Is there such thing as a defective stick? Well I bought a pair of vic firth 5A's about a week ago and one of the sticks broke in like 2 days. I admit I hit hard but then I kept using the other stick and it has'nt broken yet. As of now Im using Vater 5B plastic tip , they stand up to the rimshots a bit better than Vic Virth sticks to me. From what I hear about Regal Tip, I think I should try them out. I have been trying to find sticks thats are'nt too expensive that don't break in 2 days for a while.

Normally I use the Regal Tip "rock". I've been trying the Pro-mark 747's. Both with Wood tips.
Just a follow up. I'm really liking those Pro-Mark oak 747s. They have a really solid feel and power. A bit heavier and just slightly longer than the Regal Tip Rocks though. I tried pair of those Pro-Mark maple SD9's just for fun. Super light and thick. Yet I found I started cramping up playing with them. I thought it would be the opposite ... but I think I stated playing harder than normal to compensate for the lack of punch that I'm used to getting out of the Rocks.

I've been through all sorts of ranges of sticks. Spent a few years on Neil P sigs 747 oaks which is the longest I had any single size stick.
Have recently settled on Vic Firth MS2's. I really like the large diameter for keeping a loose grip and the weight gives me all the speed and power I need. I tried a bunch of the signature marching sticks but found most of them to be less durable that the plain old MS2's.

Regal Tip 5b nylon tip & Rock nylon tip. I was told by a few different people that the laquer they use is pattented. I know it gives me a better grip. With other sticks I have to use Zildjain Stick Wax (aka H3 ) to give them grip.

I love Vic Firth F1's and Vater Fusions Nylon Tip. My favorite weight is right between 5a and 5b.

I always lightly sand the lacquer in the grip area. Just enough to take off some of the the slickness.

Love Vic Firth SD4's .. Maple feels great and gives way more than Hickory. Yeah so maybe they dont last nearly as long but they definately help my playing.. I have heard that Vater make a line of Sticks out of "Sugar Maple" so far though I have not come across any.. If anyone has any other suggestions or know of a similar profile stick in Maple let me know and I will check them out.. Gerry

I currently use a pair of vic firth 5a. I like those sticks a lot, but I will try some even lighter sticks soon. I can't stand 5b, or any sticks that are heavier than that. I got so much more controll with light sticks, and I play a lot faster too. The lighter the better, imo

I use a bunch of different sticks for different gigs but the stick I use the most is the Regal Bob Gatzen model but in MAPLE!! They're a little bigger around than the hickory ones, and they're lighter too, also they pitch pair WAY better than the hickory, out of a dozen pair you might find 3 or 4 dead sticks. I also like that they're 17+ inches long too, it allows for a good reach without too much wasted movement.

Mostly 5A's and 5B's. Usually VF but sometimes Zildjian. VF has a "55" model which is between a 5A and 5B that I want to try. I've been experimenting with some signature lines. - I like VF's Steve Smith model. Very solid and a nice cymbal sound.
- I have Zildjian's Dennis Chambers model because I wanted to try one with a small head on it. It's OK, but it feels "not solid" compared to VF's...
- I want to try VF's Stanton Moore model. Partly to support things he endorses, but I think I will like the size and weight by what I've read on the VF website.
Does anyone have any recommendations on small beaded heads?

SD2 Bolero and Peter Erskine's Ride Stick. They really bring out the 'click' in a cymbal, and they're nice for sensitive notes, as well (wasn't the Bolero designed with Ravel's famous piece [no pun intended] in mind?).

Regal Tip Nylon Tip 2B / Dense Wood for me. I have pretty big hands and the extra mass of the stick helps, plus the coating that Regal Tip puts on the stick is great - it responds to the heat from your hands and makes the stick easy to grip. Balance is great, too.
In my musical application, I'm driving a nine-piece band, and I'm playing pretty hard, so the dense wood tends to last quite a bit longer. If you are a RT user, specify the dense wood on your next stick order, you'll like 'em.
Regards, drumz1

By the way Chip, I love the Regal 7A's, great tiny sticks, I refer to them as "My pencil sticks."
I've got small hands and they fit me well..... "Pencil sticks" lets me get the "lead out"....
