Richard Bailey on Jeff Beck's 1975 album Blow by Blow, especially tracks 4. AIR Blower 5. Scatterbrain 6. Cause We've Ended As Lovers ...great technique and sound, especially on the snare & hat! Also, HEAVY sounds like Tommy Lee on the old Crue albums, Lars Ulrich on Metallica's "Master of Puppets" Old Alex Van Halen ("Hot for Teacher" !!) early ZZ Top "Cheap Sunglasses", "LaGrange" The whole wide percussive sound spectrum of Santana ... Led Zeppelin 1...

RHCP's Chad Smith on Bloodsugarsexmagik. The whole drum sound is great but what a killer snare sound!!! Also, I always like Nicko McBrain's sound on the Live After Death album.
definitely

Another drummer that has a great sound in my opinion is G.L. Moore from triumph. I cant think of anybody else that has his sound.
cool--talk about a band with "positive" messages...

It took me a while to post here because I had to think about the tons of music I listen to. In no particular order:
Any Tool - Ditto to what others have said.
Galactic - Live at the Minneapolis Jazz Festival - killer kick
Bill Ward on Black Sabbath's Reunion - HUGE AND HEAVY DRUM SOUND!!!!
Jack Johnson - Flake - I don't know who plays on it, but the snare drum is reverbed out the a$$ and it sounds perfect for the song
Phil Collins - In the Air (I know, kind of cheesy, but the toms sound big).
Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy - Just a great overall sound spectrum. Huge and fat to soft and subtle.

The techniques, though they play an important role in the early stage, should not be too restrictive, complex or mechanical. If we cling to them, we will become bound by their limitation. Any technique, however worthy and desirable, becomes a disease when the mind is obsessed with it.

I mentioned him about a month ago in a different thread- I just got turned on to that record and was blown away by his drumming also.

Richard Bailey on Jeff Beck's 1975 album Blow by Blow, Have to add "You know what I mean" from that same album. Richard Bailey is really good but the sound of his drums on that album sound too isolated. Otherwise, fantastic stuff, a blast to play along with.

5. Scatterbrain Yeah, Scatterbrain's "Here comes trouble" has some incredible and colorful drumming along with an pretty good sound. I'd also like to add the on my favorite drum sound: - Live's "Throwing copper" and "The distance from here" - Madonna's "Like a virgin" - Nena's 80s hit "99 Red Balloon" - Pearl Jam's "Ten" - Rush's "Power windows" - Tea Party's "Edge of twilight"

Well, I didn't say I played along perfectly Every now and then when I've been practicing a lot of "groove" material, I have to go and get a Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Steve Morse, or Billy Cobham CD and play to it, just to push the envelope. Lots of odd time signatures and lots of interesting fills. Some of the stuff from Mahavishnu is challenging simply because of the speed and varying times they will perform a certain section ("Noonward Race" off of "Inner Mounting Flame" comes to mind).

Nobody has given credit to Metallica's drum sound on the black album. That is the biggest drumset i've ever heard on a Metal record.
I also think Dream Theater's sound (Awake and later albums) and Pantera's sound are truly great. Very processed, yes, but powerful nonetheless.
Bonzo had a terrific powerful sound, old school powerful.
Nicko McBrain sounds amazing on Maiden's Rock In Rio live record. Truly great live sound.

Ok, I'm late to the game on this one but these come to mind right off the top of my head. (In no particular order)
Toy Matinee-Brian McLeod on drums.(later with Cheryl Crow) Nice wide open toms. Crisp hi hats, Great overall sound
Believe It- Tony Williams' Lifetime, great snare sound and tom attack (it could have just been Tony though!)
Heads Up-Dave Weckl
The Crossing-Big Country, Mark Brzezicki
Mindfields-Toto, Simon Phillips Love the way his toms sound.
Most Bonham but I recently heard "Achilles Last Stand" for the the 1st time in a while and was quite impressed with the overall sounds, especially the cymbals.

Wow - that is one of my favorite albums of all time! Brian's a great drummer - his playing on the Ballad of Jenny Ledge on that record has always killed me. Great drum sounds, too - good call!

Toy Matinee is one of my favorites too. I love the way he plays on that. Jenny Ledge is great. So is his playing on Things She Said and Last Plane Out. (I love the hi hat grooves he's laying in there) Good stuff all around. The production was great also. Too bad it didn't meet with more success. I think Kevin Gilbert was quite a talented guy.
