aaahhhh..... memories of Rainbow Gatherings...... river drumming is definitely very cool to experience first hand.

Thrak, did you mean that literally?  If so...please tell, sounds like a fascinating story.
If it was tongue in cheek....I don't get it....what is a Rainbow Gathering??
Well, either way...what is a Rainbow Gathering?  Smiley

Yes, I meant that quite literally.  Rainbow Gatherings happen all year long all over the world.  People come together to spend time in nature, completely uninhibited.  It's quite organized however.  It can be many different things to everybody.  There are clinics for many things spiritual, and musical, and gastrological, and artistic-al Wink, etc...  What I mainly got out of it was great times with great friends, playing music, eating ethnic foods, exploring beautiful surroundings, and being naked!  As the heat goes up, the clothes come off, all over.

And on one particularly hot morning, a group of us were hanging out in one of the rivers around, and we started playing "river drums".  We continued to do that whenever we needed to cool off, or just to hear the incredible sounds of it.

So that's just a little bit about Rainbow...

One that stands out in my mind is the song "Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochran. I'm not sure who the drummer was, but it was recorded at Ardent Studio's in Memphis. I just can't believe how the kick on that recording stands out! Especially listening on a pair of EV Sentry 100A's! What a fat punch! Those boys in Memphis sure know what they're doing! That is one of my all time favorite kick sounds! I'm also partial to just about any of Neil Peart's recordings. The man is meticulous as a musician and his kit always sounds clean and crisp with lots of punch.

Except on Roll The Bones.  Something was awry in the mix booth during those sessions, IMHO.   I hope they keep up the sound they got going now.

Terry Bozio with Missing Persons! There's some incredible drum sounds on those recordings. Not to mention the patterns/fills etc...
(some of my friends were calling me "Stewart Bozio" in the early 80's. Big trends of that moment on me)

I don't know about you guys but I confess, I still get the chills when I hear the drum sound on "In the air tonight" with Phill Collins. You gotta admit, that s$%# sounds big!
What's the name of the Drummer from "Chic"? I forgot now..Geeezzz..
some huge gated reverbs stuff as well. I wouldn't use it now (probably) but it was pretty impressive at that time.

If I'm not mistaken, Tony Thompson was the drummer on "Like a Virgin" which remains to this day the only Madonna song I ever listen too, and it's because of the drums!  Wink  His drum sound when he played with "Power Station" was also totally outrageous.

Yes!!!
Tony Thompson!!!
I apologize to forget his name because hes a heck of a Mother F*%#@ Drummer. I used to have Powerstation album a long time ago too. I'll buy again... BTW..., by the way Tony plays and the way his drums sounds, (even with all the fx) I can bet big bucks that his idol responds (used to) by the name of "John Bonham".
Happy New "Ear"!!!!

In utero - Nirvana
Yield - Pearl Jam
Queens of the stone age - Songs for the deaf
Led Zeppelin - All I guess, especially Stairway to heaven.

And Nirvana's show in Roma 94. It's wondeful.
