at that  rate.  Either way, it's a great feature.
Thanks again!

That's exactly what the "tap function" is on my old "Dr. Beat" metronome.

Well, that's a helluva great feature.  So the Yamaha and Dr. Beat use the tap to create the new one--I have my eye on a Korg MA30, mainly because of the price.  I wonder....
Many thanks!

FWIW - I assume Dr Beats still do the same thing.  I bought mine back in 1986, and the "tap function" is one way to set the tempo.  The other way is to punch buttons and simply set the tempo according to beats per minute.

Some metronomes and/or drum machines even have a tap tempo start function where you tap a pad or button 5 times.  The first four taps establish an average tempo setting then the fith starts the click or sequence.  VERY handy for live integration of sequencers.  That way you don't always have to count off songs.  Your guitarist can start and you can hook up with their tempo.

Great investment. Especially if your playing in a band.
