Hey everyone, last year I went to a dermantologist for my hands because in the winter they get really torn up, they just get really dry. Does this happen to anyone else? It's below zero up here on the Mass/New York border. But dang, this weather isn't so good for my hands.

My hands can get really dry, and sometimes chap so much that they crack and bleed. Just try using some hand lotion on a daily basis. Works for me.
Does anyone find it really hard to play drums with cold hands? It really makes you understand why they call it "warming up."

I have a bigger problem in the summer when it's really humid. We play outdoor festivals and it get's so hot and wet that it's like I've soaked my hands in dish water (the skin gets so soft). Needless to say I tear them up pretty good then. I'll usually go to gloves if I feel blisters starting (although I don't really like them) Fortunately I've never had a problem with them when it's dry. my lips are another story though.

Mine get really dry & cracked, too in the winter. Doc suggested Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream. Comes in a tube. Works well for me.

That's what I use to, he recommended putting it on right after I wash my hands. Works great.

try increasing you intake of essential fatty acids, like a Udo's Blend supplement which all health food store's carry as Dr Udo is the fat doctor kingping... EFA will go a long way in helping your entire system, but is really effective for skin conditions... Bag Balm (no i'm not joking) for cracked cows udders is the best product, not the wallmart brand, but the real mccoy from a feed store

Interesting.. thanks for the suggestion, but for now I'm going to have to stick to cortozone cream, unless I want to go ask the farmer down the street for some. And that may seem a little akward.

I heard the Paraffin Wax treatments at beauty salons work wonders.

This stuff has been around for years and it works great. One can will last eons, unless you have a herd of cows. Roger

Its cold here where I live, and I also get dry, cracked hands during the winter months (November to April). I use Vaseline Intensive Care lotion, which has always worked wonders for me.

I knew a percussionist whose hands were extremely torn up <bleeding/cracked/he was cryin'>, and he said the paraffin wax treatments at the salon worked wonders, enough for him to continue with the tour.

It's odd, but I find just the back of my hands get dry, but really dry. I guess all those calloses from my early drumming days have insulated my palms and fingers

I heard this mentioned somewhere else on this forum, but here's a whole webpage about what could happen if you really screw up your hands: http://djembelfaq.drums.org/v13f.htm
