I just learned an interesting little bit of trivia on everyone's favorite Orchestral Percussion instrument, the good ole timpani.  The word Timpani actually is the plural (meaning more than one).  Does anyone know the what the correct word is for just one?  I'll give you a couple of days.  If nobody gets it then I'll give it up (if I remember by then...LOL!!).  Good luck!!   Grin

Timpano is the correct answer.

Timpanum is from the Latin meaning drum.

What do I win?  Wink

dissonance:

I beg to differ. Back in June, I did some incidental music for a theater piece. One part of that was playing a walking bass line on one timpano (the tune was "Angel Eyes"; it was a duet with a tuba playing the melody). After each performance, I had people from the audience coming up to me to see if I was really doing that on a timp and to tell me how much they liked the sound.

There's a lot you can do with one timp, as long as it has a pedal.

I have to agree with accusonic here.

I've played countless pieces that only requires one timpano ... even though I may have two to five timpani in my set-up.

Classical, Theatre, etc., can use just one drum. It all depends on the composition and situation.

I do agree, however, that if you are going to play timpani, you need to at least have two. If not, you've limited yourself on what you can play. And not just any two sized timpani, but rather a 26 inch and 29 inch ... or comparable.

Absolutely. Perhaps I should mention that although I played the bass line on one timp, I had two in my setup (29"/26") for that show and two is generally the minimum I would use on a gig.

Aw. c'mon, Bart, we all know that everyone's favorite orchestral percussion instrument is the chimes!

Almost as much fun to play as it is to move!  (Altho, if you get the right part, they actually can be a blast to play - H. Owen Reed's La Fiesta Mexicana, anyone?)  Wink

alright, alright....so I didn't think it all through.  I just had a memory from when I was packing up all the percussion gear from were the orchestra practice into a truck.  At the end there was just one, single *timpano* sitting in the middle of this huge room all by its lonesome.

This reminds me, I came across this piece written for one timpano that was written out in graphic notation I'll try to scan it in for you guys...its quite a sight.

however the composer has dictated they be read.  there is no standard in graphic scoring, its the non-standard Smiley  if you end up with a graphic score and no explanation youd kinda have to interpret it for yourself ... thats where it gets really fun Smiley  dig up some john cage books at the library, he was notorious for it.

Each composition is unique and different, so most of your time is spent just deciphering what everything means ... let alone practicing the piece, getting it to performance level.

If you think some of this stuff looks like hieroglyphics, you'd be right!
